501 — General information
This topic contains a master list of all known possible J1587 fault codes for the Cascadia vehicle. In case of
engine faults (MID128), refer to diagnostic tools and engine manufacturer documents.
Fault codes appearing on the ICU or ServiceLink J1587 fault screens must be verified as being a J1587 ECU
fault, not a "routed fault." A routed fault is a fault that the central gateway (the CGW) has routed from another
protocol to the ICU or J1587 fault display.
502 — Faults on the way
The Central Gateway (CGW) routes and translates messages between the J1939, J1708, Cockpit CAN, and
Diagnostic CAN data links.
To determine if a J1587 fault is routed, perform one of the following steps:
• Use Table 1 to confirm that the ECU MID (message identifier) is for an ECU physically connected to the
J1587 link.
• Connect to ServiceLink. In ServiceLink, routed faults appear in gray text. Choose a different protocol until
the ECU faults appear in black text. Seeing a fault appear in black text on the ServiceLink J1587 fault
screen verifies that the fault is coming from a J1587 ECU, and also that J1587 is the correct protocol to
query for troubleshooting that fault or ECU.
G04.01/10 Cascadia Troubleshooting Manual, September 2009
J1587 fault codes G04.01
The CGW has the following wiring connections:
• Each data link in the vehicle: J1708, J1939, Cabin CAN and Diagnostic CAN.
• In the diagnostic CAN, the CGW has a direct connection to the diagnostic connector.
• In the cockpit CAN, the CGW is connected directly to the star network connector.
The CGW has the following main functions:
• Routes and translates messages between data links.
• Creates an interface between off-vehicle tools and in-cab CAN ECUs.
• Provides faults for any ECU missing from the cockpit CAN.
In some cases, the cabin CAN ECUs need information from the J1939 or J1708 ECUs. The information sent by
the J1939 or J1708 ECU is received by the CGW and passed to the correct ECU from the cockpit CAN. The
reverse occurs when a J1939 or J1708 ECU needs information from a CAN ECU.
Active CAN fault routing
If a CAN ECU generates an active fault, the CGW routes a maximum of one active fault for that ECU to the J1939
or J1708 links for display in the ICU (instrument control unit) message center, which has no direct connection to
the CAN. This is to warn the driver that the ECU has an active fault.
When the CAN ECU generates an active fault:
01/22/2008 f040759s
Figure 1, Central portal, diagnostic connector and vehicle data links
• The J1939 link displays a maximum of one active fault for that CAN ECU, under the J1939 source address
(SA) for that CAN ECU. The SAM in the cockpit, for example, has SA 33. Correct SPN and FMI information
is also displayed for that fault.
• The J1708 link displays a maximum of one active fault for that CAN ECU, under the MID for that CAN ECU.
The SAM in the cockpit, for example, has the MID 249. Correct SID/PID or FMI information is not displayed
for that fault. It appears under the generic SID "254", and the IMF may or may not be correct.
J1939 Active Fault Routing
If a J1939 ECU generates an active fault, the CGW routes a maximum of one active fault to the J1708 for that
ECU, to be displayed in the ICU message center. This warns the driver that the ECU has an active fault,
especially if the ICU has a connection only to the J1708 link. When a J1939 ECU generates an active fault, there
may even be an active fault on the J1708 link for that CAN ECU under the MID for that CAN ECU. The front
HVAC control unit, for example, has the MID 146. Correct SID/PID or FMI information is not displayed for that
fault. It appears under the generic SID "254", and the IMF may or may not be correct.
For more information about CGW message routing behavior, see G02.03 — Central Portal.

503 — ECU Identification on Data Links
The information in Table 1 identifies which ECU is reporting the fault, and which data link protocol to use in
ServiceLink to obtain the correct fault information for troubleshooting that ECU.
NOTE: Items in parentheses represent a message routed through the CGW of an ECU that has no
physical connection to the J1587 data link.

