Over the past few decades, plastic containers have become more and more common,
particularly in the food and beverage industry. I think the drawbacks of using plastic far
outweigh any benefits it can bring.
On the one hand, there are some significant advantages to using plastic containers. One of
the main benefits is the durability and versatility of plastic in packaging a wide variety of
products. For instance, restaurants use plastic bags to store fresh foods like meat and fish,
while ceramic makers can use plastic packing to prevent breakage during delivery.
Furthermore, because of their relatively low production costs, plastic containers are very
cost-effective for both manufacturers and consumers. Due to the low cost of plastic
packaging, consumers are able to maintain their busy schedules while bringing any food
or drink they want.
However, the cost and convenience of single-use plastic packaging far outweighs the
long-term damage it causes to the environment and human health. Many nations
throughout the world are currently dealing with a crisis of plastic pollution, with oceans,
rivers, and landfills overflowed with non-recyclable plastic debris that will take
hundreds, thousands of years to recover. Meanwhile, millions of people worldwide
experience the negative health impacts of breathing in poisonous fumes from burning
plastic garbage, and millions of aquatic species die every year from ingesting plastic
debris floating in the world's waterways.
In short, the impact that plastic packaging has on the planet is devastating and
unnecessary. Businesses can use packaging made from recyclable or biodegradable
materials for an affordable cost. Additionally, people can begin carrying their reusable
containers as a habit.
