 (Mumtaz Ummar 2021), E-commerce sales have risen across the world and further
accelerated by the pandemic to currently achieve levels it was not expected to reach
until 2022. This increase has prompted companies to look for cost friendly
alternatives to tackle the ‘last mile’ delivery challenge. Last mile is the final leg of
shipment that goes from the warehouse to the recipient which also often constitutes
majority of the shipping cost. To reduce this cost, crowdsourcing solutions were
proposed such as the ones by Amazon and Walmart, where they tried to recruit
workers from the crowd to handle some delivery tasks. Existing solutions suffer from
some limitations such as: 1) Incentivizing workers to handle the tasks 2) optimize
routes environmentally and based on delivery cost and 3) worker preferences not
being considered. In this thesis, the problem of reducing the cost of last mile
delivery is considered where crowd sourcing will be utilized to achieve a win-win
strategy for both workers and task publisher.

 (Pratibha Singh, Manali Gupta, Amresh Kumar, Pallab Sikdar, Neena Sinha 2021),
The study attempts to identify the influential antecedents of customer satisfaction and
patronage intentions in the context of e-grocery retailing through mobile applications.
Literature survey based on qualitative thematic approach was adopted for the study.
The reviewed articles were selected based on Critical Appraisal Skills Programme
(CASP) framework. The model was subjected to reliability and validity determination
through Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The hypotheses were tested through
Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). SEM results revealed that out of the four
proposed antecedents i.e. online tracking, design aesthetics, online rating & review,
and perceived security risk, the initial three bear significant positive causal
relationship with customer satisfaction. The existing study gives a perspective of e-
grocery retailing based mobile applications in an emerging market, which is a
departure from the past studies which are based on developed markets characterized
by higher technology penetration and awareness amongst inhabiting populace.

systems have created many new industries last-mile delivery solutions and have
received some attention in the academic literature. In this review paper, we analyse
the current industry status of this emergent concept and provide a classification of
available platforms based on their matching mechanisms, target markets and
compensation schemes. We review the operations research (OR) literature explicitly
addressing this topic and assess the realism of the assumptions, and applicability to
real-world applications. We also compare the management decisions within
crowdsourced delivery systems to well-studied OR problems in the literature, and
pinpoint new challenges that arise in the context of crowdsourced delivery. The
purpose of this paper is to identify key elements of such systems that distinguish them
from other transportation systems, to ultimately shed light on some promising
research directions

 (Ahmad A Rabaa’I 2021), Studies on mobile grocery delivery applications (MGDAs)

are scarce and still in the nascent stage. The current study is the first empirical study
that investigates customers’ behavioural intension to adopt MGDAs. This study
extended the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology with important
factors relevant to the MGDAs context, such as perceived risk, convenience, and
delivery experience. Data was collected from 393 individuals in the State of Kuwait
and were analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. The main
empirical results confirmed that users’ behavioural intension to adopt MGDAs is
predicted by performance expectancy, effort expectancy, hedonic motivations, and
delivery experience. The moderating role of gender was also examined. The
permutation-based test results confirmed there are no statistically significant
differences between males and females in their behavioural intensions to adopt
MGDAs. Based on the study results, theoretical and practical contributions are
provided for scholars, service providers, stores owners, and apps’ developers.

relationship between the latent variables: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use,
attitude and intention to use grocery shopping apps. Partial least squares multigroup
analysis was used to examine the moderating effect of education. A total of 305
grocery shopping apps users were surveyed using a structural questionnaire. The
results indicated that all the factors considered in the framework were significant in
predicting the intention to use the grocery shopping apps. The findings show that
education has no significant impact on any relationship.

