Screen Time's Impact on Sleep Patterns

This project investigates the relationship between screen time and sleep patterns among students aged 13 to 18, revealing that increased screen time correlates with reduced sleep duration. Data collected from a survey of 30 students indicated that those with over 6 hours of screen time reported less than 6 hours of sleep on average. Recommendations include limiting screen time before bed and promoting awareness of healthy sleep habits.

**Introduction**

The objective of this project is to explore the relationship between screen time and sleep patterns. This
topic was chosen because of the growing concerns about how excessive use of electronic devices
impacts health, particularly among teenagers and young adults. Sleep is a vital component of health, and
understanding its connection to screen time is essential for promoting better habits.

**Method of Data Collection**

Data for this project was collected using a survey distributed to 30 students aged 13 to 18 years old. The
survey included questions about:

- Average daily screen time (in hours).

- Sleep duration on school nights and weekends (in hours).

- Types of devices most frequently used (e.g., phones, laptops, or tablets).

The data collection method was appropriate because surveys allow for the collection of both
quantitative and qualitative data from a specific target group within a short period.

**Presentation of Data**

The data collected was organized into the following tables and charts:

- **Table 1**: Average screen time versus average sleep duration for all participants.

- **Graph 1**: A bar graph showing the distribution of screen time categories ( 1-3 hours, 4-6 hours,
etc.).
- **Graph 2**: A scatter plot illustrating the relationship between screen time and sleep duration.
**Analysis of Data**

The analysis revealed the following trends:

1. Participants with higher screen time (above 6 hours daily) reported shorter sleep durations (less than
6 hours on average).

2. A negative correlation (–r value) was observed between screen time and sleep duration, indicating
that as screen time increases, sleep duration decreases.

3. Most participants used their phones within one hour before going to bed, which might contribute to
difficulty falling asleep.

Statistical measures like the mean, mode, and range of screen time and sleep duration were calculated
and summarized. For example:
- Average screen time: 5.5 hours

- Average sleep duration: 6.2 hours

**Discussion of Findings**

The findings clearly demonstrate a negative relationship between screen time and sleep patterns. The
data suggests that prolonged use of electronic devices, especially at night, contributes to reduced sleep
duration. This could be attributed to factors such as the stimulating effects of screen light and
engagement in activities like social media or gaming.

These findings align with existing studies that show excessive screen time disrupts the body’s circadian
rhythm, leading to poor sleep quality.

**Conclusion**

The investigation concludes that higher screen time negatively impacts sleep patterns, particularly
among students. The objectives of the project were met, as a clear relationship between the two
variables was identified. This underscores the importance of managing screen time to improve sleep
health.

**Recommendations**

1. Limit screen time to a maximum of 2 hours before bedtime.

2. Encourage the use of blue light filters or night mode on electronic devices.

3. Promote awareness campaigns in schools about the importance of healthy sleep habits.

4. Set up screen-free zones or times at home, especially during the evening.
