Comparative Analysis of R.C. Building Methods

This study compares the analysis results of a two-storey R.C. building using three methods: ACI moment coefficient method, moment distribution method, and ETABS software. It evaluates the maximum shear forces and bending moments, finding that while results are generally close, the moment distribution method aligns more closely with ETABS than the ACI method. The analysis indicates that the first floor experiences the highest shear and moment due to live and superimposed dead loads.

ABSTRACT

Many approximate analysis methods were developed on the basis of structural

behavior to analyze the structures. It is important to choose more exact method for the
best approximations to be able to determine more accurate size and weight of the
members. Nowadays, the most efficient and comprehensive software for the analysis
and design of buildings are developed. The classical methods provide means of
checking computer results rather than simply relying on the generated output.
This study presents the various analysis results of two-storey R.C building by
three different analysis methods. In this study, the structure is analyzed by using ACI
moment coefficient method, moment distribution method and ETABS software in
order to know the analysis results obtained manually from which method is closer to
the ETABS results.
In this study, the proposed building is a rectangular shaped building and
gravity load only is considered. Dead loads, superimposed dead loads, live loads and
rain loads are considered based on ASCE 7-05. All structural members are designed
according to ACI 318-08. Tributary method is used for the calculations of loading. In
order to know the different analysis results of the proposed building, three grid lines
are selected as the critical grid lines. In this analysis, the structural frame members’
sizes are set in the same in order to compare the analysis results among the three
analysis methods. And then, analysis results of the selected grid lines such as
maximum shear forces and bending moment of beams are compared.
It is found that the analysis results obtained from three different methods are
closed. However, there is slightly variation in the values of shear and moment. The
maximum shear and moment are occurred in the first floor level since the first floor is
subjected to live loads and superimposed dead loads. Based on the calculated analysis
results, it is found that ACI coefficient method gives the maximum values of moment
and shear in interior grid lines rather than other two methods. For grid line B, the
values of moment and shear obtained from ETABS software give the maximum. For
the three selected grid lines, the analysis results of moment distribution method are
closer to the ETABS results than that of ACI coefficient method.
