Answer the following questions:
1. Why did the soldiers and the sergeant come to Joe’s house?
-Because they wanted a blacksmith to fix the handcuffs for them.

2. What did the sergeant offer the members of the house?


-He offered to let them come watch the soldiers as they are hunting down the

convicts.

3. Describe the night of Christmas


-It was very cold and windy. It started to rain. The sky was growing dark quickly.

4. Describe the scene when the sergeant found the convicts.


-The two convicts were locked in a ditch in a fist fight. They were rolling around

in the mud, shouting, cursing and throwing punches at each other.

5. What did the convict confess to Joe?


-He said that he took bits of food, a pie and some whiskey from the blacksmith’s

house.

Comment on the following quotations:


1. “Excuse me, ladies and gentlemen. We are chasing the convicts and we need the
blacksmith.”
-The sergeant said that to Mr Joe, Mrs Joe and the others at Mr Joe’s house

when he wanted a blacksmith to fix the handcuffs for them.

2. “He tried to murder me!”

-The other convict said that to the sergeant in a ditch when the soldiers came and

tried to catch the two convicts and one of them protested that the first convict

wanted to kill him.

3. “Have you lost a pie?”

-The sergeant said that to Mr Joe in the moors when the convict admitted that

he stole some food, a pie and whiskey from the blacksmith’s house.
