GETTING TO KNOW THE PLAYERS
Well, well, evening all, my name is Chief Inspector Richard Banger. I had
hoped for a peaceful night at the theatre, it’s always fun to see whodunit’s
on stage, the stories are entertaining, although somewhat sensational.
Unfortunately, it seems that my night off has been marred by a real-life
murder. Yes, a murder!

The police department received a frantic phone call from a member of your
stage crew saying that Director Cameron James’s lifeless body had been
found stuffed in a wardrobe! Yes, indeed, there I am enjoying a nice cold
scotch, after a night out, when I got a call from one of my men, so here I am,
back again at the theatre, so let’s get down to business, shall we? I’d quite
like to get back to my scotch.

My men are currently examining the scene, the murder took place backstage
so we can rule out the general public, but everyone in this room had access
to backstage and so my initial thoughts are quite simply; it was one of you!
Why don’t you introduce yourselves, I’d like to know who I’m dealing with.

MOTIVE
Well, we have examined the body and can ascertain that Director Cameron
James was indeed murdered. Due to the location of the attack, he must
have been killed during the interval, while the stage was empty of cast
and crew as everyone was supposed to be getting ready for the 2nd half.
One of you came back onto the stage after the curtain had closed. Multiple
sources have reported they heard raised voices as the audience were
leaving. Someone got into an argument with the director and in a rage,
they grabbed a heavy item and coshed him on the back of the head. Cause
of death: blunt force trauma. He fell forward, against the wardrobe, the
body was shoved in the wardrobe and the doors locked.
The actor who was playing the innkeeper’s daughter stated that when she
went to open the wardrobe during the scene, the key was missing, and
she had to adapt the scene. Later, after the show, when the stagehand
was coming to re-set the stage, ready for tomorrow night, they noticed the
wardrobe had been disturbed, and there was a red stain on the bottom.
When they went to move it and clean it, they noticed it was locked and
heavier than usual, after fetching the spare key, they opened it and the
body fell out.
On the body we have found some evidence that may give us a better idea
about what was going on.
Evidence 1: a blood-stained hanky with a mouse on it, these I understand
have been given to all cast and crew by the director as a thank you before
opening night.
Evidence 2: a blackmail letter addressed to the director signed “S”

“I know your secrets, you think you can get away with it because of your
family but there’s dirt on you too, dirt that could see you lose everything.
One word to the right people and you’d lose everything. Remember that. S”
I wish to learn, which of you, if any no longer have your hanky and if
anyone here knows anything about this blackmail letter. Why don’t you
discuss the evidence before you and see if you can come up with an
explanation or two? I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

METHOD

Thank you for your co-operation up to this point. We’ve certainly discovered
some interesting facts about your pasts, your relationships and your
connections to each other and the victim. I never realised the theatre was
such a dangerous and toxic place to be.

My men have now searched the area and have found the murder weapon!

Evidence 3: a candlestick!

This is one of two that were on the fireplace, now this is part of the set. We
examined both candlesticks, one of them is still dusty, it’s been undisturbed
for a few days. The other has clearly been cleaned and placed back in a
hurry.

Our murderer came on to the stage during the interval, they approached
the director and argued with him. As he turned his back to walk off, they
grabbed the candlestick and coshed him on the back of the head. He
fell forward against the wardrobe. In a hurry they wiped the blood off
the candlestick with the hanky and shoved both it and the body into the
wardrobe, locking the door and hurried away before anyone saw them.

OPPORTUNITY

piece of evidence may be the last piece of the puzzle.

Evidence 4: A note scribbled on the back of a flyer saying “This cannot

go on, you need to act now, meet me where it all began.” Was crumpled
up inside Cameron James’s pocket.

Can anyone shed some light on the meaning behind this rather cryptic
note?
