Worksheet: Solution Concentrations
Answer the following problems complete with solutions. Box the final answers.
1. Glucose is a sugar that is found abundantly in nature. What is the percent by
mass of a solution made by dissolving 163 g of glucose in 755 g of water? Do you
need to know the formula of glucose? Why or why not? (3 pts)
There is no need to know the
formula of glucose. Calculating the
percentage by mass only requires the
mass of the solution and the mass of the
solute. Meanwhile, the formula is used
when converting the values into moles.
2. What is the volume percent of 10.00
g of acetone (d = 0.789 g/mL) in 1.55 L of an acetone-water solution? (3 pts)
3. Describe the process
you would use in order to prepare 5.00 kg of
an aqueous solution that is 8.00% NaCl by
mass. (3 pts)
To prepare a 5 kg aqueous solution composed of 8% NaCl we first must know
how much in kilograms is that 8%. To do this, multiply 5 kg to 8% (or 0.08), which will
result in 0.4 kg of NaCl.
So to prepare a 5 kg aqueous solution, first measure out 0.4 kg of NaCl in a
container. Then proceed to add the solvent until the solution reaches the total mass of 5
kg.
4. How many milliliters of water (density = 0.998 g/mL) are required to dissolve
25.0 g of urea (CO(NH2)2) in order to produce a solution that is 1.65 m? (3 pts)
5. What is the molality of a solution prepared by dissolving 225 mg of glucose
(C6H12O6) in 5.00 mL of ethanol (density = 0.789 g/mL) (3 pts)
6. An aqueous solution contains 167 g CuSO4 in 820 mL of solution. The density of the
solution is 1.195 g/mL. Calculate the following:
a. Percent by mass (3 pts)
b. Mole fraction (solute & solvent) (4 pts)
c. Molarity (4 pts)
d. Molality (4 pts)
