CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

A school is an educational institution to provide learning spaces and

learning environments for the teaching of students under the direction of

teachers. Ubay National Science High School is a prominent school located in

Fatima, Ubay, Bohol. Students who wish to study at this school will face two

processes: the entrance exam and the interview. Studying in this kind of school

requires an intelligent mind, a diligent attitude, perseverance, and patience. It is

believed that activities and lessons at Ubay National Science High School is

more advanced given the school's prominence and its status as a Science High

School. Expected that Students must complete all their essential tasks and

homework assignments.

Procrastination is a common behavior exhibited by many individuals,

especially students. As students transition from elementary school to junior high,

the academic demands increase, and the pressure to achieve academically

rises. Consequently, students may experience academic anxiety, which may

contribute to a tendency to procrastinate. While putting off work or assignments

until the last minute appears to be a harmless habit, the long-term effects may

have adverse consequences on academic performance. This research will

1
explore the effects of procrastination on academic performance among junior

high school students.

Procrastination is the act of delaying or postponing a task or action, often

to the point of not completing it. “Procrastination is the thief of time” is a saying

that denotes that procrastinating—postponing things unnecessarily—causes

people to waste a lot of their time. Procrastination is a tendency to delay all of

your work, leaving you with little time to do it once you recognize that it must be

done. And occasionally, the outcome might be subpar. Academic performance is

a critical measure of a student's success.

Consequently, every student's goal is to achieve the best academic

performance possible. However, procrastination has been found to negatively

impact academic performance.

On the third quarter of school year 2022-2023, the Junior High school

students of Ubay National Science High School faced with various activities and

projects that are necessary to pass a particular subjects. The researchers

noticed that most of the students were relaxed during the quarter. But the end of

the quarter, the students looked stressed by the academic performance due to

piled up activities. And with that, the researchers want to discover if the impact of

procrastination affects the students’ academic performance.

The study is essential as it aims to provide insights into the reasons why

junior high school students procrastinate and how it affects their academic

2
performance. Moreover, the results of this research will inform strategies and

interventions for parents, educators, and students to reduce the impact of

procrastination on academic performance. By exploring the impact of

procrastination on academic performance, we hope to help junior high school

students achieve their academic potential and, as a result, improve their

prospects for future success.

Review of Related Literature

Due to its negative consequences on both the general public and the

student population in the social sciences, Murat Balkis (2017) believes that

procrastination has emerged as one of the most investigated subjects. Academic

procrastination is the term used to describe the overall inclination to put off

completing academic duties. Due to its detrimental effect, including academic

failure and decreased wellbeing, it is a problem that many students face at

practically every stage of their education. The gender disparities in academic

procrastination, academic achievement, and academic life satisfaction were

investigated in the current study.

Wang Zhao Bo (2019) proposed this essay that combines the viewpoints

of academics from various disciplines with those of psychologists, who have

stressed procrastination. In order to account for variations in several measures of

academic performance (grades for the completion of eleven homework

assignments, an online midterm exam, and a final exam) among students in an

introductory statistics course, the analysis compares the relative contributions of

each two separate measures of academic procrastination and class attendance.

In order to explain variations in these performance measures, multiple regression

4
models are created using the aforementioned student behavior variables as well

as control variables that take into account student characteristics. Despite the

fact that the class attendance variable was frequently found to be directly

associated with student performance, neither the statistical significance nor

relative strength of this association could be determined.

Mehmet Kandemir (2014) believes that procrastination can affects the

student’s behavior, it has a negative effect on students’ schoolwork, grades, and

even their overall health. Students who procrastinate experience higher levels of

frustration, guilt, stress, and anxiety – in some cases leading to serious issues

like low self-esteem and depression and the behavior of academic

procrastination is quite common among students. Academic procrastination

occurs when students postpone completion of activities, projects, and

assignments unnecessarily. Such procrastination may create unnecessary stress

and anxiety for people when they attempt to complete their assignments with

rush until the last deadline. Students cannot show their real performances in

learning process and they fail because of procrastination behaviors. The

common issues that lead to student procrastination include abstract goals,

feeling overwhelmed, perfectionism, fear of failure, task aversion, resentment, a

problematic work environment, and sensation seeking. And some reason why

student procrastinate is lack of motivation it is among the greatest causes of

procrastination. At times, the reason we choose to do something else or do

nothing at all instead of studying is because we lack interest in it. It is therefore

important to revive this interest.

