Photographs

I was rummaging through my cupboard one day when I discovered

a photograph of myself. Ah! the chubby old toddler that I used to
be. In the picture, I was playing with a soft toy and my mother was
feeding me with a bottle. For the next half an hour, I could not
stop thinking about those days that would never come back.
Photographs can simply transport you to another world.
Today, photographs are required for identification purposes. I
vividly remember going to a government office with my mother to
get my Aadhar card. My school identity card has them. Nowadays,
even smartphones take a photograph of your face which serves as
a secure mechanism to unlock your phone. If you access google
and search for any person’s name, the camera will show you a
million pictures of them.
Besides identification, photographs facilitate advertising.
Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan’s face would be displayed with a
Realme smartphone. The entrance of Eden Gardens is surrounded
by screens. Kolkata Night Riders captain, Shreyas Iyer would be
standing in front along with the other men in purple. During the
2024 general election, pamphlets with images of political leaders
would be distributed.
The greatest contribution of photography was the birth of
videography. From black and white films to coloured films and
“3D” films in the future, films have become a popular form of
entertainment. I cannot stop imagining the power that a camera
has. A well-directed video can make you feel as if you have
stepped into the actor’s shoes; it can make you shiver and leap
out in excitement.
When I was in school, I had taken up photography. It was a
pleasure going around with a DSLR camera, acting as the class
photographer. Mobile phones were not permitted in school, so I
used to fill the role. Often, one of my friends would say, 'Can I
please have a picture?' and then I was the person they always
relied on. I would click their picture and bring a smile on their
faces. As a student of photography, my teacher had asked me to
read about the renowned French photographer Henri Cartier-
Bresson. He famously said, “Your First 10,000 photographs are
your worst.” That quote is not just applicable in photography, it
perhaps makes sense in every sphere of your life. I remember my
earliest clicks when I never knew how to actually use the camera.
Gradually, I matured and got a lot better at the art of
photography.
It was the very last day of our school, ‘farewell day’ or the ‘shirt
signing day’ that all of us cried. We clicked dozens of pictures with
each other promising to always stay in touch. I have a lovely
photograph of all my school friends at my desk. Even though
school is over, the photo makes me feel that my friends are
always right next to me.
Smartphones have revolutionised the way we look at photographs.
The latest ones boast 200 MP cameras which can theoretically
capture everything around with minute details. Telephoto lenses
offer such zoom capabilities that you can capture the moon.
Instagram, a social media app with more than a billion downloads
became popular with the evolution of mobile photography. Today,
Instagram allows you to scroll and view dozens of photos of any
celebrity or friend whom you follow. This app will make you feel
connected to the entire world through photography.
Undeniably, photographs have become an indispensable part of
everyday life. In today’s world, we cannot live without them. They
say, time and tide wait for no man. Every moment fades and we
cannot re-live it. So, I urge you, “if you see it, click it.”
Photography is indeed a language which has no words or sounds,
yet it manages to touch our hearts.
