Derivation of Basic Identities Using the Pythagoras Theorem

By using Pythagoras theorem, it is known that a2 + b2 = c2 . Divide the two sides of the equation by a2 , b2 and c2 , we get:

÷a2 ÷b2 ÷c2

Question
Without using a calculator, find the value of each of the following:

(a) sin2 (−430∘ ) + cos2 (−430∘ )

π π
(b) tan2 ( ) − sec2 ( )
3 3

Solution
(a)

sin2 A + cos2 A = 1
sin2 (−430∘ ) + cos2 (−430∘ ) = 1.

(b)

1 + tan2 A = sec2 A

π π

tan ( ) − sec2 ( ) = −1.
