Sign language

What is sign language?

 A system of communication using visual gestures and signs, as used by deaf people.
 Sign languages are languages that use the visual- manual modality to convey meaning,
instead of spoken words.
 Sign languages are expressed through manual articulation in combination with non-manual
markers.
 Sign languages are full-fledged natural languages with their own grammar and lexicon.

Who invented sign Language?

 In the 1500s a Benedictine monk called Pedro Ponce de Leon used signs to help him educate
deaf Spanish students. This paved the way and the first formal sign language was developed
by Charles Michel de l'Eppe in the 1700's. Jan 6, 2018. He is still recognized as The Father of
Sign Language and Deaf Education.

3 types of sign language


 American Sign Language (ASL) -a complete, natural language that has the same
linguistic properties as spoken languages, with grammar that differs from English.
 British Sign Language (BSL)- the UK use British sign language. a rich combination
of hand gestures, facial expressions and body language and, like English, has its
own grammar, syntax and lexicons
 Australian Sign Language (Auslan)- Auslan is a sign language used by the majority of
Australian deaf community. The term auslan is a portmanteau of “ Australian Sign
language”, coined by Trevor Johnston in 1980’s.
Why is sign language important?
 Communicating in Sign Language has multiple benefits for the deaf and hard of
hearing people. Besides the fact that it allows them to communicate comfortably,
there are also some social and cognitive benefits, especially for children and their
development.
 Sign language can also provide children with hearing loss with a way to participate in
social interactions.
How can we learn sign language?
Learning sign language is not easy it takes time and patience to learn but We can learn sign
language by downloading some app that for deaf people, Take an online class and watch
some professional people in any platform that teaching sign language or surround yourself
with deaf people in order to learn more fast