5
Procrastination may be linked to more stress and worse health, according

to a preliminary study on the health implications of procrastination by Tice and

Baumeister (1997). Students who scored well on procrastination reported having

better health and less stress at the start of the academic term, but at the

conclusion of the term, they had worsened their self-rated health and were more

anxious. However, no actual research was done to determine the causes of thus

connection. Tice and Baumeister (1997) hypothesized that the procrastinators

higher higher level of stress may have contributed to their worsened state of

health at the conclusion of the term. Sergerstrom (2000) suggests that a number

of psychosocial mediators, including the effect of stress as revealed by PNI

research, may help to explain the link between personality and the immune

system. In particular, the type or amount of stress one experiences may depend

on their personality, and this stress then has an impact on their immune system.

As Segerstrom explain, this link is complicated, with personality playing a role in

both being exposed to stressors and how responds to them afterward.

Additionally, other psychosocial and behavioral elements that interact with or are

unrelated to stressful events may have an impact on immune functioning and the

ensuing changes in health status.

Theoretical Lens

6
Emotional-regulation theory proposes that individuals have conscious

control over their emotional responses, and that effective emotion regulation is

essential for self-regulated learning and academic success. In the context of the

impact of procrastination on junior high school students, this theory suggests that

students who struggle with procrastination may lack effective emotional-

regulation skills, leading to negative emotions that interfere with their ability to

complete tasks in a timely manner. Temporal motivation theory, on the other

hand, suggests that motivation is influenced by the perceived value of a task and

the delay until its completion. In the context of this study, the theory may explain

why some junior high school students are more likely to procrastinate on

assignments that they perceive to be less valuable or less urgent.

The two theories, Emotional-regulation theory can be applied to the study

by understanding how negative emotions, such as anxiety, fear, or frustration,

can lead to academic procrastination. With this theory, researchers can examine

how students' ability to regulate emotions, particularly negative ones, is related to

their tendency to procrastinate. This may involve assessing students' emotional

awareness, coping strategies, and emotional regulation skills to identify any

correlations with procrastination. Researchers can then develop interventions

that target emotional regulation skills, including mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral

therapy, or other interventions that may help students better manage negative

emotions and reduce academic procrastination.

7
Temporal motivation theory, on the other hand, can be applied to the study by

exploring how students' perceived value of a task and the delay until its

completion are related to procrastination. By addressing students' motivational

factors, such as their perceived value of a task and their ability to manage time

effectively, researchers may develop tailored interventions aimed at addressing

the root causes of procrastination. This could include providing students with

clear deadlines, breaking down large assignments into smaller, more

manageable tasks, and helping students to increase their intrinsic motivation

toward academic tasks. Overall, understanding emotional-regulation theory and

temporal motivation theory can inform interventions aimed at reducing academic

procrastination and enhancing the academic performance of junior high school

students.

Related Studies

Procrastination is the practice of unnecessarily delaying beginning or it is

a widespread issue among college students to experience unpleasant feelings

after finishing any duties, including anxiety, melancholy, humiliation, and blame.

Academic procrastination is described as "an act of postponing a task that

requires illogical propensity to put off starting or finishing a work in school"

(Senécal, Julian, & Guay, 2003, p. 135). College students appear to be more

prone to academic procrastination, which has reached pandemic proportions

(Balkis & Duru, 2009; Ferrari, Johnson, & McCown, 1995; zer, Demir, & Ferrari,

2009; Solomon & Rothblum, 1984). According to Solomon and Rothblum's

(1984) research, 46% of students said they put off academic work at least 50% of

8
the time. Procrastination is essentially a modern-day problem that occurs in

countries with advanced technology according to Milgram (1992). The ancient

Egyptians defined the word procrastinate in two ways. Procrastination is

essentially a modern-day problem that occurs in countries with advanced

technology according to Milgram (1992).

