Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Pre-Teaching
Review (5 mins.)

During this part, the teacher will ask

questions to review some of the lessons
that have been tackled during Grade 9.

Who among you here has already seen

a volcano in person? Students will raise their hands if there
are any.

Alright. So, when you were in Grade 9,

you tackled volcanoes. Who among you
here can still remember how volcanoes
are formed? Sample answer: Volcanoes are
awesome manifestations of the fiery
power contained deep within the Earth.
These formations are essentially vents
on the Earth’s surface where molten
rock, debris, and gases from the
planet’s interior are emitted. When thick
magma and large amounts of gas build
up under the surface, eruptions can be
explosive, expelling lava, rocks and ash
into the air. Less gas and more viscous
magma usually mean a less dramatic
eruption, often causing streams of lava
to ooze from the vent.

Very good. Aside from volcano

formation, do you still know other
geologic events that are commonly
happening here in the Philippines? Some of them were earthquakes,
tsunamis, formation of faults and
mountain ranges.

Those are correct.

Remember this since the concept of

geologic events will be very useful to our
lesson today.
Motivation (5 mins.)

This time, students will play a game, ”4

pics 1 word”. Given four (4) sets of
pictures, they will guess the common
word that describes the four pictures
together.

1. Answers:

Volcano

2. Earthquake
3. Mountain

4. Plate

After this, the teacher will ask a question

leading them to the introduction of the
lesson.

What have you noticed with the answers

given from the “4 pics 1 word”? Do they
have something in common? All the words talk about the different
phenomena caused by the activity of
the Earth’s interior and movement of
the tectonic plates.

Presentation (5 mins.)

Formation of volcanoes, earthquakes,

and mountain ranges are caused by
plate tectonics. You will learn about that
by accomplishing the following
objectives:

1. Explain Plate Tectonic Theory Students will read the lesson

2. Relate Plate Tectonic Theory with the objectives.
distribution of volcanoes, earthquake
epicenters, and mountain ranges.
3. Cite some tips on how to prepare for
an impending geologic event like
volcanic eruption, earthquakes, and
tsunamis.

Lesson Proper
Activity (15 mins.)

Group yourselves into five. Each group

will be given an activity sheet. Follow the
directions there of what you are going to
do. Answer the following guide
questions provided. I will give you 20
minutes to do your work. After this, each
group must choose a representative to
present their output in front of the class. (Students will now start their activity).

Activity 1 – Plate Tectonics

Objectives:
• Relate Plate Tectonic Theory with
the distribution of volcanoes, earthquake
epicenters, and mountain ranges.
Directions: Analyze the given illustration
below about the distribution of main
volcanoes and chain mountains of the
Philippines. Answer the following
questions afterwards.

Guide Questions:
1. Describe how volcanoes and
mountain ranges are formed in the
Philippines.

2. Why do you think volcanoes and

mountain ranges are concentrated in the
easternmost part of our country?

3. Which region in the Philippines is

most likely to be struck by earthquakes
frequently? Why?

4. How do the patterns or distribution of

the volcanoes and the chain mountains
relate to the movement of plates?

Analysis (15 mins.)

Time’s up. (This time, the teacher will tell

the students to post their work). (The students will present their
answers).

Expected answers from students:

1. Describe how volcanoes and

mountain ranges are formed in the Based on the diagram, volcanoes and
Philippines. mountain ranges are formed in a linear
pattern, most of them are in the eastern
regions of the country.

2. Why do you think volcanoes and

mountain ranges are concentrated in the Most of the volcanoes in the Philippines
easternmost part of our country? are situated and included in what we
so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire” where
plate boundaries are located.

3. Which region in the Philippines is Same with volcano formation, most

most likely to be struck by earthquakes earthquakes also happen nearby where
frequently? Why? the Ring of Fire is located.

4. How do the patterns or distribution of

the volcanoes and the chain mountains Volcanoes and mountain ranges are
relate to the movement of plates? formed when two plates collide creating
folds which will become mountain
ranges, and due to the friction caused
by the collision, the temperature inside
the Earth’s interior rises making the
magma to rise into the Earth’s crust
which will lead to the formation of
volcanoes.

Based on the activity that you have

done, what is your understanding about
Plate Tectonics? There are seven relatively large plates
and several smaller ones, including the
Philippine plate. The plates move very
slowly but constantly, and this
movement is called tectonics; thus, the
theory of moving lithospheric plates is
called plate tectonics.

That’s right. Here is an illustration that

shows where the different plated are
situated in and the corresponding
boundaries that connects them.

And this is the Philippine plate.

Examine this illustration. What does the The arrows represent the movement of
two arrows mean? plates.

Is this related to the illustration from

your activity earlier? How?
Yes, since the position of the plate
boundary is the same with the linear
pattern where volcanoes and mountain
ranges were formed.
As you can see from the first illustration,
there are arrows that meet, moving
apart, and sliding past each other.
These are the types of plate boundaries.
But we are going to discuss that
tomorrow.
Abstraction (2 mins.)

Again, what do you mean by Plate There are seven relatively large plates
Tectonics? and several smaller ones, including the
Philippine plate. The plates move very
slowly but constantly, and this
movement is called tectonics; thus, the
theory of moving lithospheric plates is
called plate tectonics.
Relate Plate Tectonic Theory with the
distribution of volcanoes, earthquake
epicenters, and mountain ranges. These geologic events are situated in
the plate boundary between Eurasian
plate and Philippine plate, thus forming
volcanoes and mountain ranges in
linear pattern. These areas are also
prone to earthquakes.

Application (3 mins.)

Is it important that we are aware of the

locations of these volcanoes, mountain
ranges, plate boundaries, or anything
related to plate tectonics? Yes, especially here in our country, we
are prone to these geologic disasters
like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions,
and tsunamis. If we know this, we can
always be aware and prepare to lessen
the impact of these phenomena.

Can you give some tips on how to

prepare for an impending geologic event
like volcanic eruption, earthquakes, and
tsunamis? (Answers may vary)

Post Teaching
