Missing Plot Techniques
1. Analyze the following block design after estimating the missing value and draw your
conclusion.
Treatments Blocks
I II III IV
T1 19.0 --- 22.5 22.5
T2 26.0 28.0 27.0 33.0
T3 20.5 28.5 21.5 25.5
2. A chemist wishes to test the effect of four chemical agents on the strength of a particular type
of cloth. Because there might be variability from one bolt to another, the chemist decides to use
a randomized block design, with the bolts of cloth considered as blocks. She selects five bolts
and applies all four chemicals in random order to each bolt. The resulting tensile strengths
follow. Find the missing observation and analyze the data from this experiment (use α = 0.05).
Also, draw appropriate conclusions.

2 73 67 75 72 70
3 75 68 --- 73 68
4 73 71 75 75 69
3. In the following data, one value is missing. Identify the design and estimate the missing
observation. Also, analyse the data and draw your conclusions.

4. To study the petrol consumption by different makes of cars, 5 drivers were chosen and each
driver was used on one of 5 days. On that day, he drove 5 cars each of different make and
each car with a different speed. The arrangement of the drivers, speeds and makes was as
in the following table:
Speeds in miles per hour
25 35 50 60 70
Drivers D1 B(19.5) E(21.7) A(18.1) D(14.8) C(13.7)
