SURVEYING

On 2nd day, I had seen and learn about surveying. A Surveying is a crucial aspects of
construction. The key elements of the surveying process are

Preliminary Research: Gather existing data about the area, including property
boundaries, Topography, and legal considerations.

Field Reconnaissance: Visit the site to assess its physical characteristics, potential
challenges, and Environmental factors.

Establish Control Points: Set up reference points with known coordinates to provide a
basis for all Measurements on the site.

Topographic Survey: Measure and map the elevation, contours, and natural features of
the land.

Boundary Survey: Determine and demarcate property boundaries, ensuring accurate land
ownership information.

Construction Survey: Provide layout and staking for the construction of structures,
ensuring they align with the design plans.

As-Built Survey: Verify that constructed elements match the design Specifications,
documenting any deviations.

Global Positioning System: Use GPS technology for precise location measurements in
large-scale Projects. Geodetic Survey Consider the Earth’s curvature and rotation, especially in
large-scale Projects covering significant distances.

4
Hydrographic Survey: Measure and map underwater features, crucial for projects
involving water bodies.

Surveying involves several types of layouts, each serving a specific purpose are

Baseline Layout: Establishing a baseline, a straight line used as a reference for other
measurements. Commonly used in large-scale surveys.

Leveling Layout: Determining the elevation differences between points. Essential for
ensuring proper grading and drainage. These layouts are selected based on the goals of the survey
and the specific characteristics of the area being surveyed.

TOTAL STATION

A total station (TS) or total station theodolite (TST) is an electronic/optical instrument

used for surveying and building construction. It is an electronic transit theodolite integrated with
electronic distance measurement (EDM) to measure both vertical and horizontal angles and the
slope distance from the instrument to a particular point, and an on-board computer to collect data
and perform triangulation calculations.

Function: Angle measurement, Distance measurement, Coordinate measurement, Data

processing.

Applications: Total stations are mainly used by land surveyors and civil engineers, either
to record features as in topographic surveying or to set out features (such as Roads, houses or
boundaries). They are also used by archaeologists to record excavations and by police, crime scene
investigators, private accident reconstructionist and insurance companies to take measurements of
scenes.

THIRD DAY

SITE CLEARANCE AND CONSTRUCTION STEPS

SITE CLEARANCE

On 3rd day, I had seen and learn about site clearance and various construction steps for
building construction. Site clearance is to be designated land area meant for constructing a
particular building is Known as a ‘site.’ In situations where the piece of land has been abandoned
for a long time, it’s likely to have trees, weeds, and debris on the land. The first thing to do here is
to get rid of such items that might obstruct construction.

It involves clearing a site of any machinery or equipment, unwanted surplus materials,

rubbish, and so on. Site clearance may also involve clearing away vegetation and surface soil, and
levelling and preparing the ground for the planned construction works. Safety is the primary
contributor to the importance of a clean construction site, but keeping the work area tidy can also
provide a boost to your efficiency.

Site clearance is essentially going back to the drawing board. It involves the removal of
waste to ensure that an area or stretch of land is free from any hazards and starting from a blank
canvas before preparing the land for its desired use. The process of site clearance is the use of
specialist heavy machinery, a skilled team with the expertise and knowledge of operating the
required equipment and the means to legally dispose of the waste.

FOURTH DAY

SITE MARKING & EARTHWORK EXCAVATION

SITE MARKING

On 4th day, I had seen and learn about site marking and earthwork in excavation work on
site. Excavation is a fundamental component of construction projects, involving the removal of
earth to create space for foundations, basements, trenches, or other purpose. Marking is the
process of establishing temporary frames of reference, so as to use them to complete a given
activity according to its dimensional and positional requirements. Marking helps in maintaining is
dimensional accuracy nullifying or minimizing errors. When beginning of a construction project, it
is important to take care in properly setting up the foundation. With reference to the benchmark
markings are carried out. Before marking firstly check whether the layout is inclined, square or
rectangular. Even if its inclined, the building wall should be straight and right angle only. After the
base mark on each side of the layout the line Marking is done with respect to the room
measurement.

