MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF FLUIDS - CHAPTER 10
ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE AND GUAGE PRESSURE
Viscosity
Viscosity
o Viscosity is the property of a fluid that resists the force tending to cause the
fluid to flow.
o It is analogous to friction in solids.
o Example:-
o Consider 2 glasses one filled with water and the other filled with
honey.
o Water will flow down the glass very rapidly whereas honey
won’[Link] is because honey is more viscous than water.
o Therefore in order to make honey flow we need to apply greater
amount of force. Because honey has the property to resist the motion.
o Viscosity comes into play when there is relative motion between the layers
of the [Link] different layers are not moving at the same pace.
Coefficient of Viscosity
o Coefficient of viscosity is the measure of degree to which a fluid resists flow
under an applied force.
o This means how much resistance does a fluid have to its motion.
o Ratio of shearing stress to the strain rate.
o It is denoted by ‘η’.
o Mathematically
o Δt=time , displacement =Δx
o Therefore,
shearing stress =F/A
Strain rate=Δx/LΔt Where L is the length.
o η=shearing stress/strain rate
(F/A)/(Δx/lΔt) = (Fl)/vA where Δx/t=v
o Therefore η=(Fl)/ vA
o I. Unit:- Poiseiulle (PI)/Pa/Nsm-2
o Dimensional Formula: [ML-1T-1]
(a) A layer of liquid sandwiched between two parallel glass plates in which
the lower plate is fixed and the upper one is moving to the right with velocity v
o Velocity distribution for viscous flow in a pipe.
