Factors Influencing Political Ideology

The study investigates how various factors such as opinions on diversity, income inequality, and religion influence political ideology, finding that higher ratings on rural citizens, capitalism, and police correlate with more conservative views. The regression analysis yielded a significant r-square value of 0.6, indicating a strong relationship between the variables and political ideology, particularly highlighting the impact of diversity and immigration opinions. The results suggest that to further refine the findings, additional variables related to conservative and liberal beliefs should be included in future research.

Research Question:

How well does opinion on diversity, income inequality, religion, rural citizens, capitalism, police, trans
people, muslim people, and antifa explain variation in political ideology?

Measures:
Notable attributes to this experiment:

- The mean for political ideology was 3.9. This means that the majority of included participants of
the regression were moderately conservative. However, this does not effect the regression
calculations.

Variable for political ideology:

- Lcself: Political ideology? 1 to 5; Very liberal to Very Conservative

Variables used to explain variation in political ideology:

- Diversity: Does the increasing number of people of many different races and ethnic groups in the
United States make this country a better place to live, a worse place to live, or does it make
no difference?: 1 to 7; A lot better to a lot worse
- Rich Poor: How important is it that our elected officials pass laws and regulations that reduce the
income differences between rich people and poor people? 1 to 5; extremly important to not
important at all
- Milactive duty: Have you enlisted in the past, are you currently enlisted, or have you never
enlisted?
o Recoded into Previous or Current association with military service(1) and Never
invloved(0)
- Pew_religionimp: How important is religion to you? 1 to 4; Very important to not important
- Ftgay: Feeling thermometer for homosexuality: 0 to 100
- Ftcapitalist: Feeling thermometer for capitialism: 0 to 100
- Ftpolice: Feeling thermometer for police: 0 to 100
- Fttrans: Feeling thermometer for Trans people: 0 to 100
- Ftmuslim: Feeling thermometer for Mulsim people: 0 to 100
- Ftantifa: Feeling thermometer for Antifa: 0 to 100

Methods:
I will be conducting a forwards step-wise multiple linear regression. At the end fo the forward step-wise
regression all variables with a insignficant slope were removed.
Summary of fit:

The r-square value is derived by dividing SSR by SST. It tells us the ratio of explained variace divided by
the total variance. It gives us a value between 0 and 1. A high r-square value tells us how well the fit line
explains the variation of observations.

F-test:

The overall fit-line that is construction is analyzed with an F test. The null hypothesis for this test is that
the fit-line gives us the same result as the mean of the y-variable. The alternate hypothesis is that the
line for the mean of y is different than the fit line. The alternate hypothesis is accepted if the probability
of the f-ratio is significant. F is equal to the mean square of regression/mean square of residual error.
Since the r-square for this experiment was not great, the F test will allow us to double check whether we
should consider this experiment to make conclusions.

Individual t-tests:

Each variable is given a t-test to prove whether that variable should be utilized in the final regression line
of fit. The null hypothesis is that the slope found for the specific variable is equal to 0. The alternative
hypothesis is that the slope found is not equal to 0. Even though the slope will usually not be equal to
zero it will be considered as 0 if the probability of t is not significant. A significant t value means rejected
the null hypothesis and using the t value. Since, I am doing a backwards stepwise regression any p(t)
value that is not significant will be removed from the final regression calculation.

Effects tests:

This is an f-test that is conducted on each individual variable. The same information regarding null and
alternate hypothesis’s apply from the overall f-test. This test tells us whether a single variable
contributes to explaining the variation in the overall regression. If the p(f) is significant, then the
individual variable should be considered since it significantly contributes to the prediction of y.

Lack of fit test:

This is another f-test that tells us whethere the model has enough independent variables to predict y
values. We did not talk about this test so I will assume I don’t have to explain the calculations for the f
statistic.

Discussion and Conclusion:

Higher ratings on rural citizes, capitalism, and police lead to more conservative tendency. Lower ratings
on trans people, muslims, and antifi lead to lead to more conservative tendency. Wanting less diversity
and less focus on changing income imequality leads to more conservative tendency. Finally, being less
religious leads to less conservativism. Based on widely accepted assumptions on the beliefs of
conservatives, all factors make sense. Conservative parties tend to rate capitalism highly and choose
presediential candiates who will boost the economy, reject notions to increase immigration and
therefore diversity, allocate more money into police and military uses, disapprove of gay-favoring policies
based on religious beliefs, and finally to have higher incomes since conservatives parties are not infavor
of “taxing the rich” and typically benefit large businesses.

One notable value from the regression fit-line is the value for slope of “diversity”. It is 0.16 which is
almost much higher than any other variable’s slope except religion. This tells us that every other variable
does not have too much impact on political ideology in comparison to a persons thoughts on diversity
and immigration in the U.S.

All f tests and t-tests are signficant in the final model created. An r-square of 0.6 was found.

The next step I would take to refine the results is adding in more variables. The variables would include
questions that relate to different factors within what makes up a conservative vs a liberal. Questions on
diversity, gay rights, military/police, capitalism, and etc have been convered. I would add in questions
pertaining to abortion, war, government participation, and etc.

The study indicates that higher ratings of law enforcement correlate with more conservative political ideologies. Conservatives generally advocate for stronger law enforcement and defense policies, seeing police as essential to maintaining societal order, which aligns with their broader governance philosophy .

The regression model indicates that a more negative sentiment towards diversity is associated with a more conservative political ideology. This is reflected by the notable slope value for the 'diversity' variable, which is almost higher than any other variable's slope except for religion. Thus, attitudes towards diversity significantly impact political ideology, marking it as a substantial influencer in the model .

The r-square value is crucial because it indicates how well the independent variables explain the variance of the dependent variable, thus assessing the model’s fit. In this study, an r-square value of 0.6 suggests that 60% of the variance in political ideology can be explained by the selected variables, which shows a moderately strong fit but also indicates room for incorporating more predictors for better accuracy .

The study finds that higher ratings of capitalism are associated with a more conservative political ideology. This aligns with the typical conservative endorsement of economic policies that favor business and wealth accumulation, reflecting their general economic priorities and beliefs .

The findings indicate that lower ratings on the feeling thermometer for trans people correlate with a more conservative political ideology. This suggests that conservative ideologies often do not support progressive policies on gender identity issues, which contrasts with more liberal stances that tend to endorse such rights and recognize them as critical social issues .

Being less religious leads to decreased conservatism as conservatism traditionally includes strong affiliations with religious ideologies which often guide social and moral policies. The regression indicates that lesser importance placed on religion correlates with liberal ideologies, deviating from the established moral and social policies backed by conservative movements .

Statistical evidence in the form of t-test results supports the significant impact of diversity opinions, indicating that its slope is one of the highest, suggesting a strong predictive capacity in political ideology variation. Its significance in the model underscores diversity’s critical role in shaping ideological tendencies .

The lack of fit test in the regression model suggests that the model may not have enough independent variables to accurately predict political ideology outcomes, implying that significant variations are left unexplained. Thus, the next step to improve the model would be to incorporate additional variables such as views on abortion, war, and government participation to capture a broader spectrum of factors influencing political ideologies .

The forwards step-wise multiple linear regression method is relevant as it incrementally includes variables in the model only if they significantly improve the model’s predictive capability. This highlights which factors most substantially explain variation in political ideology and ensures that the final model consists of only statistically significant predictors .

The study does not report a strong link between military service and political ideology. This absence of significant findings suggests that military service might not be a decisive factor in shaping political views within the scope of this analysis. The model focuses more on other variables like diversity, capitalism, and religious beliefs as stronger determinants .
