T he global crisis of plastic pollution
Plastic pollution is a significant global environmental problem. Millions of tons of
plastic waste are produced annually, many end up in landfills, oceans, and other
ecosystems. Today, we produce about 400 million tonnes of plastic waste every year.
We have produced lots as much plastics since the early 2000s (UN environment
programme).
As the plastics end up in our ecosystem, it causes lots of environmental problems
such as, marine pollution: research indicates that 1,500 species in marine and terrestrial
environments are known to ingest plastic. This causes health risks to marine life.
Land pollution: Chlorinated plastic can release harmful chemicals into the
surrounding soil. This can then seep into groundwater or other surrounding water
sources, and also the ecosystem. This can cause a range of potentially harmful effects
on the species that drink the water.
And health risks: exposure to plastic has been found to increase the risk of birth
complications, lung growth and childhood cancer (Earth Day). Students found a micro
plastic in the lung of a patient. This shows, even small plastics can harm our health.
To sum up, a simple plastic can cause destruction in our world. All living species are
affected by this toxic waste. Let's all be responsible, be eco-friendly.
Let's not use plastics because it doesn't only harm us but also other species. Our
Earth is slowly falling down and plastic is one of the reasons for it. Plastics were
beneficial to us once but, can we risk our Earth just because of its simple benefits?

utensils in fast food chains like paper cups and plates which are biodegradable can
really reduce the plastics that we produce every year. More than that, recycling plastics
can also help in reducing the plastics in our world, making it safe for marine and land
species too.
All in all, baby steps can have a big impact reducing waste on this planet. Let's help
our Earth until it's too late. Reduce using plastic, love and save your planet.
