Objectives : at the end of this lesson students of grade 06 will be able to,
[Link] energy as ability to do work
[Link] a simple experiment/activity to demonstrate how energy work.
Lesson Development :
Step 01 :
Ask students to write down the different games and activities taking place in the figure
4.1
Explain how energy is needed to do all these activities.
Step 02 :
Draw a diagram on board to show how a wind propeller works.
Explain how the blowing wind energy turns the plates of propeller to rotate fast.
Allow students to copy down the diagram on boards.
Step 03 :
Recall the lesson as a summery
Assign the homework to be done
Teaching aids : White board, text book
Student note
Week 01
04. Energy in day to day life
Assignement 04.1
Sinhala Hindu New year festival games Procession
Tug of war Kawadi Dance
Pillow fight Fireball wheel
Scraping coconut context Kandian drummer
Greasy pole climb
Blindfold pot hitting
Energy is needed to do all these activities.
The ability to do work is known as energy
Different energies are produced by different energy sources
Eg :
Uses of energy Sources
Dry cloths Sun
Run vehicles Petrol / Diesel
Cooking Firewood / lpgas / electricity
Activity 04.1
Lets Make a wind propeller
A wind propeller rotates faster when there is wind
How does the wind propeller got the energy ? ……………………
Homework - Assignment 4.2
Prepare a list of instances of where solar energy is used.

3. Sustainable usage of energy
Objectives : at the end of this lesson students of grade 06 will be able to,
01. Identify sun as the main source of energy
02. Give a brief introduction to other sources of energy
Lesson Development :
Step 01 :
4. Discuss the answers for assignment 4.2 and the activity 4.2 and draw on board to show
how a solar thermal box stove work.
5. Give a brief introduction about different energy sources
Step 02 :
Ask students to form a mind map on energy sources
Assign assignment 4.4 as a howmework
Teaching aids : whiteboard, text book
Student note
Week 02
Activity 4.2 - Demonstrate the functions of a solar thermal box stove
Figure 4.5 solar thermal stove /cooker
This can be used to cook food and boil water.
Solar energy is used here
o Thermometer – it is used to measure temperature in centigrade or Fahrenheit .
Homework : Assignment 4.4
Teachers note : Week 03
Name of teacher : [Link] Sewwandi
Unit/ chapter : 04
Topic – Energy in day today life
No of periods : 10
Content :
1. Sun is the main source of energy
2. Introduction to other sources of energy
3. Sustainable usage of energy
Objectives : at the end of this lesson students of grade 06 will be able to,
[Link] simple activities to demonstrate how energy works
[Link] several applications of selected energy sources by simple activities.
Lesson Development :
Step 01.
Discuss the answers for previous day homework (Assignment 4.4 )
Discuss how a hydropower station works by using the activity 4.5
Step 02.
Discuss how potential energy stores in water turns the turbine with kinetic energy to
produce electricity by using the diagram.
Teaching aids – Diagram of a hydropower station , Whiteboard, Textbook
Student note
Hydropower station
Figure 4.17 – Structure of hydropower station
Energy stores in running water is used to generate electricity
o Potential energy of water -------- > Electriacal energy
Activity 4.5 – Let’s make a model of a turbine
Things you need :
A small plastic bottle , cork stopper , Spoke wires, few yogurt spoons , cardboard circle
Question
1. Give as a example for using energy sources
Activity 4.5 : Make a model of a turbine
Requirements :
A small plastic bottle
Coke stopper
Spoke wire
Few yogurt spoons
Cardboard circle
Binder gum
Paste carboard circle at the bottom of the plastic bottle and make a small hole at the center of
the bottom which is similar to the size of spoke wire.
Make the same hole at the center of the coke stoper.
