As a registered nurse observing Linda’s environment, varied environmental cues can reflect
the overall state of well-being and the social needs of the resident considering that she was widowed
8 years ago after 52 years of marriage. Due to the state of isolation, it is observable that the resident
significantly struggles with meeting daily tasks and ensuring home organization, which may be
caused by physical or emotional incapabilities. While the resident is noted to communicate on phone
daily with her 60-year old daughter, I would note the significant signs of social connection and
interaction which would reflect a sense of inclusivity and minimal instances of absolute isolation.
From a broader perspective, the visible environmental cues within Linda’s home would provide
critical and insightful information on her cognitive state as well as her environmental support needs.
While observing the resident’s environmental, multiple environmental cues evidently reflect the
patient needs and applicable nursing interventions to improve the health outcomes of the resident.
The physical layout and organization of the resident’s room reflect the physical needs of the patients
which would be achieved through the outcomes of effective communication and delegation of duty
among registered nurses. Nurse’s intervention should be centred on the patient’s information and
observed cues which ensures that all registered nurses access provide relevant medical and nursing
care based on personal and health information about the admitted patients, which endorses better
outcomes of nursing care.
Observing environmental cues within Linda’s situation positive impacts my capacity to
prioritize long-term care needs and adopt effective communication techniques with the healthcare
team to ensure that patients mental, health and social needs are addressed based on evidence. After
identifying potent issues such as isolation, poor self-care settings, or difficulty with medication
management due to old age, I seek to ensure that long-term care plans are implemented to ensure
that nursing care is provided beyond physical care. Further, I would choose to apply detailed and
comprehensive language to explain her unique needs to the interdisciplinary medical and nursing
team to ensure that all practitioners offer holistic care for the patient. The main communication
techniques I would choose would be attentive listening to the patient, affective care and detailed
articulation of observed cues to other attending nurses. In essence, these environmental cues
significantly impact my choices where I would emphasize on efficient communication within the
team of registered nurses to ensure that proximal patient outcomes are achieved. My choices
advocate for the provision of comprehensive and holistic care to patients, which would necessitate
the consideration of favourable environmental settings and team culture that supports the satiation
of patient’s needs.
The simulation directly relates to clinical experiences where I was required to demonstrate
leadership and critical thinking capacity through effective communication practices with members of
the interdisciplinary team within the hospital settings. My experience with a long-care patient
without social support evoked my reflection on the integral role of evidence-informed practices on
the provision of holistic care for patients within long care homes. I’ve encountered different elderly
patients with limited family contact which accounted for the lack of motivation and support to
complete daily tasks, which ultimately affected the general health outcomes of the residents. The
simulation plays an important role in emphasizing the need to look beyond the resident’s physical
health but also consider the psychosocial and emotional aspects of the patient’s life, which are
critical aspects of developing and implementing an effective long-term care plan. The similarity
between the resident’s situation and my experience revolves around the psychosocial problems
associated with distress and lack of social support, which significantly exacerbate the underlying
medical problems. However, there are significant difference with the resident especially due to the
numerous surgical operations conducted on the resident Linda Cooks. From a broader perspective,
the scope and nature of long-term care greatly depends on the health dynamics of the resident,
which would influence my choice of nursing care practices, physiological interventions and social
support framework for ensuring Linda’s health outcomes are improved.
The simulation has offered resourceful information and insights that will greatly impact my
nursing practice especially among the elderly requiring both social support and medical care within
their isolated homes. I will adopt the aspect of evidence-based practice from the simulation which
has clearly demonstrated the need for registered nurses to acquire, evaluate and distribute relevant
medical and personal information regarding patients, to ensure the provision of nursing care based
on evidence and factual data.
To effectively apply the new knowledge to my clinical practice, I seek to emphasize to other team
members on the importance of accurate and timely communication regarding patients. The new
knowledge can be efficiently applied to clinical practice through advocating for holistic and
sustainable patient assessment where the environmental and psychosocial cues can reveal
underlying health needs. Through prioritizing evidence-informed practice based on efficiently
distributed information within the healthcare team, nursing interventions would be more resourceful
and helpful to long-term care residents
