Working on this project made me realize the immense effort required to carefully plan
interventions that address people’s needs during a crisis. Creating this nursing care plan manual
wasn’t just an academic task; it was an opportunity to contribute to a practical resource that
could guide healthcare providers in real-life emergency scenarios. One of my key realizations
was how crucial this manual could be as a lifeline during typhoons. Its clear steps and rationales
help prevent confusion, ensuring consistent care delivery when it matters most.

Collaborating with my group was equally rewarding. Each member brought unique perspectives
and insights, enriching the manual to cover all aspects of disaster management. It was inspiring
to see how our combined efforts created something comprehensive and impactful.

While working, I reflected on how even the smallest interventions, like teaching proper hygiene,
could prevent illness and save lives. This experience reaffirmed my passion for nursing—not just
in providing individual care but in creating tools and resources that can make a lasting
difference. It reminded me that nursing extends beyond the bedside; it’s about empowering
communities and enhancing preparedness to safeguard lives during emergencies.

As a 4th-year student nurse, I can attest that this subject, disaster nursing, did really widen

our knowledge in terms of nursing care for a patient in emergency situations. This subject

teaches us how to become a responsive, alert, and practical nurse before, during, and after an

incident or disaster. Not only did it widen our knowledge, but it also enhanced our skills that we

did apply during our internship in the hospital, especially in our rotation in the Intensive Care

Unit. One of my testimonies is doing a cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a dying patient. Sadly,

the patient didn’t make it, but still I’m thankful because of the exposure and learnings that I’ve

gained.

Back to this topic, I’ve been curious about natural disasters since childhood, so making

this project specifically about typhoons, which I was curious and interested about, is an amazing

experience for me. Even though my schedule is hectic, I think I still manage to cope with my

time and ensure that everything’s going well with my clinical exposure as well as doing this

project. Maybe there’s some part of our manual project that needs to be enhanced due to the fact

that we have a hectic schedule in clinical rotation. I still think that we did an amazing job, and I

think and hope that Sir Johnryl will give us higher grades than I think we deserved. Working

with my team members was also the best because we help each other like we have each other's

backs.

Disaster management is a profound and multifaceted domain in which nursing

professionals are pivotal at every phase—mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. As I

reflect on this framework, it becomes evident how essential nurses are, not only as caregivers but

as educators and advocates within their communities.

During the mitigation phase, I recognize the importance of community health assessments.

Nurses are often the first line of contact in understanding the vulnerabilities of populations, such

as the elderly and disabled, who may be disproportionately affected by disasters like typhoons.

This role resonates with me personally, as I’ve witnessed firsthand how targeted education can

empower communities to take proactive steps in disaster preparedness.

The preparedness phase emphasizes training and planning, areas where nurses can lead by

example. Conducting drills and training sessions not only equips healthcare providers but also

builds a culture of safety within the community. I’ve participated in such drills and found them

invaluable in fostering teamwork and enhancing confidence in emergency situations.

In the response phase, the urgency of providing immediate care and mental health support cannot

be understated. I am moved by the resilience of both victims and healthcare workers during such

challenging times, highlighting the emotional toll of disasters and the vital role of psychological

first aid.

Finally, in recovery, I see nurses as key players in restoring health and well-being. Their

ongoing support can help communities rebuild not just physically, but also emotionally and

mentally. This holistic approach to disaster management exemplifies the nursing profession's

commitment to compassionate care and community resilience, reinforcing my dedication to this

vital field.

In creating this manual, I learned that time management and setting priorities and goals are

crucial to completing tasks on time. This manual was assigned to us on December 16, 2024,

during a particularly busy period. At that time, we were occupied with our Basic Life Support

(BLS) training, and the semestral break was just around the corner. During the semestral break,

we had plenty of time to work on this manual. However, instead of focusing on the task, I spent

time catching up with my high school friends and bonding with my family and relatives. After

the semestral break, we resumed our clinical duties, which were divided between local

assignments and General Santos City. Unfortunately, our group was unable to meet in person to

plan the project. We relied solely on communication through Messenger, which I now realize

was not the most effective approach. I believe that if we had met in person to discuss and

organize our ideas, we could have developed a better plan and created a more comprehensive

manual. Despite these challenges, we managed to complete the manual through teamwork, which

I consider an essential aspect of this project. Reflecting on this experience, I understand the

importance of effective time management and collaboration. These are skills I will strive to

improve upon in the future to ensure more successful outcomes.

Nursing care plans are vital in disaster management by providing structured and clear steps that healthcare workers can follow to deliver consistent and effective care during emergencies like typhoons. These plans serve as a practical resource to minimize confusion, ensuring that care interventions meet people's needs efficiently and prevent illness through small interventions such as teaching proper hygiene .

Student nurses face challenges such as managing busy schedules that include clinical rotations and academic tasks like BLS training, which impact their ability to focus entirely on project development. Additionally, communicating solely through Messenger can limit collaboration effectiveness. However, these projects provide significant learning opportunities in teamwork, time management, and prioritization, highlighting the importance of collaboration and the potential need for improved organizational strategies .

The psychological support that nurses provide during the response phase of disasters is critical because it addresses the emotional and mental distress experienced by victims, which is as vital as physical care. This support helps reduce trauma-related impacts, facilitates quicker mental recovery, and aids in building resilience among affected individuals, thereby enhancing overall recovery efforts and promoting mental health stability in the aftermath of a disaster .

Small interventions like teaching proper hygiene play a significant role in preventing outbreaks of illness, which is crucial during and after disasters when healthcare systems can be overwhelmed. These measures contribute to maintaining community health and stability, reducing the disease burden, and safeguarding public health, ultimately supporting broader disaster management efforts by decreasing the need for care interventions during crisis times .

Collaboration within a team enhances the development of a comprehensive nursing care plan manual by combining diverse perspectives and expertise, which enriches the content and scope of the manual. This collective approach ensures that all critical aspects of disaster management are covered, enabling the production of an adaptable and inclusive resource that can effectively guide healthcare providers in various emergency scenarios .

Participating in drills and training sessions enhances a nurse's effectiveness by fostering teamwork, building confidence, and equipping healthcare providers with practical skills necessary for managing real-life emergencies. These sessions cultivate a culture of safety and preparedness, ensuring that healthcare professionals are alert and responsive, which is crucial in mitigating the chaos and urgency inherent in disaster scenarios .

Potential improvements include more effective use of face-to-face meetings, which could facilitate better idea exchange and coordination. Additionally, integrating digital collaborative tools and project management software could streamline the organization of tasks, ensuring a more comprehensive development of the manual. Enhancing time management skills and prioritization during less busy periods could also improve outcomes by allocating sufficient focus and resources to critically assess and innovate within the manual's content .
