[Link] you like eating fish?
[Link] can you see fish?

3
TI: Act as the examiner and keep the time. Then comment on student’s performance.
Unit 2 Things
Sample Answer to PART 1

1. Why do people go fishing?

According to fishing enthusiasts, fishing is not just about the fish. It’s about catching
the fish and everything in between. It helps relieve stress. Spending a day outdoors
and sitting by the fresh breezy water will help you relax and unwind.

2. Do you like eating fish?

Yes. Fish is a good source of nutrition. Fish is low in fat and cholesterol, and high in
protein. It is good for the heart. In addition, fish is very delicious and easy to cook.

3. Where can you see fish?

There are many places where you can find fish. You can see a lot of fish whether in the
lake or the sea, or at the seafood market.
Unit 2 Things

You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have
Part 2 one minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make some
notes to help you if you wish.

Describe an expensive activity that you enjoy doing

occasionally.
You should say:
• what it is;
• who you do it with;
• why it is expensive;
• and explain how you feel about it.

4
TI: Act as the examiner and keep the time. Then ask 1-2 questions about S’s statement.

Sample Answer to PART 2

Off the top of my head, the first one I can think of is tennis. Last semester, my roommate Tom
signed up for a tennis course at a local tennis club. Due to his influence, I really had a craving for it.
So I went to that club to play tennis once or twice a month.
I’d love to play more often but it’s too expensive. The club we go to usually charges 100 yuan per
hour for the use of their court, and if you need a trainer to guide you, you have to pay an extra 150
yuan an hour. So it definitely would cost an arm and a leg for young guys like me.

But I learned a lot from a trainer there. He told me that tennis is a little tricky at the beginning, since
moves like serving a ball are very different from how you do them in badminton. Then, after five
classes with him, my skills reached the next level. He showed me the basic movements and helped
me adjust my posture. Eventually, I got the hang of it.

Now I play tennis with Tom and other buddies at the club, but it still costs me at least a hundred
yuan each time. Anyway, I think it’s a practical skill. I once read an article that says playing tennis is
even more beneficial to your health than running. It involves the activity of each and every muscle
in your body, which can do wonders for keeping fit. So even though it’s very costly, it’s worth it.
Unit 2 Things

Part 3 Discussion Topics. This part lasts for 4-5 minutes.

PART 3

1. What kinds of expensive things do people like to buy?

2. What’s the difference between women and men in buying

things?

3. Why are some sports expensive? Are they for everyone?

TI: Act as the examiner and keep the time. Then comment on student’s performance.
Unit 2 Things

Sample Answer to PART 3

1. What kinds of expensive things do people like to buy?
I guess people buy expensive things that benefit more than just themselves. Wedding rings and
houses are two examples. A wedding ring is always a gift for someone you love. And a house is
something you can share with your loved ones as well. It seems like the kinds of expensive things
people like to buy are the kinds of things they can share.

2. What’s the difference between women and men in buying things?

Well, women and men have different shopping habits. I’ve read that women are more engaged in
clothing shopping than men are. Women also feel happier when they are at a mall. Most women
I know all love shopping for clothes and shoes. But men like practical things more, like appliances,
electronics, and home hardware.

3. Why are some sports expensive? Are they for everyone?

Some sports are expensive because of the equipment. For example, tennis requires proper shoes
and outfits. Plus, a good tennis racket can easily cost you over a thousand yuan. Some other
expensive sports aren’t for average people because they’re super expensive to play. Golf and
skiing are typical examples in this category.
