1. Two aqueous sulphuric acid solutions, one with a concentration of 26.0 wt% H₂SO₄ (SG =
1.143) and the other with 67.0 wt% H₂SO₄ (SG = 1.379), are combined to produce a 4.50
molar solution (SG = 1.217).
a. Calculate the mass fraction of sulphuric acid in the product solution [4 Marks]
b. Taking 100 kg of the 26.0 wt % feed solution as a basis, draw and label a flowchart of
this process, labelling both masses and volumes, and do the degree-of-freedom
analysis. Calculate the feed ratio (litres 26% solution/litres 67% solution).
[18 Marks]
c. What feed rate of the 67% solution (L/h) would be required to produce 1470 kg/h of
the product? [3 Marks]
2. A wastewater stream (fresh feed) from a metal finishing plant contains 5.15 wt% zinc (Zn)
and the balance is water. This stream is directed to a treatment unit that removes 95% of
the zinc in the feed stream (to the treatment unit), and then zinc is then recycled to another
plant (no water). The remaining liquid, after treatment, is discharged into a waste lagoon.
The treatment unit can handle a maximum of 4500 kg of wastewater per hour. If the flow of
wastewater from the plant (fresh feed) exceeds this capacity, the surplus bypasses the
treatment unit and mixes with the treated effluent before being sent to the waste lagoon.
a) Without assuming a basis of calculation, draw and label a flowchart of the process.
[8 marks]
b) Wastewater leaves the finishing plant at a rate 6000 kg/h (fresh feed). Calculate the flow
rate of liquid to the waste lagoon, and the mass fraction of Zr in this liquid.
[15 marks]
c) Calculate the flowrate of liquid to the waste lagoon and the mass fraction of Zn in this
liquid, xzn(waste lagoon) for the fresh feed varying from 1000 kg/h to 10,000 kg/h in 1000
kg/h increments. Generate a plot of xzn(waste lagoon) versus the flow rate of the fresh
feed (Use a spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel) and clearly show the formulae).
[12 marks]
