‘RATED’

SCENE 1
INT. UNKNOWN

Nikki is laying down in a bed with cables strapped to her head.

Title appears.

SCENE 2
INT. NIKKI’S APARTMENT

A black circular QR scanner lays on Nikkis table, Nikki is in the background. She walks up
to the scanner and scans the QR code on her arm, igniting the AI-assistant in her home.

AI ASSISTANT
Start off your day with today’s profile. Today’s main schedule is “job interview”. Having a high
score improves your chances of getting hired!

Nikki comes into her bathroom and the mirror is lit up by a reminder for her job interview
(the mirror shows it’s October 30th 2034, her current rate and the schedule).
The AI voice keeps talking.
Nikki picks up her phone, showing a company’s logo as background. She goes into her blood
sugar app to check her levels. She takes her insulin, does her makeup and starts pep-talking
herself in the mirror, practicing smiles and greetings.

NIKKI
(practicing)
Hi! Hi there!
(determined)
You can do this…

Nikki decides she is done and leaves the apartment.

SCENE 3
EXT. OUTSIDE NIKKI’S APARTMENT

Nikki comes outside her apartment and notices her neighbor Kristin struggling with her
groceries.

NIKKI
(happily)
Oh Kristin! Let me help you with those!
Nikki grabs one of Kristins bags and holds the door for her.

KRISTIN
(relieved)
Oh, thank you Nikki!

Nikki sets off towards the subway, eyes darting around for opportunities to boost her score.
She passes several posters with text saying “A high rating a day keeps the doctor away!”,
“Scan this QR code to partake in our special offers during halloween!”, “Jesus said: Rate
your neighbor!”, “A good rating means a good life”.

Nikki looks at her phone to see how much her rating has improved by her act of kindness.
It shows her rating has improved with 0.2 points, leaving her at a 6.7 out of 10.
Her Ai assistance informs her it is not yet high enough for the recommended score for the
interview.

SCENE 4
EXT. BUS STATION

Nikki comes up to a bus stop and sees a person waiting there. She’s blowing air on his
hands and is visibly cold. Nikki immediately removes her gloves and walks up to the woman.

NIKKI
(approachable)
I saw you were cold, do you want my gloves?

WOMAN
(grateful)
Really?

NIKKI
(Warmly)
It’s nothing. Have a great day!

Nikki walks away but eagerly checks her score when she's gotten a few meters. It has only
gone up by 0.1 points.

NIKKI
(disappointed)
Really?
SCENE 5
INT. OFFICE BUILDING

Nikki enters the waiting room for the interview. There is one other person sitting and
waiting already. Nikki walks up to the receptionist at the counter to sign in.

NIKKI
(smiling)
Hi!

RECEPTIONIST
(professionally kindly)
Hello!

Nikki signs in by scanning her QR code on a scanner on the counter.

RECEPTIONIST
Welcome Nikki, please have a seat.

NIKKI
(smiling)
Thank you so much!

Nikki sits down beneath posters on the wall. She is visibly nervous, checking her phone,
sighing and bouncing her foot.

RECEPTIONIST
Nikki Smith, Pedro Banderas is ready for you in office three now.

Nikki stands up and exits the room.

SCENE 5
INT. PEDRO’S OFFICE

Nikki enters the interview room and sees Pedro. He stands up behind his desk to scan her
QR code when she comes up to him.

PEDRO
(happily)
Nikki, take a seat please.

NIKKI
(excitedly)
Thank you.

Nikki sits down and straightens her clothes. Pedro starts looking through his laptop.

PEDRO
(looking at his laptop)
Nikki, I've looked through your resume, and it's quite impressive. You seem to have the
qualifications we are looking for. How has your score been lately?

NIKKI
(trying to lighten the mood)
It has been pretty good, or at least decent.

PEDRO
I see here your score is at 6.8. This job requires at least a score of 9.5.

NIKKI
(nervous)
Yes, I know, I'm very sorry but I promise I will do my absolute best…

PEDRO
(stern)
Hm. Here we don't accept promises, we want action.