The ancient Egyptians defined the word procrastinate in two ways. The

first is the beneficial habit of avoiding unnecessary tasks and impulsive effort,

while the second is the harmful habit of failing to complete a necessary task.

Procrastination is derived from the Latin verb procrastinate, which means to

postpone until tomorrow. Pro means forward motion, and crastinus means

belonging to tomorrow (Dc Simonc 1993). In terms of military conflict, the

Romans use this term when it is best to wait for the enemy to leave and show

patience. It is deferred judgment, which was deemed necessary and prudent.

Bliss (1983) describes procrastination as laziness and indifference in his book.

Lakein (1973) and Sherman (1991) coined the term procrastination to emphasize

the self-defeating aspects of procrastination behaviors.

It has been suggested that procrastination on popular online platforms

like Facebook is detrimental to users' wellbeing, especially among students. We

conducted two studies (total N = 699) that examined the predictors of

procrastination with Facebook as well as its effects on students' academic and

general well-being, building on recent procrastination, self-control, and

communication literature. Consistent findings from the two studies show that

procrastination on Facebook is predicted by low trait self-control, frequent

9
Facebook checking, and high enjoyment of Facebook use. Results from Study 2

also highlight how using Facebook to irrationally put off finishing important tasks

raises students' levels of academic stress and contributes to Facebook's

detrimental effects on wellbeing outside of the academic sphere.

People who procrastinate tend to have high levels of anxiety as well as

poor impulse control This study by Safia Afzal, Humaira Jami (2018) was

designed to investigate the prevalence and reasons for academic procrastination

in public university students. The sample consisted of 200 university students

including 155 women and 45 men students from social and natural sciences

departments. Academic procrastination and reasons for it were measured by

Procrastination Assessment Scale for Students (Solomon & Rothblum, 1984a).

Backward linear regression analysis has shown that risk taking, task

aversiveness, and decision-making were significant predictors (reasons) for

academic procrastination while task aversiveness being strongest predictor with

medium level coefficient of regression. It was also revealed that academic

procrastination prevails at all three levels of education (MSc, MPhil and PhD).

Task aversiveness, time management, laziness, rebellion against control,

decision making, and lack of assertion were more common reasons in students

of social sciences than natural sciences as shown by significant differences

people procrastinate because it is in human nature to avoid and fear failure. So

by choosing to never finish the task, we can avoid the consequences as well.

Another reason is the lack of focus and determination. Feeling directionless and

unfocused can often cause people to lose their wills to do their jobs. Overall task

10
aversiveness, fear of failure, dependency, decision making and risk taking were

common reasons for indulging into academic procrastination.

According to Shlomo Zacks and Meirav Hen (2018) procrastination is a

common problem in academic settings. It has been studied from a variety of

theoretical perspectives, and various causes and consequences have been

proposed. Recent research supports the idea that academic procrastination can

be viewed from a situational standpoint and as a failure in learning self-

regulation. It suggests that interventions should address situational as well as

deficits in self-regulation to assist students in overcoming their procrastination

tendencies. The current review looked at the most recent literature on the causes

and consequences of academic procrastination, as well as the small number of

studies on academic interventions for academic procrastination. The findings of

this review emphasize the importance of further research into academic

interventions for academic procrastination and the development of effective

interventions.

Findings

It is clearly shown in which is the Thematic Analysis of the impact of

procrastination, the factors affecting the academic performance, and their ways

118
to overcome procrastination. This is coded accordingly to come up a category

and an accurate theme.

Based on the gathered data by the researchers, they found out that

students have largely shown tiredness, laziness, defier, and fears of peers which

is enough reason to engaged themselves to procrastination. Students also

procrastinate because they find answering their activities boring and it leads

them to overthink.