 (Mohammad Affan Akhtar, Md Rashid Farooqi, 2022) This study attempts to

recognize how consumers change their purchasing patterns from offline stores-based
shopping to online or app-based shopping, particularly for grocery products. If we
talk about 2018-19, so It was harder to think that grocery products like fruits, milk,
vegetables, bread, egg, fish, meat, etc. can also be delivered online in India, but today
most online platforms like Flipkart launched “QUICK,” Amazon Launched their
“Amazon Fresh,” and many more app-based companies launches and launching day
by day new applications and platform for delivering the grocery products at your
doorstep within 10-15 minutes, Like BigBasket, Licious, Zepto, Nature’s Basket,
DMart, JioMart, InstaMart, Dunzo, Blinkit, Faraazo, StarQuick (a TATA enterprise),
Spencer’s, and HappyFresh, etc. and many more. Of course, this is because of the
latest technology, convenience, and due to the Covid-19 pandemic also. Currently, in
metropolitan cities and some metro cities in India, app-based companies are
serviceable and provide grocery products. Observations of online and offline buyers
can be evaluated to determine how value is constructed in both channels. It is
necessary to identify factors that influence offline grocery shopping. The main
objective of this study is to analyze the factors that influence consumers to purchase
groceries from offline to online, whether this is due to technological changes and
awareness or convenience, or because of time savings, avoiding crowding, low
pricing, and more verities, and to identify the factors that motivate customers to move
online-that is, app-based shopping or go offline-that is, store-based shopping,
particularly for daily essentials which is grocery products.

 (Jaya Chitranshi, Komal Chopra 2023), AI driven quick delivery services have gained
a lot of momentum in the post-Covid scenario in the Indian market. Many players
have thronged the market in this space, Zepto being one of them. This research paper
was set forth to understand the quick delivery service model and to list employee
well-being challenges in quick delivery service-space in India. Twenty-two delivery-
boys were asked open-ended questions, in a semi- structured interview format.
Inductive content analysis was used to analyse responses.

Major challenges were found related to

(i) Intrinsic job-characteristics,

(ii) missing support system and supportive relationships,
(iii) ineffective supervision,
(iv) negative thinking and pessimism,
(v) mindfulness gap, and
(vi) the missing leadership perspective.

interest of regional and national level start-ups in India. This model of online grocery
delivery has immense potential due to convenience for customers and speed of
delivery. However, survival in this business needs infusion of funds for expansion,
controlling costs and managing the efficient deployment of funds. Revenues cannot
be earned only from delivery charges or from margins. Other sources of generating
revenues are critical. Earlier, start-ups focused only on scaling up the business
without an eye on profitability. But now earning profits from this model has
become imperative. This has spurred consolidation among the market players. This
research effort discusses these developments and attempts to identify critical success
factors that can lead to long term sustainability of this business model. The paper also
makes recommendations so that operations can be made profitable .

 (Kinga Stecuła, Radosław Wolniak, Barıs Aydın 2024), This paper presents a review
of the technologies and services associated with online grocery shopping. The
progress in the field of online grocery shopping has been very rapid in recent years.
Hence, there was a need to systematize knowledge about the latest various solutions
used in this topic. The authors searched the internet, focusing on websites of different
supermarkets, shops, and other services that offer online shopping, as well as
reviewed scientific papers. Based on the collected material, the authors created four
thematic parts, which include: (1) supermarket services; (2) dedicated grocery
delivery services and farm-to-table; (3) shopping in Virtual Reality and the
metaverse; smart devices and (4) AI in food ordering—the last part includes smart
devices, such as smart refrigerators, ovens, their functionality, and the services
connected with them. The authors refer to 243 sources.

The research includes the three following objectives:

(1) exploring and presenting the emerging applied ways of online grocery shopping,

(2) exploring and presenting the latest technological advances related to the digitalization
of grocery shopping,

(3) Discussing the upcoming technologies, services, and methods in online grocery shop-
ping.

This paper provides knowledge about a wide range of solutions offered by both
supermarkets and stores (e.g., shopping applications, VR applications, metaverse shopping)
and other companies (e.g., deliveries, product tracking), highlighting the numerous
functions available thanks to smart devices (e.g., voice control, own shopping lists, control
of products, their quantities and expiration dates, management of user preferences, and
many more). This paper also discusses social issues related to the presented solutions, such
as their influence on consumer behavior, barriers to adoption, and the associated challenges

RESEARCH GAP

From the literature reviewed, on the topic ‘customer satisfaction and awareness on e-
grocery applications’, it is clearly observed that the majority of the studies which has been
reviewed are investigated in India in different years. Only some topics are reviewed in
different countries.

The rise of e-grocery applications has transformed the way people shop for groceries
despite the growing popularity of online grocery shopping, there is a need for further research
on customer satisfaction and awareness in this context. While there is existing research on
customer satisfaction with online shopping, there is a lack of studies specifically focusing on
e-grocery applications. Additionally, the relationship between customer awareness and
satisfaction with e- grocery applications remain unexplored. This study aims to address this
research gap by providing a comprehensive understanding of customer satisfaction and
awareness in the context of e-grocery applications.

