INSTRUCTOR: LOVELY M. MARAMAG, LPT

I. OVERVIEW:
In this module, you will learn about different types of MEASUREMENTS, its
importance and real life examples. Also, this module contains learning activities which
will be accomplished by the students as the instructor’s way of assessing the students’
knowledge acquisition about the presented topics.

[Link] OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. List and describe the systems of units;
b. Perform conversion of units;
c. Discuss the importance of measurements;
d. Perform rounding off numbers; and
e. Identify significant figures.

MEASUREMENT is the quantification of attributes of an object or event

which can be used to compare with other objects.
The comparison of an unknown quantity with a known quantity – The result of the
measurement is a numeric value with certain units. We can measure the length, mass,
capacity (volume), and temperature of any given object.
UNITS AND SYSTEM
METRIC SYSTEM INTERNATIONAL SYSTEMS OF UNIT

The international system of units is the

I. The metric system is a system of most widely used system of measurement,
measurement that uses the meter, liter, and is the modern form of the metric
and gram as base units of length system. At its core, this system is built on
(distance), capacity (volume), and weight seven primary units. This system specifies
(mass) respectively. As we move to the twenty prefixes to the unit symbols and
left, each unit is 10 times greater than the name to state multiples and fractions of
unit to its right. each unit.

Derived Units
It is unit measurement in the SI units is derived from one or more of
the seven base units.

CONVERSION OF UNITS
The conversion between different units of measurement for the same quantity,
typically through multiplicative conversion factors.
UNIT CONVERSION PROCESS
STEP 1: Identify the unit you have.
STEP 2: Identify the unit you want.
STEP 3. Identify the appropriate unit conversion factors.
STEP 4. Cancel units and perform the math calculations.
STEP 5: Evaluate the result

2.) 0.206 kilopascals to pascals

EXAMPLE 2:
How many inches tall is a man who is 6 feet tall?
EXAMPLE 3:
When buying a television, the screen size is measured in inches between opposite
corners. How many feet across is a 45-inch television?

EXAMPLE 4:
How many pounds are in 435 ounces?
EXAMPLE 5 :
A student averaged 45 miles per hour on a trip. What was the student's speed in feet
per second?

DENSITY
Density is a word we use to describe how much space an object or substance takes up
(its volume) in relation to the amount of matter in that object or substance (its mass).
Another way to put it is that density is the amount of mass per unit of volume. If an
object is heavy and compact, it has a high density.

EXAMPLE
You have a rock with a volume of 15cm³ and a mass of 45 g. What is its density?
EXAMPLE
You decide you want to carry a boulder home from the beach. It is 30 centimeters on
each side, and so has a volume of 27,000 cm³. It is made of granite, which has a typical
density of 2.8 g/cm³. How much will this boulder weight?
EXAMPLE
The density of water at 0 degree Celsius is 0.99987 g/mL. What is mass in kilograms of
185.0mL of water? Mass= 0.99987 g/mL x 185.0mL = 185 g/1000g= 0.185kg

SIGNIFICANT FIGURES
The term significant figures refer to the number of important single digits (0 through 9
inclusive) in the coefficient of an expression in scientific notation. The number of
significant figures in an expression indicates the confidence or precision with which an
engineer or scientist states a quantity.
Rules in significant figures
1. Non-zero digits are always significant.

2. Any zeros between two significant digits are significant . 066690

3. A final zero or trailing zeros in the decimal portion ONLY are significant.
ROUNDING - OFF NUMBERS
Rounding off is uniting an answer to given degree of accuracy.
Examples:
1483 (nearest hundreds) 1500 4.483 (nearest tenth) 4.5
446 (nearest hundreds) 400 4.483 (nearest hundredth) 4.48

1. Round off the following:
a) 1099 – round off to the nearest hundreds
b) 853.46 – round off to the nearest hundreds
c) 2.3 – round off to the nearest whole number
d) 17.81 – round off to the nearest whole number
e) 6.528 – round off to the nearest tenth (or to 1 decimal place)
f) 23.245 – round off to the nearest hundredth (or to 2 decimal places)

2. Conversion
1. The volume of the earth's oceans is estimated to be 1.5 x 1018 kiloliters. What is its
volume in gallons?
2. Convert 4.352 micrograms to megagrams.
3. The hottest part of the flame on a Bunsen burner is found to be 2.15 x10 3 K. What is
this temperature in oC and oF?
4. There is 4.07 x106 lb of sulfuric acid used to make Jell-O each year. Convert this to
kilograms.
5. The density of blood plasma is 1.03 g/mL. A typical adult has about 2.5 L of blood
plasma. What is the mass in kilograms of the blood plasma in this person?
