❑ Inductive effect
displacement of sigma electrons towards more electronegative atom of sigma bond
▪ Electronic effect is only possible when another molecule comes near
to any molecule whereas ,inductive , resonance effect or mesomeric
effects electrons are always moving, delocalized.
-I inductive effect : The group which takes negative charge on itself and make the
carbon positively charged , withdraw electrons create negative inductive effect (-I)
+I inductive effect: The group which takes positive charge on itself and make the
carbon negatively charged or donate electrons create positive inductive effect +I
▪ Inductive effect travels and decreases with distance, remains up to 3 carbons and
ultimately is lost
✓ Charged species are more unstable , means they are more reactive or greater is the
unstability more is the reactivity
✓ -I increase the stability (as more electrons are withdrawn ), but not always, it may
decrease.
✓ If charge is distributed ,it will make compound more stable , if charge is static compound
will be unstable
Significance
✓Which is more stable
✓from stability of specie we can tell acidic order (acidity),
✓ a good acid is that one whose negative ion is more stable (can
form more stable conjugate base)