MARKING PROCEDURE

 Site marking is one of the starting point of your construction.

 In this activity, your Engineer and Masteri will identify pillar placements.
 Once pillars placement is identified based on soil condition earthwork will start.
 The engineer will mark the area around the pillar. Earth workers will marked area.
Depending on soil condition pillar depth.
8
[Link].4.1 Layout for Excavation

EXCAVATION

Excavation is the process of moving earth, rock or other materials with tools, equipment or
explosives. It includes earthwork, trenching, wall shafts, tunneling, and underground. Excavation
is used in construction to create building foundations, reservoirs, and roads. Some of the different
processes used in excavation include trenching, digging, and dredging and site development. The
processes used will depend upon the structure that will result from the construction process.
Drawings for earth work excavation for foundation should contain all necessary drawings showing
the areas to be excavated, filled, sequence of priorities etc. Engineer at site shall follow strictly
such drawings. For excavation for drain work, the sides and the bottoms should be to the required
slope, shape and gradient. The cutting shall be done from top to bottom. Under no circumstances
shall undermining or under cutting be allowed. The final surface shall be neatly levelled and well
compacted. The earth from the cutting shall be directly used for filling either in plinth or on
grounds.

9

FIFTH DAY

LEVELLING
On 5th day, I had seen and learn about levelling and layouts. A level surface is defined as a
curved surface which at each point is perpendicular to the direction of gravity at the point. The
surface of a still water is a truly level surface. Our, Site Levelling was done using a surveying
instrument called Auto Level. The land survey was initiated to gather detailed data essential for
understanding the land’s current state and potential uses. The main instrument for surveyors on
site today is Dumpy level.

DUMPY LEVEL

The dumpy level was set up at a known reference point with a stable tripod. Calibration
checks were performed to ensure the accuracy of the instrument. Permanent benchmarks were
established at strategic locations within the survey area. Benchmarks were carefully documented
with their coordinates and elevations. The dumpy level was sighted on each benchmark and
readings were recorded from levelling staff. The survey was organized into several leveling loops
for redundancy and error checking. Intermediate points were selected to form a network
connecting the benchmarks. Elevations at these points were measured and the data were recorded.
Cross-sections were taken to capture changes in elevation along specific lines. Spot heights were
measured to record elevations at critical locations. Contour lines were drawn on the map

10
connecting points of equal elevation. Contour intervals were determined based on the nature of the
terrain and project requirements.

SIXTH DAY

FOOTING & RCC COULUMN

On 6th day, I had seen and learnt about the footing and column rising. Footing are structural
member used to support column and wall and to transmit and distribute their load to the soil in
such a way that the load bearing capacity of the soil is not exceeded, excessive settlement,
differential settlement or rotation are prevented and adequate safety against overturning or sliding
is maintenance.

FOOTING

A concrete support under a foundation that rests in solid ground is known as footing.
Footings distribute the weight of structure over the ground. Type of footing

Spread footing

These are primarily used for individual columns or posts. They act as single foundations
that specifically support and distribute the load of each column to the ground, suitable for
instances where columns are spaced apart. Used for individual columns or posts, these footings

11
support and distribute the load of each column to the ground. It is a very common type of
foundation and is used for ordinary buildings.

The following steps for the footing construction are

 Earth work excavation.

 Treatment of masonry structures
 Base concrete(PCC) upto 100mm.
 Plinth filling for column using square footing column size is (750mm x 750mm)
 Square footings are adopted on this site.
 Concrete used for footing is of M25 grade.
 Steel used is of Fe 415 TMT grade.

RCC COLUMN

On 6th day, I had visited the another residential construction work under the control of
[Link] Builders Civil Engineers & Contractors .There we had visit and learn the
construction process of RCC Column.

The construction process of RCC columns :

 The first step in column construction is determining the layout of the columns.
 This involves placing ropes in the grid lines and labeling the position of columns.
 Accurate column layouts are essential for the overall structural integrity of the building.
 Column reinforcement is a critical step to ensure the strength and stability of the columns.
 Columns are rigid vertical structural members designed primarily to support axial
compressive loads coming from beams and slabs and then transfer it to ground through
footing.
 A column is a structural element that transmits, through compression, the weight of the
structure above to other structural element below. In other words it is a compression
member.