Customer Satisfaction and Awarness towards Zepto Application

3.1 INTRODUCTION

Zepto a Mumbai based company founded by Aadit Palicha and Kaivalya Vohra has made a
name for itself by delivery groceries to customers in just 10 minutes. The company is
considered one of the fastest growing players in the fast delivering groceries before the end of
the year.
In 2021, Zepto worked with more than 86 dark store owners across 13 different areas and
completed over 1 million deliveries before end of the year. Aadit Palicha and Kaivalya Vohra
founded zepto when they were just 19 years old. They dropped out of the computer science
program at Stanford University to return to India and start their own business. Zepto was
founded in September 2021 and began operations in April 2022.
Vohra and palicha dropped out of the university to pursue their passion for entrepreneurship.
They came with the idea for zepto during covid 19 pandemic when they realized there was a
void for quick delivery of groceries and other essentials, which typically took a couple of
days to arrive. While working on various projects including a ride-hailing commuting app for
children, the duo was confined to their homes in Mumbai due to covid regulations. Despite
grocery delivery being deemed essential by local authorities, they struggled to obtain their
provisions as the illness spread. Although their first venture, Kirana kart, which offered
supermarket delivery services, did not receive the same level of attention as zepto, it served
as the inspiration for the latter. Kirana kart had partnered with Kirana merchants to offer
groceries in 45 minutes or less.
Zepto, on the other hand, delivers groceries within 10 minutes, and it has attracted investors
such as global Founders capital, contrary capital, angel investors, and 2am ventures, who
contributed to $730,000 pre-seed round. Initially. Palicha and Vohra aimed to complete the
first 150,000 deliveries for RS 1.

3.3 HISTORY OF ZEPTO

Zepto, a quick-commerce platform specializing in 10-minute grocery delivery, emerged as a

disruptive force in India's e-commerce landscape. Founded in 2021 by Aadit Palicha and
Kaivalya Vohra, two Stanford University dropouts, Zepto was conceived during the COVID-
19 pandemic. The lockdowns highlighted inefficiencies in traditional grocery delivery
systems, such as long delivery times, unreliable inventory, and a lack of consistency in
quality. Recognizing an opportunity to revolutionize the sector, the founders began their
journey by initially launching KiranaKart, a platform connecting local grocery stores with
customers.

However, the limitations of KiranaKart’s model soon became evident, prompting a pivot. The
duo rebranded their venture as Zepto, inspired by the zeptosecond—a unit of time that
reflects the company’s commitment to speed. Zepto focused on building a hyper-localized,
technology-driven network that could fulfill grocery orders in under 10 minutes.

The company’s breakthrough came with its dark store model. These are small, strategically
located warehouses optimized for rapid fulfillment. Using data analytics and artificial
intelligence, Zepto identified high-demand areas and set up these micro-warehouses to ensure
proximity to customers. Advanced inventory management and real-time tracking systems
further streamlined operations, reducing inefficiencies and ensuring fresh stock.

Zepto officially launched operations in major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi,
before expanding to Chennai, Pune, and Hyderabad. The promise of superfast delivery
resonated with urban consumers, particularly millennials and Gen Z, who valued convenience
and time-saving solutions. Zepto quickly differentiated itself from competitors like Blinkit,
Swiggy Instamart, and Dunzo by delivering not just speed but also reliability and product
quality.

In December 2021, the company raised $100 million in a funding round, achieving a
valuation of $570 million. Over the next year, Zepto continued to attract significant
investments, including a $200 million funding round in May 2022 that brought its valuation
to $900 million. By August 2022, Zepto had reached unicorn status, crossing the $1 billion

KMP COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE 14

Customer Satisfaction and Awarness towards Zepto Application

valuation mark. This achievement made Aadit Palicha and Kaivalya Vohra some of the
youngest entrepreneurs in India to build a billion-dollar company.

Zepto’s success is attributed to its innovative business model, youthful leadership, and ability
to adapt to market demands. Its wide range of offerings, including groceries, fresh produce,
personal care items, and snacks, coupled with affordable pricing and flexible payment
options, positioned it as a customer-centric platform.

However, Zepto faced challenges, including competition from established players, high
operational costs, and the sustainability of its 10-minute delivery promise. Despite these
hurdles, the company continued to focus on optimizing efficiency, expanding its network,
and exploring subscription models to retain customers.

