Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will:
1. Understand how to handle remainders in division operations.
2. Become familiar with Tagalog math terms to apply concepts in bilingual problem-
solving.
3. Solve time-related word problems accurately.
1. Dealing with Remainders
When dividing whole numbers, sometimes the division is not exact, and a remainder is left.
● Formula: Dividend=(Divisor×Quotient)+Remainder
● Example:
20÷6=3 R 2 (The quotient is 3, and the remainder is 2.)
Ways to Interpret Remainders in Word Problems
1. Round Up: If a full unit is needed despite the remainder.
○ Example: If 22 students need 5 desks, each desk seats 4. You need 22÷4=5 R 2.
You’ll need 6 desks.
2. Drop the Remainder: When only complete units are meaningful.
○ Example: You can form complete groups of 5 students from 22 students. 22÷5=4
R 2. Only 4 full groups are formed.
3. Use the Remainder: The remainder itself provides information.
○ Example: If 22 chocolates are distributed equally among 6 kids, each gets 3
chocolates with 2 left over.
2. Tagalize It! (Math Vocabulary in Filipino)
It’s useful to know how math concepts are expressed in Tagalog. Below are common terms:
● Addition – Pagdaragdag
● Subtraction – Pagbabawas
● Multiplication – Pagmumultiplikasyon
● Division – Paghahati or Pagdidibisyon
● Quotient – Quosyente
● Remainder – Sobra
● Average – Pangkaraniwan

Example in Filipino:
● Problem: “Ang 20 ay hahatiin sa 6. Ilan ang magiging quosyente at sobra?”
Solution: 20÷6=3 R 2.
Sagot: Quosyente: 3, Sobra: 2.
3. Time Problems
In time problems, students often work with conversions between hours, minutes, and
seconds, or find time differences.
Common Time Conversions
● 1 hour = 60 minutes
● 1 minute = 60 seconds
● 24 hours = 1 day
Example 1: Elapsed Time Problem
● Problem: If a train departs at 2:45 PM and arrives at 5:20 PM, how long is the trip?
Solution:
5:20−2:45=2 hours and 35 minutes5:20 - 2:45 = 2 \, \text{hours and} \,
35 \, \text{minutes}5:20−2:45=2hours and35minutes.
Example 2: Time Addition Problem
● Problem: Add 2 hours and 45 minutes to 10:30 AM.
Solution:
10:30+2:45=1:15 PM.

20. If it takes 35 minutes to bake a cake and the oven is preheated at 6:20 PM, at what time
will the cake be ready?
