Problem: What is the molar concentration of the hydroiodic acid in an available solution?
Experimental design: The hydroiodic acid in the available solution is titrated with a
standard solution of potassium hydroxide. The colour change of bromothymol blue indicator
to green indicates the equivalence point.
3 24. The following titration procedure is provided for the described experiment. Three errors
occur in the procedure. Identify each error and provide the corrected procedural steps.
1. Obtain 70 to 80 mL of potassium hydroxide solution in a clean beaker.
2. Obtain 70 to 80 mL of hydroiodic acid solution in a clean beaker.
3. Set up the burette to contain the hydroiodic acid solution.
4. Record the initial burette reading.
5. Pipette a 10.00 mL sample of hydroiodic acid into a volumetric flask. Add 2-3 drops of
bromothymol blue indicator.
6. While swirling the flask, slowly add the titrant to the sample solution until a colour
change has occurred.
7. Record the final burette reading.
8. Dispose contents of the flask safely and clean the flask.
9. Repeat steps 4 to 7 until you obtain three trials within 0.5 to 1.0 mL of each other.