12
 ln the erection of the reinforcement of columns, it is the first we make sure that the starter
bars are in correct position with correct cover spacing.
 Then required amount of shear links were placed on the columns.
 After that vertical bars attached to the starter bars and bind with correct spacing.
 Checking of the reinforcement is done as per the structural drawing wherein we check.

SEVENTH DAY

SAND FILLING

On 7th day, I had seen and learn about sand filling. Sand filling is commonly used in
construction for purposes such as creating building foundations, raising ground levels, improving
drainage, or preparing surfaces for landscaping. The process requires careful planning, adherence
to specifications, and quality control measures to ensure the desired results. It provides good
drainage and stability. Ensure proper compaction and consider consulting with a structural
engineer for specific project requirements.

Soil filling is one of the essential features required for every construction project. So that
the site gets developed and prepared for construction. In this article, We will discuss how to
calculate the quantity of soil/sand and no. of trally/tucks required for filling in the plot.
13

EIGHTH DAY

ANTI-CRASH BARRIERS & BEARING

CRASH BARRIER

On 8th day, I had learn about anti crash barriers and bearing. The traffic barriers, sometimes
called crash barriers, guard rail, keep vehicles within their roadway and prevent vehicles from
colliding with dangerous obstacles such as boulders, buildings, walls or large storm drains. Traffic
barriers are also installed at the road side to prevent errant vehicles from traversing steep
(nonrecoverable) slopes or entering deep water. M35 concrete mix was used and 0.50 metre wide
anti crash barriers.

BEARINGS

A bearing is a component of a bridge which typically connects the bridge piers to the
bridge deck. The purpose of a bearing is to allow controlled movement and thereby reduce the
stresses involved. Movement could be thermal expansion or contraction, or movement from other
sources such as seismic activity.

The oldest form of bridge bearing is simply two plates resting on top of each other. A
common form of modern bridge bearing is the elastomeric bridge bearing. Elastomeric bridge
bearing are a commonly used modern bridge bearing.

There are several different similar types of bridge bearings that include neoprene bearing
pads, neoprene bridge bearings, laminated elastomeric bearings and seismic isolators which are all
generally referred to as bridge bearing pads in the construction industry. Internal structure consists
of a sandwich of mild steel shims and rubber moulded as one unit.

The transmission media is the “bearing”, one of the most important components of a bridge
structure.

TYPES OF BEARING

Fixed Bearing

15
Fixed bearing does not allow bearing plane two-direction movements, but allows it to
rotate.

Guided Bearing

Guided bearing allows rotation and the bearing plane to do one-direction movement. The
main components of a guided bearing are the same as those of a fixed bearing, but are able to
provide longitudinal movement function.

NINTH DAY

EXPANSION JOINTS & MEDIAN

EXPANSION JOINTS

An expansion joint is an assembly designed to safely absorb the Thermal expansion heat-
induced expansion and contraction of construction materials, to absorb vibration, to hold parts

16
together or to allow movement due to ground settlement or earthquakes. • Bridge expansion joints
are designed to allow for continuous traffic between structures accommodating movement,
shrinkage, temperature variations on reinforced and prestressed concrete, composite and steel
structures. They stop the bridge from bending out of place in extreme conditions and allow enough
vertical movement to permit bearing replacement.

DETAILS ABOUT THE SITE

Expansion joint shall be strip

Cater for design movement of minimum 20 mm

[Link].9.1 Expansion Joints Between the Slab

MEDIAN

• Important highway element that are built in order to distinguish between the differences
in passage directions of traffic on a road.

The specifications of median are as:

• Width = 0.9m,

• Height=13.5cm

• Grade of concrete used=M30

TENTH DAY

RCC SLAB CASTING

On 10th day, I had seen and learnt about slab casting. A brief guide to the RCC slab casting
process are

 To prepare the site for RCC slab casting.

 Once the site is prepared, the next step is to build the formwork.
 Reinforcing the Slab.
 Pouring the Concrete.
 Finishing the Surface.

