Background of the Study

Mobile gaming, particularly games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), today has

been a necessity of daily life amongst millions of youth and college going students. Mobile

Legends was developed in 2016 by Moonton and has gained thousands of fans in a small period

of time, primarily owing to its availability to mobile players. Stake and strategic elements, soon

with friends and team plays, and ability of real-time chatting make this game very interesting. It

has therefore tended to draw a wide demographic of players; in this case, college students are for

instance one of the biggest communities. In Concepcion Holy Cross College, most Criminology

students – like students around the globe – heavily engage with playing Mobile Legends. One

students of Criminology because there are certain figures of skills that can be useful in their

studies As for specifics, potential uses of these skills in learning may include case analysis,

research, or team work. The disparity of the studies conducted suggests the need for a us study

on the impact of the game Mobile legends to the studies of students in Concepcion Holy Cross

College. While many students love the social and perceptual recreational patterns of gaming, it is

important to map out time for leisure and focus on the academic pursuits especially in

competitive academic courses such as Criminology. The conceptual frame work of this study is

aimed to understand how Criminology students from Concepcion Holy Cross College balance

their academic activities and their gaming profile. This research seeks to establish whether

Mobile Legends has a positive impact, no impact or a negative impact on the students’

performance by analyzing the given results: The time spent on Mobile Legends, deductions on

class performance due to Mobile Legends, changes in study schedules due to Mobile Legends,

and academic engagement as influenced by Mobile Legends.


Furthermore, the research will explore the students’ attitude towards the impact of games

in students’ personal lives and academic performance. Do students know the consequences of too

much gaming? Does it make them think that abilities coming from game such as Mobile Legends

are useful one in the academic or professional facets? If one is able to determine the type of

attitude students have towards gaming, it would enrich the future research concerning the impact

of such a phenomenon for students’ academic lives. This research is relevant as more mobile

games are incorporated into students’ daily lifestyle and with the advancement in technology,

leaning relies massively on mobile apps. Therefore, this research will help in filling the existing

literature gap and help understand the correlation between mobile gaming, Mobile Legends in

particular and academic performance. The research findings could help educators and parents

explain to students, how possible it is to balance between gaming and academic work so that

gaming does not turn to be an academic related hindrance. Also, the study could help to create

policies or plans in academic institutions to moderate play in balancing intellectual concentration

on lesson materials. This study therefore sought to fill this knowledge gap through a study on the

effects of Mobile Legends on Criminology students’ performance in their courses, with hope of

providing valid information that would be of great importance when thinking of long-term

implications on students’ performance.

Mobile game is a hot issue of conversation among youth, including college students in

Metro Manila, and Santos and Cuerpo (2020) tried to establish its connection with academic

performance among college students. According to the study, the students who took over fifteen

hours on mobile video games had lower grades than those who spent less time on video games.
These students argued that gaming paved way for lack of time management, procrastination and

getting inadequate sleep they all of which effected their scholastic obligations. According to

Santos and Cuerpo (2020), the type of mobile games, such as Mobile Legends that allow play for

a long period of time can interfere with students’ learning and their academic performance.

In the same regard, and in the context of Philippines university students, Cruz et al.,

(2019, authored their study on the effects of mobile games on students’ academic performance.

In the current study, it was noted that the “over-users of mobile games” have a tendency of

performing dismally in their studies. These effects, they explained were due to the fact that

extended gaming time limited the time the students spent on their books and also caused the

students to be weary hence they could not concentrate during their classes.

Mobile gaming has come not only as an influence in influencing the Filipino youth, but

most notably students. The learners of Concepcion Holy Cross revealed that those studying

criminology tend to use gadgets more particularly for leisure, entertainment, recreation, and

friendship by playing mobile games. However, the increasing popularity of games like Mobile

Legends : Mobile has been found to have some effects which raises a question whether the

effects impact on performance.


Studies conducted in the Philippines establish that use of the mobile gadget to play games

affects the student in that he or she records poor performance when the gadget is overused. Some

preliminary results suggest that time spent on mobile games has been associated with aspects that

negatively affect time use regarding the study time, focused class listening, class performance

and low academic achievement. Mobile game usage for the games that need frequent use of the

mobile has been realized to lead to the poor time management hence low GWA as noted by

Southern Baptist College study.

However, there has not been lacks of finding some favourable outcomes of mobile

games. Of these, amicable features like strategic thinking and various forms of teamwork are

easily scalable for positive achievement in academe if the gaming feature is moderated. The

biggest challenge is to balance the time between gaming and the school and/or work. To students

of criminology who must have heard of the task awaiting them, I inferred from the above rules

that what is prohibited is moderation and well timed planning.

This research therefore aim at finding out the level of mobile gaming impact on the

academic achievements of Concepcion Holy Cross Criminology students in its positive and

negative aspects.
