CHAPTER1
ACTION PLAN

Caring for the elderly involves fulfilling the needs that are special
and unique to those that are elderly in society. They require care
because they may not be able to do it all alone because of their age and
the old age problem.

Objectives of the study

• To identify the situations in which elderly care is required.

• To examine the present impact of social media on the lives
of the elderly.
• To explore the responsibilities of young children towards
their grandparents.
• To study the measures adopted by organizations,
communities, and the state for the care of the elderly.

Significance of the study

In Kerala, 16.5% of the state has the maximum proportion of
elderly people in its population compared to other Indian states, and the
figure is projected to reach 20.9% in 2031 (Kerala Economic
Review,2021). There are cases where it is observed that with rising age
and illness elderly in the family are even abandoned. Thus, the study of
the care of the elderly is very significant, at this juncture, an attempt is
made to study the status and problems related to the care of the elderly.
Activities to be undertaken-

➢ With the help of an Asha worker, an interview with elders in my

locality is planned to be conducted.
➢ An interview schedule has to be prepared to collect information
regarding their financial status, health status, and also their
relation with family, friends, and society.
CHAPTER 2

CARE REQUIREMENTS FOR ELDERLY

The Elderly is a very sensitive stage when one requires care and
the presence of loved ones makes them comfortable. They may be
helped with their health care and daily chores. One should hence care
for the elderly to ensure that their levels of worry and anxiety are
reduced by making sure we care for them and offer comfort. It is also
important to take care of our elders as they are more prone to abuse.
Being with them makes sure that they do not receive any form of abuse.
Old people are also more prone to diseases and it is hence important to
take care of the elderly to ensure that these illnesses do not make them
weaker and that they get the medical attention needed. We should also
show love and affection and take care of the elderly as a sign of
gratitude, it’s a way of thanking them for raising us and taking care of
us. Taking care of the elderly gives you a sense of moral responsibility.
This is what is expected from us and hence abandoning them means
that we are abandoning our responsibilities.

The survey found that more than 80 percent of respondents

were pensioners. The financially well-off older people do not wish to
be dependent on government facilities for health needs, as they prefer
private institutions for better services. The various secondary source of
information also supports this data, pension was the main source of
income for the majority of the elderly. Financially insecure old people
expect social security, free health care, and subsidies so that they can
lead a comfortable and respectable life in old age. It is noted that the
urban elderly is comparatively more financially independent than the
rural. Most urban elderly are pension receivers, whereas elders in rural
areas are not having a stable source of income and are financially
dependent.
Data was collected using an interview schedule among people
belonging to the age group 60-85 in Thiruvananthapuram and it was
found that 84% are having health issues and needed medical care.
Diabetics and hypertension are the most common diseases found
among the elderly. They need a companion to do their daily chores and
also to accompany them to the hospital. Mostly family members play
this role but there are chances when they may not find time and hence
depend on a third person.

Thus, it is observed that the absence of care from loved ones,

financial insecurity, geriatric syndromes, and related health issues are
the most important problems faced by the elderly. Elderly persons are
prone to depression due to loneliness, loss of friends, and loved ones,
changes in environment or living arrangements, or physical and mental
decline. Though not every elderly experiences depression, a family or
a caregiver who understands their feelings and the stages of life they
pass through can support them in every aspect.
CHAPTER 3

IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE LIFE OF

ELDERLY

Information and communication technology have changed over the

past few years. The development of mobile technology has played an
essential role in shaping the impact of social media. At present, it is
observed that social media has brought a significant change in the life
of the elderly.