Cast-in-place concrete or cast-in-situ concrete is a technology of construction of buildings

where walls and slabs of the buildings are cast at the site in formwork. This differs from precast
concrete technology where slabs are cast else where and then brought to the construction site and
assembled. Slab Centring Open- 14 to 24 Days depending upon the slab or beam span. Full slab
shuttering should be removed after ten days. Beams and arches removal required 14 days. If
beams and arches are more than 6 meters, the centering removal time should be 21 days.

18
[Link].10.1 Slab Casting Work

ELEVENTH DAY

RCC SLAB & BEAM

On day 11th,I had seen and learn the RCC Slab & Beam ceiling concrete techniques. The concrete
ceiling construction is a critical aspect of the overall project, aiming to provide structural integrity,
aesthetic appeal, and functional support to the designated spaces.

The primary objectives of the concrete ceiling construction:

1. To create a durable ceiling structure.

2. To adhere to architectural and engineering specifications.
3. To meet safety and quality standards.
4. Formwork installation to define the shape of the ceiling.
5. Placement and consolidation of concrete mixtures.
6. Curing and finishing of the concrete surface.

ROOF SLAB

Reinforced concrete slab design and detailing guidelines for depth of slab, loads on slab,
reinforcement guide for one-way and two-way slabs as per IS 456:2000 have been tried to present
here. The grade-M25 1: 1.5 :3. structural concrete slab are constructed to provide falt surface,
usually horizontal, in building floor, roof bridges and other types of structure. The slab may be
supported walls, by reinforced concrete beams usually cast monolithically with the slab, by

19
structural steel beams, by columns, or by the ground. The depth of a slab is usually very small
compared to its span.

One Way Slab

One-way slab is supported by beams on the two opposite sides to carry the load along one
direction. The ratio of longer span (Lx) to shorter span (Ly) is equal or greater than 2, considered
as One-way slab.

[Link].11.1 One Way Slab

Two Way Slab

Two-way slab is supported by beams on all the four sides and the loads are carried by the
supports along both directions, it is known as two-way slab. In two-way slab, the ratio of longer
span (Lx) to shorter span (Ly) is less than 2. The slabs are likely to bend along both the directions
to the four supporting edges and hence distribution reinforcement is provided in both the
directions.

[Link].11.2 Two Way Slab

The roof beam is connected to the roof slabs and beams to prevent separation during
rebound. The connection will be designed to prevent composite action between roof slab and roof

20
beam because composite action increases bending capacity while not increasing the beam shear
capacity. neglecting this effect could be very conservative.

[Link].11.3 RCC Slab & Beam

TWELFTH DAY

CURING AND QUALITY CONTROL

On 12th day, I had visited the another residential construction site work under the control of
[Link] Civil Engineers & Contractors. There we had visit and learn the Curing and
Quality control work.

De-shuttering

It is the process of removing formwork after the concrete gains its proper strength, after
this process of curing starts which is discussed below.

Curing

Curing was done for reducing crack due to evolving of thermal heat and to do so at our site
Gunny bags & Sprinkling method of curing was used.

Curing of concrete

21
There are various methods of curing. The adoption of a particular method will depend
upon The nature of work and the climate conditions. The following methods of curing of concrete
are generally adopted.

 Covering concrete surface with gunny bags.

 Sprinkling of water.
 ponding method.
 Membrane curing.
 Steam curing.

Covering concrete surface with gunny bags

It’s a widely used method of curing, particularly for structural concrete. Thus exposed
surface of concrete is prevented from drying out by covering it with gunny bags, canvas or empty
cement bags. The covering over vertical and sloping surfaces should be securing properly. These
are periodically wetted. The interval of wetting will depend upon the rate of evaporation of water.
It should be ensured that the surface of concrete is not allowed to dry even for a short time during
the curing period. Special arrangement for keeping the surface wet must be made at nights and on
holidays.

