Human Computer Interaction
Lecture No.1
Introduction to HCI
Instructor: Dr. Kashif Laeeq
What is Human Computer Interaction (HCI)?
❖ HCI aims to enhance user-computer interactions by making computers more user-friendly and responsive.
❖ Involves the study of user interface design, usability, and accessibility.
❖ Evolves with technology, adapting to new devices, methods, and user needs.
A multidisciplinary field focused on designing technology and studying the
interaction between humans and computers.
What is Human Computer Interaction (HCI)?
Q. Is HCI is only Human Computer interaction or something more?
HCI, or Human-Computer Interaction, primarily refers to the study and design of how people interact
with computers and digital systems. However, it encompasses much more than just the direct
interaction between humans and computers. while HCI began with a focus on human-computer
interaction, it has evolved into a multidisciplinary field that encompasses a wide range of interactions
between humans and all forms of technology, considering both the technical and human aspects of
these interactions.
Origins and Evolution
❖ HCI roots can be traced back to the 1960s and 1970s, when the foundations for modern computing
and user interfaces were being established.
❖ HCI started with Command-Line Interfaces (CLI) for user interactions.
❖ In the 1980s, GUIs made computers accessible to more people.
❖ Evolved to focus on usability, user experience, and psychological aspects.
❖ Now includes technologies like VR, AR, and AI.
❖ Aims to create intuitive, human-centered designs.
HCI has grown from simple interfaces (CLI) to advanced interfaces (graphical
user interfaces (GUIs)), focusing on intuitive, user-friendly design.
Three Key Components of HCI
Three key components of HCI are:
❖ Human (Users)
❖ Computers
❖ Interaction.
Human (User)
❖ Definition: The people who interact with the computer system. They can be individuals, groups, or
organizations.
❖ Roles: Users can have different roles, such as end-users who directly use the system, operators who
manage the system, or stakeholders who are affected by the system’s outcomes.
❖ Characteristics: Understanding user characteristics, such as age, experience level, cultural background,
cognitive abilities, and physical abilities, is essential for designing effective interfaces.
In HCI, "Human" refers to users who interact with a system, with roles and
characteristics like age, experience, and abilities shaping the design.
Computers
❖ Definition: The devices or systems that users interact with. This includes not just traditional desktop
computers but also mobile devices, wearable's, smart appliances, and other embedded systems.
❖ Components: Computers consist of hardware (e.g., monitors, keyboards, processors) and software (e.g.,
operating systems, applications, user interfaces).
❖ Capabilities: Understanding the computer's capabilities, including processing power, input/output
mechanisms, and connectivity, helps in designing appropriate interactions.
In HCI, "Computer" includes devices like desktops, mobiles, and wearables,
made up of hardware and software, designed by understanding their
capabilities.
Interaction
❖ Definition: The communication and actions that occur between the user and the computer. It
encompasses the methods by which users give instructions to the computer and how the computer
responds.
❖ Types: Interaction can occur through various means, such as graphical user interfaces (GUIs),
command-line interfaces (CLIs), voice commands, gestures, touch, and more.
❖ Design Considerations: Effective interaction design focuses on usability, accessibility, efficiency, and
user satisfaction. It involves understanding user needs, designing intuitive interfaces, and ensuring that
interactions are seamless and error-free.
The methods through which users communicate with computers, emphasizing intuitive
design, usability, and seamless, efficient interactions across various interfaces.