NIkki seems nervous and disappointed. Pedro is looking through her information on his
laptop.

PEDRO
Is there anything else we should know about? Any… medical conditions or anything?

NIKKI
(strained smile)
No, mm, nothing.

PEDRO
Really?

Pedro changes position in his chair, leaning forward. He swipes on his laptop faster.

PEDRO
It says you have diabetes. Is that a big problem in your life?

NIKKI
(taken off guard)
Uhm, n-no. It is not a problem at all…
Nikki gets interrupted by her phone beeping. She quickly tries to find it to turn it off.

NIKKI
(embarrassed but tries to laugh it off)
I’m so sorry! It’s my blood sugar app, I’ll just…

Pedro looks more reserved as he watches her holding her phone.

PEDRO
(coldly)
You just said it wasn’t a big problem.

NIKKI
(tries to persuade him while struggling to maintain happiness)
I promise it is not that. I will get it under control.

PEDRO
(stern)
Nikki, you don’t have a high enough rating, and on top of that you have this problem.

NIKKI
(tries to disagree)
I, I just…

PEDRO
(coldly)
As an employee you have to have a top score. Candidates come in here with ratings of 9.6
and still can’t get the job. You do understand that right? Or are you just ignorant?

Nikki is stunned, she doesn't know what to answer.

PEDRO
Don’t make me lose more time, I think we’ve finished.

SCENE 6
INT. OFFICE BUILDING WAITING ROOM

Nikki is dazed and confused as she comes back into the waiting room. Her phone shows that
her score has dropped rapidly with a minus rating of 2.7 points after her failed interview.
She is now at a 4/10.
She sits down in the waiting room to try to calm herself, but soon she exits the building.

SCENE 7
EXT. OUTSIDE THE OFFICE BUILDING & IN TOWN
Nikki comes out of the office building. She is very stressed and in her stress she becomes
scared and disoriented, accidentally bumping into someone but she doesn't apologize due to
her disorientation and stumbles forward.
The man she bumped into seems annoyed and takes out his phone to rate her.
Her score on screen gets reduced by 1.2 points, leaving her at 2.8/10.

Nikki hurries towards the subway, trying to go home. She scans her QR code to enter
through the gates but they won’t open due to her low score.

AI voice
Your rating is too low. You cannot enter here.

Nikki tries several times to get in but it doesn’t work. People behind her in line gives her
judging looks until she runs away.

SCENE 8
EXT. LÖVHOLMEN

Nikki is disoriented and doesn't know what to do.

AI ASSISTANT
Attention. Your score is dangerously low. Try keeping a positive attitude to avoid reaching
zero.

She has once again been negatively rated, and she plummets through the rates, 1.6 > 0.8 >
0.4...

Nikki disorientedly staggers around in the older, seemingly poorer parts of the city, in what
appears to be an abandoned neighborhood. She is panting and looking lost, running into an
alleyway.
She is in enormous distress.
She comes to a dead end and looks around before she sinks down into a crouching position
with her back against the alley. She is heaving desperately.
Her ai assistant speaks again.

AI ASSISTANT
Your score has been set to zero. Please stay put.

Nikki is too shocked to say anything or to react. Everything is silent. She slowly looks up
into the camera. From behind, an arm reaches out to grab her shoulder.

The screen cuts to black.

SCENE 9
INT. UNKNOWN

Nikki is laying down in a bed with cables strapped to her head.

The camera zooms in.
She wakes up.

END.

Common questions

Powered by AI

Nikki experiences significant psychological distress following her interview with Pedro, highlighting the pressure and rejection associated with social scoring. The encounter reveals her inadequate rating and health status as barriers to employment, causing embarrassment and frustration . This public exposure and criticism undermine her confidence and contribute to a rapid rating decline, exacerbating her stress and anxiety as seen in her disoriented state after leaving the interview . The reliance on scores for identity validation creates a cycle of escalating pressure and decreasing mental stability, shown as Nikki's score plummets .