On the other hand, their classmates are also one of the main reason why

they procrastinate because they influence one another. Commonly, the students

are attached to their social media as well as their cellphone and that is why they

intend to procrastinate all their activities and they work under pressure. To sum it

all up, most of the students are aware that they procrastinate but still, they

intended to it.

To overcome procrastination, students must practice making a to-do and a

schedule so that they can easily track their activities that needs to be done.

Students should set aside their gadgets when they are doing their activities so

that they can focus on their work. Seek guidance from their teachers and parents

and self motivation are one of the solution that the researchers found out based

on the data gathered.

These are the effects of procrastination based on the reseachers data

gathered; students got a low grade due to low productivity and it leads to health

119
problems like self blame, change of mood, lack of sleep, and disappointments;

even if they strive hard on their academics, it still has no effects because they

have no learnings to answer their missed activities and assignments that leads to

incorrect answers.

Getting an advice from their parents and teachers is very much helpful for

the students who procrastinate specially to junior high school students who are

prone to procrastination. Parents should not pressure their child in terms of their

academic performance. Parents and teachers should always check or constantly

reminds their child/students of their school works so they can overcome the

procrastination that they engaged in. It really eliminates procrastination when

parents guide their children and keeps motivating them to work hard on their

studies. Teachers should make the subjects more likeable so that students are

much interested on the lesson that they give or they should lessen the activities

that they give to their students and give the students enough time to work their

activities.

Time management helps students to reduce long-term stress by giving

them direction when students have too much to do. It puts control of where they

are going and helps them to increase their productivity.

Summary

This chapter presents the thematic analysis and findings of the study

about the impact of procrastination to the academic performance of the junior

120
high students. The researchers came up with the findings and thematic analyisis

based on the gathered data from the respondents.

CHAPTER 3

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

121
Introduction

This chapter presents the summary of findings, the conclusion and the

researchers recommendation on the impact of procrastination on the academic

performance of the Junior High Students.

Relating Findings with Pertinent Literature and Theories

Based on the findings, procrastination has a negative impact to the academic

performance of the students, it lowers their grade and it also have a negative

impact to their health and wellbeing. In affirmation to this, Murat Balkis (2017)

believes that procrastination has emerged as one of the most investigated

subjects. Academic procrastination is the term used to describe the overall

inclination to put off completing academic duties. Due to its negative impact,

including academic failure and decreased wellbeing, it is a problem that many

students face at practically every stage of their education. Correspondingly,

Mehmet Kandemir (2014) believes that procrastination can affects the student’s

behavior, it has a negative impact on students’ schoolwork, grades, and even

their overall health. Students who procrastinate experience higher levels of

frustration, guilt, stress, and anxiety – in some cases leading to serious issues

like low self-esteem and depression and the behavior of academic

procrastination is quite common among students.

To sum up with, the findings that the researchers’ came up is in assertion of

the related literature and theories of this study. Therefore, procrastination has a

122
negative impact to the academic performance of the junior high students of

UNSHS.

Conclusion

123
The main objective of this study is to apprehend the impact of

procrastination to the academic performance of junior high students.

Based on the presented results, it can be concluded that most of the

students procrastinate frequently. Thus, students are having hard time to finish

their homework and essential task due to procrastination and it results to poor

academic performance. Students procrastinate because of different factor

namely; tiredness, classmates, social media, gadgets, pressure, laziness,

overthinking, boring, defier, and fear of peers. And because of these, students

didn’t have the diligence to do their homework and essential task. Some of the

students found a way to overcome procrastination, and some still need to be

guided and motivated by their teachers and parents.

Furthermore, all the respondents have seen the negative impact of

procrastination. According to them, it makes their academic performance lower

because of delaying and postponing of their bactivities. It also has a negative

impact to their health and wellbeing, and that is because of their piled up

activities that they tend to rush that resulted to lack of sleep, tiredness and low

productivity.

To sum up with, the researchers formulated seven (7) categories using

thematic an alysis and these categories are Frequency of Procrastination,

Cognizant, Reasons of Procrastination, Impact, Overcoming Procrastination,

Ways of Encouragement, and Ways of Coping.

124
The result of this study will give insight to the parents and the school
