BIOL 1141 Lab 12 |1
Summer 2023: BIOL 1141 Lab 12: Anatomy of the Reproductive
System & Physiology of Reproduction:
LAB WORK: Successful completion of the following activities will reward you with the
day’s participation points.
To Do: Work with your lab partners to complete the following exercises in your lab
manual:
1. Exercise 42: Anatomy of the Reproductive System
a. Read and understand the exercise, anything from the exercise could be
on Lab Exam 3
b. Complete Activity 1, 2, 5, 6, 7
2. Exercise 43: Physiology of Reproduction: Gametogenesis and the Female Cycle
a) Read and understand the exercise, anything from the exercise could be
on Lab Exam 3
b) Complete Activity 1
2. Dissection Exercise 9: Dissection of the Reproductive System of the Cat
a) Complete Activity 1, 2, Dissection Review
Learning Objectives Exercise 42: Anatomy of the reproductive system:
1. Discuss the general function of the reproductive system.
2. Identify the structures of the male and female reproductive systems on a model,
cadaver, or image (see structure list). List the general function of each.
3. Define semen, state its composition.
4. Trace the pathway followed by a sperm from its site of formation to the external
environment.
5. Define erection and ejaculation.
6. Define gonad.
7. Name the gametes and endocrine products of the testes and ovaries. Indicate
the cell types or structures responsible for the production of each.
8. Explain the role of the fimbriae and the ciliated epithelium of the uterine tubes in
the movement of the egg from the ovary to the uterus.
9. Define endometrium, myometrium, and ovulation.
10. Describe the anatomy and discuss the reproductive function of the female
mammary glands (see structure list).
Learning Objectives Exercise 43: Physiology of reproduction: Gametogenesis
and the female cycles:
BIOL 1141 Lab 12 |2
1. Define meiosis, gametogenesis, oogenesis, spermatogenesis, synapsis, haploid,
zygote, and diploid.
2. Cite similarities and differences between mitosis and meiosis.
3. Describe the stages of spermatogenesis.
4. Define spermiogenesis and relate the anatomy of sperm to their function.
5. Describe the effects of FSH and LH on testicular function.
6. Discuss the microscopic structure of the ovary. Identify primary, secondary,
vesicular follicles, and the corpus luteum. List the hormones produced by the
follicles and the corpus luteum.
7. Relate the stages of oogenesis to follicle development in the ovary.
8. Compare and contrast spermatogenesis and oogenesis.
9. Discuss the effects of FSH and LH on the ovary. Describe the feedback
relationship between the anterior pituitary gonadotropins and ovarian hormones.
10. List the phases of the menstrual cycle and discuss the hormonal control of each.
