INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS

• Use the required naming convention, typically including your name, course code, and assignment number
(e.g., Ali_ITEC-251_Assignment#[Link]).
• Use font Times New Roman, and font size 14 for title page text and make it bold.
• Use font Times New Roman, and font size 12 for rest of the pages. Make headings bold.
• Use 1.5 spacing with 1-inch margins on all sides.
• Include page numbers on each page except the title page.
• Do not leave blank spaces between paragraphs.

management systems, analytical skills in comparing different techniques, and applicative skills in
applying these concepts to real-world scenarios. (1.1, 1.2, 2.2)
Instructions:
• Create a group of 2 to 3 students.
• Mention clearly the ID and Name for Each student in the Group in a separate line.

Answer the following questions in relation to the chosen topic.
Q1) Explain the concept of storage systems in database management. Differentiate between primary and
secondary storage. Discuss the importance of file organization in a database system and explain the differences
between sequential and random file organization. Provide examples to illustrate each type.
Q2) Define RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) and describe the different levels of RAID
configurations. Compare and contrast RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 5 in terms of data redundancy and
performance. Explain how file operations like read, write, and update are affected by different RAID levels.
Q3) Discuss the significance of indexing in database management. Explain the differences between static
indexing and dynamic indexing. Compare and contrast hashing with indexing, highlighting the advantages and
disadvantages of each method. Provide examples to demonstrate the use of indexing and hashing in improving
query performance.
Q4) Define spanned and un-spanned records in the context of database systems. Explain how spanned records
are stored in a file structure. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using spanned records in comparison
to un-spanned records. Provide a scenario where using spanned records would be beneficial in a database
application.
