Introduction:
The Philippine education system faces a
complex set of challenges, opportunities,
and improvements, especially in light of
recent developments such as the shift to
distance learning during the pandemic
and the ongoing K-12 curriculum reforms
Thesis statement: the main idea of this
article is that it is based on the problems
or issues that is encountered on what
the statistics, challenges, and
opportunities of the Philippine
Educational System that affected the
quality of education that the students
have as well as the way of teaching of
our teachers.
Body Paragraph
In the 2022-2023 school year, the
Department of Education (DepEd)
reported over 28 million students
enrolled in from kindergarten to senior
high school. This shows that access to
education remains a priority despite
pandemic -related setbacks. I also
experience the kind of education in
pandemic and I must say it did not help
me improve my thinking and Learning
skills because we are always relying on
the internet or subjects to answer our
topic. One example of this is during the
pandemic days, wherein we are in a
distance learning system and it is much
different from face to face learning
because I learn a lot from face to face
learning than distance learning because
of so many distractions and also the
laziness to answer the questions that’s
why we always rely to the internet for
answers.
Also in 2023, the education sector
received the largest share of the national
budget (P852.8 billion or roughly 16.1%),
following the mandate in the Philippine
Constitution to prioritize education.
However, only 4% of the country’s GDP is
spent on education, which is below the
UNESCO recommendation of 6%, leading
to concerns about insufficient funding
for resources, infrastructure, and teacher
training. In the Program for International
Student Assessment (PISA) 2018, the
Philippines ranked 79th out of 79
countries in reading comprehension, and
scored similarly low in mathematics and
science. This highlights gaps in the
quality of education.
In the challenges, one of the major
issues is the quality of education,
especially in public schools. There is a
significant learning gap, with students
lagging behind critical subjects like math,
science, and reading. In terms for
teachers shortages and training, the
student-teacher ratio remains high,
particularly in public schools, leading to
overcrowded classrooms that affect the
quality of teaching. One of the examples
of this is the inadequate infrastructure
including lack of classrooms, libraries,
clean water, and sanitation facilities.
When we talk about the opportunities in
educational system, the pandemic
prompted an accelerated adoption of
educational technology. Moving forward
as what I experienced, blended learning
offers an opportunity to modernize
education and improve learning
outcomes by catering to different
learning styles and making education
more accessible. The ongoing review of
the K-12 curriculum with an emphasis on
focusing on essential learning
competencies, is a chance to align
curriculum with both local needs and
global standard and increase investment
in teacher training is essential to
improving the quality of education. The
growing awareness and activism of
Filipino youth provide hope for the
future of education.
Summary
The Philippine education system is at a
pivotal point. While challenges such as
learning gaps, resource shortages, and
the need for more teacher support
persist, the opportunities for progress
through technology, curriculum reforms,
and partnerships offer a bright future.
In the future, addressing this these
issues requires sustained from the
government, students, educators and
the private sectors to ensure that every
Filipino child has access to quality
education and is equipped to thrive in
the 21st century and as for me it will help
me develop professionally and grow
personally to become a better person
and also to become a great teacher
someday to become a good role model
for the children.