[Link].12.1 Covering concrete surface with gunny bags

Ponding of water

Ponding of water continuously on the concrete surface provides an efficient curing. It is

mostly used for curing floor slabs. The concrete should be allowed to set sufficiently before

22
sprinkling is started. The spray can be obtained from a perforated plastic box. On small jobs
sprinkling of water may be done by hand. Vertical and sloping surfaces can be kept continuously
wet by sprinkling water on top surfaces and allowing it to run down between the forms and the
concrete. For this method of curing the water requirement is higher.

After concrete is placed, the concrete increases in strength very quickly for a period of 3-7
days. Concrete which is moist cured for 7 days is about 50% stronger than uncured concrete.
Water curing can be done after the slab pour by building dams with soil around the house and
flooding the slab.

[Link].12.2 Ponding of water

THIRTEENTH DAY

PLUMBING & PLASTERING WORK

PLUMBING WORK
On 13th day, I had gained knowledge on the plumbing and plastering works. The piping
phase of the construction project involved the installation of various piping systems to facilitate
water supply, drainage, and gas distribution.

The primary objectives of the piping works were to:

 Install a reliable and efficient water supply system.

 Implement an effective drainage system.

23
 Establish secure gas lines for the entire project.

Plumbing Work Activities on piping works involved the installation are

 PVC pipes for water supply.

 HDPE pipes for drainage.
 Steel pipes for gas distribution.
 Installation methods included welding for steel pipes and solvent cementing for PVC
pipes.
 The layout and sizing were designed to meet project specifications and local building
codes.

[Link].13.1 Pipe Installation

Good plumbing will help make sure that there are air gaps, physical separations, and
adherence to building codes that separate connections of waste and clean water plumbing
elements. Regular plumbing maintenance can prevent cross-contamination, hence keeping the
water in your home clean and safe at all times.

PLASTERING WORK

Plastering can be started only a properly cured and dry surface. All quality checks for
blocks work should be completed. The plaster specifications like the thickness of plaster and the
type of finish should be clarified with architect Hacking of concrete surfaces should be
completedas per requirements.

24
The electrical box fixing works should be done as per electrical drawing, once the
electrical box fixing is over, all the chased area in the walls will have to be packed with concrete.
All expanded metal mesh works should be complete and cured for 3 days before plastering. Plaster
is a building material used for the protective or decorative coating of walls and ceilings and for
molding and casting decorative elements.

Plastering can be done with variety of materials like cement mortar, gypsum, lime readily
available branded plastering mortars.

[Link].13.2 Plastering Work

FOURTEENTH DAY

TILES LAYING & PAINTING

On 13th day, I had seen laying of tiles. The project involved laying ceramic tiles site
inspection. A thorough site inspection was conducted to assess the condition of the existing floor
and identify any necessary repairs or modifications.

TILES INSTALLATION

Layout Planning
25
A detailed layout plan was established to optimize tile placement, taking into consideration
patterns, edges and transitions between different spaces.

Tiles Cutting

Precision cutting was carried out using [tools] to ensure accurate fit around edges, corners,
and obstacles.

Adhesive Application

High-quality adhesive was applied according to the manufacturer’s guidelines ensuring a

strong bond between the tiles and the floor.

Grout lines were carefully filled, excess grout was cleaned, and a finishing touch was
applied to enhance the overall appearance.

[Link].14.1 Tiles Installation

PAINTING

On 14th day, I had seen the painting works in another residential building construction
inspection and repair of surface imperfections. Cleaning and sanding surfaces to ensure proper
adhesion of paint. Application of primer to enhance paint adhesion and provide a uniform base.
Selection and application of high-quality paint as per the client’s specifications. Multiple coats
applied to achieve the desired finish. Coordination with the client to finalize color choices.
Ensuring consistency and accuracy in color application. Proper masking and protection of areas
26
not intended for painting. All surfaces were inspected and necessary repairs were carried out.
Cleaning and sanding of surfaces were completed. Primer application was carried out
systematically. Adequate drying time was allowed between coats. Paint application was executed
according to the planned schedule. Multiple coats were applied to achieve the desired opacity and
finish. Final inspection to ensure even coverage and quality finish. Removal of masking materials
and thorough clean-up of the work area.