Today, Zepto is a leader in India’s quick-commerce space, revolutionizing how urban

consumers access daily essentials. Its journey from a pandemic-born idea to a billion-dollar
enterprise underscores the power of innovation and the ability to transform challenges into
opportunities. Looking ahead, Zepto aims to deepen its presence in existing markets, explore
new cities, and invest in technology to maintain its competitive edge.

3.4 IMPORTANCE OF ZEPTO

1. Redefining Convenience

Zepto’s primary contribution lies in redefining the grocery shopping experience.

Traditionally, buying groceries required either a trip to the store or waiting for lengthy
delivery times from e-commerce platforms. Zepto eliminates these hassles by delivering
groceries in under 10 minutes. This speed and reliability make it invaluable for customers
with busy schedules, last-minute needs, or limited mobility.

2. Addressing Urban Needs

Urban living often involves time constraints, high population density, and the need for instant
solutions. Zepto caters to these challenges by establishing a network of dark stores in
strategic locations. This localized approach ensures that customers in metro cities can access

productive activities. This is particularly important for working professionals and students
who value every minute of their day. The app saves customers the effort of navigating

One of Zepto’s key strengths is its commitment to product freshness. Its efficient supply
chain ensures that items like fruits, vegetables, and dairy products are delivered fresh. This
reliability has built customer trust and established the app as a preferred choice for daily
essentials.

5. Supporting Local Economies

Zepto's operational model indirectly benefits local communities. The company sources
products from local suppliers and producers, ensuring a steady demand for their goods.
Additionally, by creating jobs in warehousing, delivery, and logistics, Zepto contributes to
economic growth in urban areas.

10. Employment Generation

Zepto’s operational model, which includes dark stores and delivery personnel, creates
numerous job opportunities. This contributes to the local economy while meeting the
increasing demand for quick commerce.

11. Competitive Edge

Zepto has set a new benchmark in the quick-commerce industry, forcing competitors to
innovate and improve their services. This competition ultimately benefits consumers with
better options and services.

12. Environmentally Conscious Operations

Though a 10-minute delivery model raises sustainability concerns, Zepto’s compact delivery
zones and efficient route planning help minimize the environmental impact. With further eco-
friendly innovations, it could become a leader in sustainable quick-commerce.

3.6 DISADVANTAGES OF ZEPTO

1. High Operational Costs

The promise of 10-minute delivery requires extensive resources, including a network of
strategically located dark stores, a robust logistics system, and a large fleet of delivery
personnel. This leads to high operational costs, which may affect profitability, especially as
the company scales.

2. Strain on Delivery Personnel

To meet the 10-minute delivery promise, delivery personnel often face immense pressure to
complete orders within the set time frame. This can lead to physical and mental stress,
potential burnout, and even unsafe driving practices, raising concerns about worker welfare
and road safety.

Customer Satisfaction and Awarness towards Zepto Application

3. Limited Delivery Zones

Zepto’s model relies on hyper-local dark stores, which are mostly concentrated in
metropolitan areas. This restricts the app’s availability to urban centers, leaving suburban and
rural customers unable to access its services. Expansion to less densely populated areas could
be challenging and less profitable.

4. Environmental Concerns
Although Zepto employs compact delivery zones, the emphasis on ultra-fast deliveries may
lead to increased carbon emissions due to frequent trips made by delivery personnel. The lack
of eco-friendly delivery methods, such as electric vehicles or bicycles in many areas,
compounds the environmental impact.

5. Dependency on Technology
Zepto heavily relies on technology for inventory management, route optimization, and order
tracking. While this enhances efficiency, it also makes the platform vulnerable to technical
glitches, server downtimes, or cyberattacks, which could disrupt operations and negatively
impact customer experience.

6. Limited Product Range in Some Categories

While Zepto offers a wide range of products, the inventory in some categories, especially
niche or specialty items, may be limited compared to larger grocery stores or competitors.
This could deter customers looking for specific or less commonly available products.

7. Potential for Overconsumption

The ease and speed of ordering on Zepto may lead to impulsive purchases, encouraging
overconsumption and waste. Customers might order more than they need simply because of
the convenience and immediacy, leading to increased household waste and resource misuse.

8. Competitive Pressure
Zepto operates in a highly competitive market, facing challenges from established players
like Blinkit, Swiggy, Instamart, and BigBasket. The constant need to offer better prices, faster
deliveries, and additional perks can strain resources and reduce profit margins.

