THE TAROT OF FENG SHUI
The idea is from Eileen Connolly and her son Peter. Uniting the philosophy of Feng Shui in a deck of
Tarot cards. Feng Shui is based on the philosophy of the flow of energy or “chi” that can be directed by
placing large and small elements in such a way that yin and yang can be balanced. It seeks to provide a
more harmonious environment for people.
Feng means wind and Shui means water. The union of wind and water is a traditional concept of Chinese
culture where man is a participant in the environment in which he lives and receives positive or negative
influences from that environment.
The Feng Shui Tarot draws attention because you change some things. Instead of the traditional "card
suits" of cups, clubs, swords and coins, we have Feng Shui animals in the so-called minor arcana.
- The white Tiger that represents swords and the West. A strong and powerful creature that needs to be

As soon as I saw the Golden Dragon Tarot deck, published by AGMuller, I realized.
Artistically, they evoke each other. It's not just that both decks have an Asian feel, but the art style and
use of color are very similar, although the Golden Dragon deck has more delicate drawings.
Both covers even have a similar emotional feel to them, not to mention the black borders.

The Feng Shui Tarot is a major departure from the Waite-Smith derived deck. The Minor Arcana, in
particular, do not seem to follow any traditional tarot deck.
My favorite card is The Moon: it combines an almost photographic realism within the structure of more
traditional artwork. This is the only card in which this combination occurs, and I wonder if it is a
statement about the illusory nature of the Moon.

The Fool is a beautiful young lady standing on a winding, but not remotely precarious, road. Its essence
is one of peace and stillness: it even has one foot balanced on the water, just like the traditional
Temperance card. Talk about your mixed metaphors!
Black Turtle One, the equivalent of Ace of Wands, shows a large turtle climbing from icy waters to the
snowy bank above.
The White Tiger Eight (Eight of Swords) shows a tiger crouching beneath a porch-like structure, but it
does not appear trapped in any way.
This brings me to the unusual construction of the deck. Most of the Elders are unchanged, although the
Death card has been renamed "Transition" (in Connolly's deck, it is euphemistically called
"Transformation"). The Devil becomes "materialism" (as it is also called in the Connolly deck). But
minors are where the rubber no longer meets the road.
The costumes are based on the Four Celestial Animals. The wands have been changed to the Black
Tortoise costume; Cups, the Red Phoenix; Swords, the White Tiger and the Pentacles are the Green
Dragon costume. While green is an earthy enough color, Dragons and Pentacles are not one in my mind.
White tigers and swords work in tandem for me, especially with the icy blue eyes Connolly gives those
nervous tigers. But the Black Tortoise, often surrounded by snowy mountains, seems like a "Polar"
opposite to the Fierce Wands, and the Red Phoenix imagery for Cups is as opposite a choice as I have
found.
The deck's small white booklet (LWB) says that the Feng Shui Tarot is "not intended to give the reader a
'Feng Shui' reading, but rather a Tarot reading with the meanings of the cards illuminated with visual
examples of Feng Shui...
It's a nice deck though.
Each card is bordered with a black border, and on the right side there is another border, beige this time,
inserted with the card number and title, with a trigram at the bottom. The artist's initials are enclosed in
carnelian-colored ink reminiscent of a seal.