Smartphones are transforming the lives of the elderly in Kerala,

enabling them to do things that people of their age couldn’t even dream
of barely a decade ago, smartphone -aided digital infrastructure gave
them a new lease of life. Psychologically speaking activities in
WhatsApp groups, Facebook, video chat and other various online
services keep the elderly engaged and enhance memory, social skills,
and creative spirits. Social media are highly beneficial for the elderly
in the following ways-

❖ Staying connected with family

❖ Cultivating friendship

❖ Entertainment value

❖ Inspire Civic Pride

CHAPTER 4

RESPONSIBILITIES OF YOUNG CHILDREN,

ORGANISATIONS, AND SOCIETY

Old members of society have more experiences in life and hence

have more wisdom that they can share with us. It is also important to
take care of the elderly as a way of acquiring wisdom from them. The
time spent with young people benefits the elderly by enhancing mood,
encouraging physical activity, improving the enjoyment of life,
reducing symptoms of dementia, and providing opportunities to learn
new things. From the perspective of children, this intergenerational
hangout time benefits them with a patient hear to talk to, an
appreciation, many new educational opportunities and it gives an
insight into getting older and what it really means.

Societies take initiative for starting homes or centers for the

elderly to give physical protection, medical aid, and economic security.
It is observed that sometimes these centers are not well equipped and
spacious with facilities for reading, crafts, and hobbies, a recreational
facility like radio, television, and indoor and outdoor games with
sufficient interested volunteers to serve the old people. These homes
should ensure and help the older individual to spend time usefully and
constructively in order to achieve happiness and avoid inconveniences
to family and community.

The state of Kerala has been actively involved in providing care

for the elderly, various innovative schemes implemented by the social
security mission include Vayomithram, Aswaskiranam, and Caregivers
for institutions providing health care and support to the elderly with
free medicines, palliative care, and counselling services. There are
some civil society organizations and NGOs that have started initiatives
in providing primary care to palliative care.

So, the role of individual, society, state, and others play a very
significant role in taking care of the elderly.

.
CHAPTER 5

SUGGESTIONS

We can help the elderly population in our community by being

good neighbors in terms of shopping and helping them clean their
compounds, also by forming community organizations for the elderly
one can help them with issues like getting any social service or
transportation needs. Visiting the elderly in the community every now
and then will ensure that they get a sense of companionship and will
never feel miserable and lonely.

To help the elderly person in our homes and in our communities is a

moral responsibility of each and every individual, we should never look
tt them as a burden instead should use that as a chance to return the love
and care they showered upon while raising us. If you are not available
to take care of them at home, you can employ a caregiver or take them
to care homes and ensure their safety and happiness. The relationship
between young and old always brings happiness so an effort for
creating a relationship between the elderly population and children will
benefit the entire community in a lot of ways.

It is important that one becomes familiar with the ways to provide the
elderly with the best care possible -

a. Visit often
b. Check their medications regularly
c. Hire help always
d. Make modifications in their home for their convenience
e. Talk openly about their finances
f. Take care of the important paperwork required
g. Watch for driving issues if any
h. Keep them always active
Society should make sure that the aged ones in the community receive
proper care and medication from their family themselves else there
should be organizations to provide this. Programs organized on various
occasions either by society or residence associations should have a
space for them.

Homes for the elderly should be spacious and well equipped with all
facilities so that they utilize their time effectively and always remains
happy.
CHAPTER 6

CONCLUSION

This chapter concludes the study of the care for the elderly with the
following observations.

Some of the major problems faced by the elderly include:

• Lack of acceptance by family members

• Feeling of loneliness
• Financial instability
• Change of lifestyle, forced shift away from native place
• Health problems
• Feeling of insecurity
• Lack of emotional support
• Isolation from larger society/community
• Targeting by robbers and anti-socials due to perceived state of
health
• Fear of attack from domestic aides/helpers for money

The relationship between young and old is sure to bring many happy
smiles, so an effort for creating a relationship between the elderly
population and the children will benefit the entire community in a lot
of ways.

Social media creates a sense of belonging to a greater community

among the elderly and they feel connected on a large scale. It can help
to entertain older adults and help inspire social movements and raise
awareness about issues.

Our state always takes initiative to be senior citizen-friendly and ensure

that aged people get protection, respect, and relief as their rights.