505 — ICU3 Roll Call Failures
On vehicles equipped with the ICU3 instrument cluster, both engine and ABS messages on the J1587 data link
are transmitted when the vehicle is started. If the ICU3 does not receive messages from one or both of them, then
it displays "no EnG", "no ABS", or both. If there is no communication between the ICU3 and the J1587 data link,
the ICU displays the message "no DATA". The engine and ABS rollover messages are accompanied by a rollover
fault that only appears on the ICU driver display screen. See Table 3 for a list of faults.
NOTE: Roll call faults "ECU 128 SID 254 FAIL 07" and "AbS 136 SID 254 FAIL 07" originate from the
ICU, and only appear on the ICU driver display screen. The faults will not appear in ServiceLink or any
other tool that reads J1587 data link faults.
If the ICU3 detects an active fault on one of the active faults on the J1587 data link, it displays a message
containing an abbreviation for the ECU that has the fault, and its MID. See Table 4 for a list of messages.
See more information in C01.01 — ICU3.
506 — J1587 Data Link ICU4 Roll Call Failures
The ICU4 is programmed to detect the engine ECM (electronic control module) on the J1587 data link. Any other
ECU that the ICU detects on the J1587 data link is "learned". The ICU attempts to detect these "learned" ECUs in
addition to the Engine ECM during roll call at each subsequent start. The ICU4M learns and detects up to four
G04.01/10 Cascadia Troubleshooting Manual, September 2009
J1587 fault codes G04.01
components on the J1939 data link, including the front HVAC control, the rear HVAC control, the MSF, and the
forward collision warning system (VORAD).
If the ICU does not detect an expected ECU when performing a roll call, it will report this on the display. These
faults are not displayed in ServiceLink. The ICU4 reports roll call failures with three display screens. The first
screen shows one of the messages in the "Message" column of Table 5. This indicates the ECU's J1587 MID,
which is not being advertised in the roll call. The next two screens report the SID and the IMF. Roll call faults have
SID 254 and FMI 07.
NOTE: The ABS and Engine ECM do not actually report the MID on the display, rather they report "no
Abs" (no ABS) or "no ENG" (no engine) to indicate the MIDs of those ECUs.
507 — J1587 Data Link ICU4M Roll Call Failures
All ICU4M roll call faults are displayed on a single screen. All J1587 roll call faults have SID 254 and FMI 07. See
more information in Table 6.
For more information on ICU4/ICU4M roll call faults, see C01.02 — ICU4/ICU4M Instrument Cluster.

501 — General information
This topic contains a master list of all known possible J1939 fault codes for the Cascadia vehicle. In case of
engine faults (SA 0), refer to diagnostic tools and engine manufacturer documents.
Fault codes appearing on the ICU or ServiceLink J1587 fault screens need to be verified as J1939 ECU faults, not
"routed faults". A routed fault is a fault that the central gateway (the CGW) has routed from another protocol to the
ICU or J1939 fault display.
502 — Faults on the way
The Central Gateway (CGW) routes and translates messages between the J1939, J1708, Cockpit CAN, and
Diagnostic CAN data links.
To determine if a J1939 fault is routed, perform one of the following steps:
• Use Table 1 to confirm that the ECU MID (message identifier) is for an ECU physically connected to the
J1939 link.
• Connect to ServiceLink. In ServiceLink, routed faults appear in gray text. Choose a different protocol until
the ECU faults appear in black text. Seeing a fault appear in black text on the ServiceLink J1939 fault
screen verifies that the fault is coming from a J1939 ECU, and also that J1939 is the correct protocol to
query for troubleshooting that fault or ECU.
Cascadia Troubleshooting Manual, September 2009 G04.02/11
G04.01 J1587 fault codes
If a CAN ECU generates an active fault, the CGW routes a maximum of one active fault for that ECU to the J1939
and J1708 links for display in the ICU (instrument control unit) message center, which has no direct connection to
the CAN. This is to warn the driver that the ECU has an active fault.
NOTE: On the Cascadia vehicle, the ICU4M simply reads the data link faults and displays 2 messages
(one J1708 or one J1939) for the same fault since the fault is transmitted on both the J1708 and J1939
data link.
This is to warn the driver that the ECU has an active fault,
especially if the ICU has a connection to the J1708 link only. When a J1939 ECU generates an active fault, there
may even be an active fault on the J1708 link for that CAN ECU under the MID for that CAN ECU. The front
G04.01/10 Cascadia Troubleshooting Manual, September 2009

