raise test scores for the ultimate goal of increasing their salary. Baines has found, however, that without
veing engaged in their homework, students’ achievement levels on tests and assessments will not necessarily
rise.
Harris Cooper defines homework as tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are meant to be
carried out during non- instructional time. It is a concept that has been around for years and today as an
expected requirement for schools. In order for a school to be rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted teachers must, under
the descriptors for the quality of teaching, learning and assessment as stated in the School Inspection Handbook
(2015) set challenging homework, in line with the school’s policy as appropriate for the age and stage of
children that consolidates learning, deepens understanding and prepares pupils very well for work to come
(Spencer, 2017).
Students who are successful at A Level and at GCSE are those who have highly developed independent
learning skills, have the capacity to lead the learning process through their questions and ideas (Sherrington
2012a).The purpose of homework and found that it had a positive impact on both retention of knowledge and
hand-in rates when the homework set, was assigned with the intention to developed learners knowledge and
allow them more choice in how they express their work (Jones 2013)
In addition to the correlation between completing homework and improved achievement, homework
plays a fundamental role in both home-school involvement and students relationships with their parents. A key
purpose of homework outside of enhancing instruction is to establish communication between parent and child
(Cooper, 2016).
DepEd Memorandum No. 392, signed by Education Secretary Armin Luistro last September 16, advises
teachers to limit the giving of homework/ assignments “to a reasonable quantity to give their pupils ample time
to rest and relax at home for the rest of the day.”
Children spend most of their time doing sedentary activities; having the Philippines as one of the
countries with the least active youngsters (Guthold, Cowan, Autentieth, Kann, and Riley, 2010)

This problem is evident in Libertad National High School, Libertad, Bunawan, Agusan Del Sur. That it
inspired the researchers to conduct study about the importance of homework activities.
1.2 Theoretical and Conceptual Framework
‘Law of Exercise’, which means that drill or practice helps in increasing efficiency and durability of
learning and according to Thorndike's S-R Bond Theory, the connections are strengthened with trail or practice
and the connections are weakened when trial or practice is discontinued. The ‘law of exercise’, therefore, is also
understood as the ‘law of use and disuse’ in which case connections or bonds made in the brain cortex are
weakened or loosened. Many examples of this case are found in case of human learning. Learning to drive a
motor-car, typewriting, singing or memorizing a poem or a mathematical table, and music etc. need exercise and
repetition of various movements and actions many times.

National High School on Homework Activities.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the Junior High School students when grouped according to:
a. age
b. gender; and
c. grade level?
2. What are the perceptions of Junior High School students of Libertad National High School on giving
of homework activities during weekdays?
3. Is there a significant difference on the perceptions of Junior High School students of Libertad
National High School when grouped according to:
a. age
b. gender; and
c. grade level?
1.4 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study could be used as a reference for further studies conducted in the same
field. For some reasons, this study will highly advantageous to the following:
Students. The study will be helpful to them. They will be provided with information about the
importance of homework activities and constituently improve their learning styles of learning.
Teachers. The results provide information on how the faculty members will handle the students and
to determine what strategies to be used to develop the skills of the students.
Parents. The result of the study will improve their guidance and parenting style to their children in
the school.

Future Researchers. They will give information which can be valuable to related studies to be
conducted in the future.
1.5 Scope and Limitation
This study focuses only on the perceptions of Junior High School students on giving homework
activities during weekdays.
1.6 Definition of Terms
For better understanding of the study, the following terms which used in the study are operationally
defined:
Homework Activities. It refers to the task given by the teacher to be done after class hour or to be
done at home.
Junior High School Students. In this study, it refers to the chosen respondents of the study.
Perceptions of Students. It refers to the positive and negative use of the respondents on homework activities. It
refers to the way of thinking of the students about homework activities.
