MCL 132 METAL FORMIMG AND PRESS TOOLS

PROBLEM SHEET – 1

1. A tensile specimen with a 12 mm initial diameter. and 50 mm gage length reaches

max. Load at 90 kN and fracture at 70 kN. The min. diameter at fracture is 10 mm .
Determine the a) engg. stress at max. load (UTS), b) true fracture stress, c) true fracture
strain and d) engg. strain at fracture. (796 MPa, 891 MPa, 0.365, 0.44)

2. A 13 mm diameter tensile specimen has a 50 mm gage length. The load

corresponding to 0.2% offset is 68 kN and the max. load is 84 kN. Fracture
occurs at 73 kN. The dia. after fracture is 8 mm and the gage length at fracture is 65
mm. Calculate YS, UTS, % elongation and the reduction in area. (502 MPa, 620
MPa, 30%, 62%)

3. Show that at the point of necking, true uniform strain is equal to the strain
hardening exponent for a material obeying power law of hardening.

4. If the true stress strain curve is given by  = 14000.33 (MPa) for a material, what is
the UTS of the material? (698 MPa)

5. Uniaxial tensile test was conducted on a specimen with 50 mm gage length and
10mm diameter ultimate load was found to be 44 kN and the elongation at max. load
was 25%. What is the equation for the flow stress during plastic deformation? Also
calculate the work of deformation (ideal plastic work) required to reach the max. load
in the above test.

6. The flow stress of the material in a hot working process is 90 MPa at a strain rate of
0.001 /sec. What will the increase in flow stress if the strain rate is increased by 10
times? The strain rate sensitivity index of the material is 0.3. (becomes twice)
