Insights from My Internship Experience

The intern reflects on a satisfying week, noting progress in closing client cases after an initially overwhelming start, while also facing personal challenges balancing school and work. They utilize a solution-focused model and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to assist clients, particularly those with substance use disorders, and express interest in learning more about addiction-specific models. Support from supervisors has been a positive aspect during this time.

This past week has been incredibly satisfying at my internship.

The first few months, while

exciting, felt slightly overwhelming as I was constantly getting new cases and not closing any.
However, now that my thirty days with my clients are starting to come about, it has been very
gratifying to close their cases and reflect on the work we have done together. My negative is
related more to my personal life. With so much going on with other aspects of my life, it has
been particularly difficult this last week to keep up with school and my internship. Another
positive, however, is that my supervisor and director have been so supportive and
understanding throughout these issues I have been experiencing.

The primary model we use in our practice is a solution-focused model. As our module indicates,
a solution-focused model starts with a client’s indicated solution to their problem and then the
social worker assists the client in figuring out how to meet that goal with the resources
available to them. One intervention I use often with my clients is cognitive behavioral therapy
(CBT). CBT focuses on the idea that psychological problems have some basis in faulty thinking,
learned patterns of unhelpful behavior, and those with psychological issues can learn better
coping mechanisms to improve their lives and symptoms (American Psychological Association,
2017). I tend to use this with a majority of my clients. We focus on what they have done in the
past, what has worked in terms of their new goals, and on learning new behaviors that may
work better alongside their goals. Because my interactions with my clients is only for thirty
days, the combination of focusing on solutions and evaluating behaviors that are more effective
towards those solutions is a very effective use of our short amount of time together.

Many of the individuals I work with struggle with substance use disorders, so one model I would
like to learn more about is the addiction model. While I feel confident in working with these
individuals because of the coursework I have completed over the course of this MSW, I would
be interested in learning more about models specifically tailored to the issues they face.
