Prof. Yuxin Pan (ceypan@[Link])
‒ The main purpose of this subject is to provide university
students with the basic knowledge of mechanics of
materials:
1. Acquire a basic understanding of stress, strain and
their relations based on linear elastic theory
2. Acquire basic skills for stress and deformation
calculations for axially loaded members and torsional
bars
3. Acquire basic skills for calculating normal and shear
stresses on beam
4. Acquire a basic understanding of using Mohr’s circle
to find principal stresses and angles
5. Develop the ability to produce shear and bending
moment diagrams
6. Acquire basic skills for determining beam deflection

2
‒ Upon successful completion of this course, students should
be able to:
I. understand the properties of engineering materials
and important principles used in the analysis of stress,
strain and deformation
II. make use of physical models to perform stress
calculations and determine deflection in structural
members
III. apply the principles learned in this course for the
analysis of simple structural members