HVAC control unit, for example, has the MID 146. Correct SID/PID or FMI information is not displayed for that
fault. It appears under the generic SID "254", and the IMF may or may not be correct.
For more information about CGW message routing behavior, see G02.03 — Central Portal.
503 — ECU Identification on Data Links
The information in Table 1 identifies which ECU is reporting the fault, and which data link protocol to use in
ServiceLink to obtain the correct fault information for troubleshooting that ECU.
NOTE: Items in parentheses denote messages routed from an ECU that is not physically connected,
but is reported by the CGW.

505 — J1939 Data Link ICU4M Roll Call Failures
The ICU4M instrument cluster is programmed to "learn" various ECMs (electronic control modules) from the
J1708 data link. See Table 3. The ICU4M also learns and detects 2 ECUs on the J1939 data link for roll call.
These ECUs are the MSF (SA 49) and the collision warning system (VO-RAD - SA 42). Since the MSF is required
to read faults, there is no way to display a roll call fault for SA 49.
The ICU4M expects to detect these "learned" ECUs and the Engine ECM during roll call at each subsequent start.
If the ICU does not detect an expected ECU when performing a roll call, it reports the fault on the display. These
faults are not displayed in ServiceLink. Common ICU4M J1939 faults are displayed as "SA – SPN 639 FMI 7", and
J1708 faults are displayed as "MID s254 FMI 07". As with any fault reported on the ICU4M, the entire fault is
displayed on a single screen. All J1939 data link roll call faults have SPN 639 and FMI 7, and J1708 faults have
SID 254 and FMI 07.
For more information on roll call failures, see C01.02 — ICU4/ICU4M.

of a device has failed.
501 — General information
This topic contains a master list of all known CAN (Vehicle Area Network) fault codes for the Cascadia vehicle.
The CAN fault screen in ServiceLink is the only reliable place to find information about CAN faults.
Fault codes appearing on the ICU or ServiceLink J1939/J1587 fault screens must be verified as being a J1939 or
J1708 ECU fault, not a "routed fault." A routed fault is a fault that the central gateway (the CGW) has routed from
another protocol to the ICU or to the J1939 or J1708 fault display.
502 — Faults on the way
The Central Gateway (CGW) routes and translates messages between the J1939, J1708, Cockpit CAN, and
Diagnostic CAN data links.
To determine if a J1939 or J1708 fault is routed, perform one of the following steps:
Cascadia Troubleshooting Manual, March 2010 G04.03/1
G04.03 CAN fault codes
• Use Table 1 to confirm that the ECU MID (message identifier) is for an ECU physically connected to the
J1939 or J1708 link.
• Connect to ServiceLink. In ServiceLink, routed faults appear in gray text. Choose a different protocol until
the ECU faults appear in black text. Seeing a fault appear in black text on the ServiceLink J1939 or J1708
fault screen verifies that the fault is coming from a J1939 or J1708 ECU respectively, and also that the
currently selected protocol is the correct one to query for troubleshooting purposes regarding that fault or
ECU.
The CGW has the following wiring connections:
• Each data link in the vehicle (J1708, J1939, Cabin CAN and Diagnostic CAN).

Figure 1, Central portal, diagnostic connector and vehicle data links
Active CAN fault routing
If a CAN ECU generates an active fault, the CGW routes a maximum of one active fault for that ECU to the J1939
or J1708 links for display in the ICU (instrument control unit) message center, which has no direct connection to
the CAN. This is to warn the driver that the ECU has an active fault.
When the CAN ECU generates an active fault:
G04.03/2 Cascadia Troubleshooting Manual, March 2010
CAN fault codes G04.03
