Chapter 4
Networks and the effects of using them
4.1 Networks
Router and Network Devices
1. Router:
o Purpose:
▪ Connects devices to the internet.
▪ Routes data packets between networks.
o Key Functions:
▪ Stores computer addresses (IP addresses) to facilitate communication.
▪ Provides firewall and security features.
2. Common Network Devices:
o Network Interface Card (NIC): Hardware allowing devices to connect to a network.
o Hub: Basic device connecting multiple devices in a network. Data is broadcast to all
devices.
o Switch: Smarter than hubs; forwards data only to the intended recipient.
o Bridge: Connects two different LANs, ensuring smooth communication.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
1. Wi-Fi:
o Wireless network technology for connecting devices to the internet.
o Covers a range of up to 100 meters (depending on the environment).
2. Bluetooth:
o Short-range wireless communication for connecting devices (e.g., keyboards, headsets).
o Range is usually up to 10 meters.
Comparison:
Feature Wi-Fi Bluetooth
Range Longer (up to 100 m) Shorter (up to 10 m)
Speed Faster Slower
Use Internet connectivity Device-to-device links
Cloud Computing
1. Definition:
o Storing, managing, and sharing data over the internet instead of local storage.
2. How It Works:
o Data is stored on remote servers managed by cloud providers (e.g., Google Drive,
Dropbox).
3. Advantages:
o Access from anywhere with an internet connection.
o Scalability for growing storage needs.
o Cost-effective as no physical hardware is required.
4. Disadvantages:
o Dependent on internet connectivity.
o Security and privacy concerns.
Network Types
1. LAN (Local Area Network):
o Covers a small area (e.g., a home or office).
o Offers high speed and low cost.
2. WLAN (Wireless LAN):
o A LAN with wireless connectivity (e.g., Wi-Fi).
3. WAN (Wide Area Network):
o Covers large geographical areas (e.g., the internet).
o Uses public and private transmission media.
4.2 Network Issues and Communication
Security Issues in Data Transfer
1. Passwords:
o Strong Passwords: Use a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
o Weak Passwords: Easy to guess (e.g., "12345").
2. Authentication Methods:
o Biometric verification (fingerprints, face recognition).
o Magnetic stripe cards and smart cards.
o Physical or electronic tokens.
3. Anti-Malware Software:
o Protects against viruses, spyware, and ransomware.
o Regularly scan storage media and downloaded files.
Electronic Conferencing
1. Types of Conferencing:
o Video Conferencing: Virtual face-to-face communication (e.g., Zoom).
o Audio Conferencing: Voice-only meetings.
o Web Conferencing: Combines video, audio, and screen sharing.
2. Requirements:
o Hardware: Microphones, cameras, speakers, and reliable internet.
o Software: Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet.
