Fourier Transform and Signal Analysis

The document contains tutorial problems related to signal processing, specifically focusing on Fourier transforms, Hilbert transforms, and the response of band pass systems. It includes tasks to determine the original signal from its Fourier transform, find the Hilbert transform, and analyze the response of a system to a band pass signal. Additionally, it involves expressing components of signals in terms of their complex envelopes and sketching their spectra.

ELL311: Tutorial Sheet 3

Problem 1:
The Fourier transform 𝐺(𝑓) of a signal 𝑔(𝑡) is given by
exp(−𝑓) , 𝑓>0
𝐺(𝑓) = { 0.5, 𝑓=0
0, 𝑓<0
(a) Determine the signal 𝑔(𝑡).
(b) Find the Hilbert transform of the real part of 𝑔(𝑡).

Problem 2:
Consider a band pass signal 𝑥(𝑡) with bandwidth 2𝑊 and centre frequency 𝑓𝑐 applied as an input
to a system with band pass impulse response ℎ(𝑡) with bandwidth 2𝐵 and centre frequency 𝑓𝑐 .
Show that response of this system 𝑦(𝑡) is given by

2𝑦̃(𝑡) = 𝑥̃(𝑡) ∗ ℎ̃(𝑡) = ∫ 𝑥̃(𝜏)ℎ̃(𝑡 − 𝜏)𝑑𝜏
−∞
where 𝑥̃(𝑡), ℎ̃(𝑡), and 𝑦̃(𝑡) represent the complex envelopes of 𝑥(𝑡), ℎ(𝑡), and 𝑦(𝑡), respectively.

Problem 3:
Consider the block diagram shown below where 𝑔(𝑡) is a band pass signal with bandwidth 2𝑊
and centre frequency 𝑓𝑐 .

(a) Express 𝐺𝐼 (𝑓) and 𝐺𝑄 (𝑓) in terms of 𝐺(𝑓).

(b) Determine and sketch the spectrum of the in-phase and quadrature components.
(c) If 𝑔+ (𝑡) represents the positive pre-envelope of 𝑔(𝑡), express 𝐺𝐼 (𝑓) and 𝐺𝑄 (𝑓) in terms
of 𝐺+ (𝑓).