9. Lack of Physical Interaction

Unlike traditional grocery shopping, Zepto removes the tactile aspect of selecting fresh
produce or other items. Customers have to trust the app’s quality checks, which might not
always meet their expectations, leading to dissatisfaction.

10. Sustainability of the Business Model

The quick-commerce model is capital-intensive, and its long-term sustainability remains
uncertain. Companies like Zepto must consistently balance speed, quality, and cost-
effectiveness, which can be difficult as operational expenses increase.

11. Worker Rights and Benefits

Delivery personnel in the gig economy often lack access to job security, benefits, or fair
wages. Critics argue that companies like Zepto should do more to ensure ethical treatment of
their workforce, especially given the physical demands of quick deliveries.

12. Risk of Dependency on Instant Gratification

The ultra-fast delivery model could promote a culture of instant gratification among
consumers, potentially reducing patience and increasing reliance on such services, which may
not always be feasible or sustainable in the long run.

High implementation and maintenance costs could impact overall profitability, especially given the already high operational expenses associated with ultra-fast delivery promises . There is also the risk of over-reliance on technology, where service disruptions could occur if AI systems fail or are mismanaged. Ultimately, while AI integration can significantly advance operational efficiencies, it requires careful management to mitigate associated risks and costs.

In the Zepto quick-commerce model, maintaining product freshness and quality poses several challenges, such as ensuring timely restocking of perishables and executing sharp quality checks . The solution to these challenges lies in Zepto's operational strategy, which includes setting up dark stores that are frequently restocked to ensure perishable items like fruits, vegetables, and dairy products remain fresh . High frequency of inventory turnover and rigorous quality assurance processes help maintain high standards . Incorporating local suppliers ensures faster supply chain dynamics, reducing the time items sit idle before reaching consumers . Despite these measures, challenges persist in perfecting logistical efficiencies to minimize delays and maintaining constant communication between suppliers and logistic operators to ensure immediate responsiveness to any changes in demand or supply conditions.

Zepto's business model contributes to environmental sustainability by operating within compact delivery zones, minimizing the distance delivery personnel must travel, which potentially reduces carbon emissions compared to other, larger delivery models . This strategy helps lower the environmental footprint associated with logistics and quick commerce operations. Additionally, Zepto's use of technology for route optimization ensures that deliveries are not only faster but also more fuel-efficient, further contributing to its sustainability goals . Nonetheless, the rapid delivery promise poses challenges to sustainability, as it necessitates a high density of deliveries which could risk overconsumption of resources and increased waste generation through packaging. To combat these, Zepto could adopt eco-friendly practices such as electric delivery vehicles, further aligning its operations with sustainable practices over the long term .

Zepto's strategy of offering competitive pricing and regular discounts drastically enhances its market position by attracting price-sensitive consumers and strengthening its market share in the competitive quick-commerce industry . These pricing strategies make quality groceries accessible to a wider audience, differentiating Zepto from traditional retail and other e-commerce platforms . By frequently providing discounts, cashback offers, and bundle deals, Zepto not only incentivizes first-time users to try its service but also builds consumer loyalty, as customers are likely to perceive enhanced value in its offerings . However, this approach might compress profit margins, especially as operational costs climb due to the 10-minute delivery model, making it essential for Zepto to balance promotional tactics with sustainable growth strategies .

Crowdsourcing addresses last-mile delivery cost challenges by utilizing a flexible workforce drawn from the community, which can reduce fixed labor costs and provide a scalable solution to fluctuating demand . This model leverages technology to match delivery tasks with independent workers, lowering expenses associated with maintaining a large, dedicated delivery staff . However, it encounters limitations such as difficulties in incentivizing workers appropriately, ensuring delivery quality and timeliness, and considering worker preferences and environmental optimizations . Additionally, as the gig workforce is less predictable, companies may struggle with maintaining consistent service levels during peak times or in critical areas .

The study on Zepto application users in Ernakulam district has several limitations that impact its generalizability. Firstly, it focuses on a specific geographic location, making the findings non-representative of Zepto customers in other regions, as cultural, economic, and social factors affecting consumer behavior might differ elsewhere . Secondly, the study involves only a small number of participants, which could skew results and not accurately depict trends in a larger population . Lastly, the study does not account for how customer satisfaction changes over time, leaving out the potential evolution in user behavior and expectations . These limitations suggest caution when applying the findings to broader contexts or making strategic business decisions based on them.
