Understanding Light Reflection and Mirrors

Light travels in straight lines, and a clear reflection is seen in mirrors due to their smooth and shiny surfaces, which reflect light evenly. In contrast, water, silver paper, and steel spoons do not provide clear images because their surfaces are either curved or rough, causing light to scatter. This results in distorted reflections compared to the uniform reflection from a mirror.

Work in groups to discuss answers to these questions.

1 Does light travel in straight lines or in curved paths?

Light travel in straight lines
2. When we look in a mirror, we can see a clear reflection of ourselves.

Water can behave like a mirror and reflect animals or sky.

Silver paper is good at reflecting. It is reflected surface.

Steel spoon is good at reflecting. It is reflected surface.

Why do we see a clear image in a mirror but not in a sheet of silver paper,
water, or a steel spoon? Explain with reasons and share your ideas with
the class. (You can use a ray diagram.)
We can see a clear picture in a mirror because its surface is very smooth and shiny, which
makes light bounce off evenly and in the same direction. The curved surface of a spoon
causes light rays to reflect at different angles, distorting the image. The sliver paper
surface is rough, even if it looks shiny. Light rays hit the uneven surface and get scattered
in different directions.

Mirrors provide a clearer reflection because their surfaces are very smooth and shiny, allowing light to bounce off evenly and consistently in the same direction. This uniform reflection is key to creating a clear image. In contrast, silver paper, despite its shininess, has a rough surface that scatters light rays in multiple directions, leading to a distorted or unclear reflection. Water can act like a mirror when calm because its surface reflects light evenly, but any disturbances scatter light. A steel spoon, with its curved surface, also reflects light at varied angles, altering the reflected image's clarity .
