Tutorial 4
1. A displacement vector r has a magnitude of r = 175 m and points at an angle of
50.00 relative to the x axis.
a. Determine the x and y components.
b. Express the vector r in terms of unit vectors.
2. A bird flies 100 m to the east, then 200 m to the northwest. Use the algebraic
addition of vectors to find the bird’s net displacement.
3. A football, when kicked, leaves the ground with a velocity of 15 𝑚/𝑠 at an angle
of 600 to the horizontal. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of
the velocity.
4. Two persons pull a box. The magnitudes and directions of the forces that they
exert on the box are as follows:
𝐹1 = 80 𝑁, 1200 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑥 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠
𝐹2 = 60 𝑁, 300 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑥 − 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑠.
(i) Write the forces in terms of unit vectors.
(ii) Determine the net force acting on the particle (𝑭𝑛𝑒𝑡 = 𝑭𝟏 + 𝑭𝟐 ).
5. For the vectors A and B lying in the x-y plane and given by
𝑨 = (2.0𝑖̂ + 2.0𝑗̂) 𝑚
𝑩 = (2.0𝑖̂ − 4.0𝑗̂)𝑚
Determine
(i) Their resultant;
(ii) The magnitude of the resultant; and
(iii) The angle the resultant makes with the positive x-axis