Nikki's rating decline serves as a critique of a society that equates human worth with quantifiable measures, exposing its superficial and harsh nature. Her experience illustrates how failure to comply with societal norms results in punitive measures, evidenced by her rapid score decrease following the job interview and ensuing interactions . The inability to access public services and increasing social rejection as her score plummets reveal the rigid and unforgiving societal infrastructure, where scores dictate access to not just opportunities but essential functions like transportation . This thematic element underscores how reliance on a flawed rating system erodes empathy and social support .

Nikki's interactions underscore a society valuing superficial acts of kindness and conformity to a mandated social score. Her eagerness to assist Kristin and the woman at the bus stop stems from a desire to improve her rating rather than genuine altruism, reflecting a societal norm where actions are valued based on their impact on personal ratings rather than intention . Additionally, her exchange with Pedro highlights a meritocratic yet unforgiving system where professional opportunities are contingent upon score metrics rather than competency or potential . These interactions illustrate a culture prioritizing external validation over intrinsic morality .

Social ratings significantly dictate characters' behaviors and interactions. Nikki's actions, such as helping her neighbor with groceries or offering her gloves to a cold stranger, are driven by the desire to raise her rating . The pervasive presence of the rating system is highlighted by signs reinforcing its importance and the AI assistant's reminders, influencing Nikki’s daily routine and mood . This underscores how integral ratings are to societal functionality, pressuring individuals to perform acts of kindness, not out of innate goodwill but from self-serving motives to climb the social hierarchy .

The narrative illustrates a tension between technology and personal privacy, portraying a society where actions are subject to public exposure and scrutiny through constant monitoring. Nikki's experiences, from scanning her QR code at various venues to the public display of her ratings and personal health information, indicate a significant erosion of privacy . Furthermore, Pedro's access to her full medical records without prior consent exemplifies how personal data becomes a tool for social and professional judgment . This pervasive surveillance culture fuels social conformity, undermining personal autonomy and privacy .

Technology in the story functions as a facilitator by organizing Nikki's daily schedule, providing reminders, and offering updates on her social score—streamlining her routine and guiding her actions . However, it simultaneously acts as a barrier by enforcing rigid compliance through the rating system, limiting her options and access when her score fails societal standards, as seen when she is barred from public transit and stigmatized publicly for her low rating . This dual role reflects a dependency on technology that simplifies life yet imposes control, demonstrating its capacity to both empower and restrict personal freedom .

The AI assistant orchestrates Nikki's daily agenda, influencing her decisions and actions by constantly reminding her of her score and scheduled activities, such as job interviews . It prompts societal compliance by quantifying her worth through ratings tied to opportunities and basic functionalities, pushing her to perform actions aiming to boost her score . The AI voice becomes a measuring tool of self-worth, directly impacting her self-esteem and choices, such as her pursuit of a high rating for job eligibility .

The setting accentuates the narrative's dystopian theme through its depiction of a future society dominated by technological dependency and stringent social evaluation. The constant presence of QR scanners and AI-driven interfaces evidences an environment where technology pervades daily life, dictating personal success and access to services . Public spaces filled with posters promoting high ratings as essential to well-being further root the theme of societal control and conformity . Such an environment reflects a loss of individual freedom, evoking typical characteristics of dystopian worlds where inhabitants are penalized based on societal expectations .

The story critiques the integration of health, technology, and social acceptance by showcasing how health conditions become commodified within social scoring. Nikki's diabetes is not just a medical issue but a societal liability, affecting her job eligibility and social status . The technology-driven public exposure of her condition via the QR system and ranking emphasizes how health is inappropriately intertwined with social judgment, marginalizing individuals based on health management . This commentary highlights the ethical implications of using health data to influence and control personal opportunities and societal worth .

The social rating system fosters an environment of distrust and competition, undermining traditional community bonds. Interactions become transactional, as seen when Nikki engages in public acts of kindness solely to boost her score, reducing community spirit to a biased evaluation process . The judgmental stares she receives when unable to access the subway highlight the stigma associated with low scores, exacerbating exclusion and isolation . Such a system promotes individualism over collectivism, as one's value is determined by numeric scores impacting social standing, access to resources, and social acceptance .
