Project Title
Investigating the growth rate of lettuce, over a one-month time period in clay and loam soils.
Introduction
Lettuce also known as (Lactuca sativa) is a leafy crop and it is an excellent source of beta carotene
(vitamin A) which is needed for healthy skin, bones and eyes (1). This leafy crop isn't affordable for many
households, and can be bought at the market for $300 per lb, and at least 3-4 lb are cooked with rice or
is made with salad. This SBA will attempt to discover if growing lettuce at home will produce more
promising results than buying them at the market.

Method of Collecting Data
The method of data collection used was an experiment. An experimental study is a standard method of
data collection that involves the manipulation of the samples by applying some form of treatment prior to
data collection. It refers to manipulating one variable to determine its changes on another variable (2).
Experiment was the method of5 data collection used in the investigation because it allows the researcher
to conduct a real-life experimental study that allowed the user to draw accurate conclusions. The student
researcher will plant 2 dozen of lettuce seedlings on a bed at Westminster secondary school agriculture
farm. All seedlings were planted in the same mixture of sandy and clay soil and they were watered
everyday for one month, while their heights and leaf broadness were measured every week. The lettuces
after the one-month period will be weigh and compared to the lettuce bought at the market. The results
will be recorded on tables and graphs.
