III. BASIC RULES OF COLOUR THEORY

Colour Theory is a set of principles used to create
harmonious colour combinations. Colour relationships can
be visually represented with a colour wheel where the
colour spectrum is wrapped onto a circle. The process of
designing colour is too subjective, i.e. what evokes one
reaction in one person may evoke a different reaction in
another. This could be sometimes attributed to personal
preference, or to the cultural background. Colour theory is
a science in itself. Studying how colours affect different
people, either individually or collectively. The colour
wheel is a visual representation of the colour theory

in treating many diseases. However; it was too far in
thinking in the construction and design of colours, so that it
serves a private computer user. Today computer users are
increasing in number as well as the times of dealing with
them.

F. The Effect Of Colour On Health
Chromotherapy is very old, dating back to ancient
Egypt, Greece, China and India. While using sunlight as a
form of healing predates the assumed debut on
chromotherapy in recorded history. It is possible that it was
either frowned upon or lacking practical utilization in those
eras to use the individual aspects of the colour spectrum as
a means of healing, rather than using their combined role in
the form of sunlight [6][14].

A number of studies[12][14] have addressed the impact of

colour on human health and his recovery. Psychotherapists
have used colours to treat acute neurological diseases,
nervous breakdown, anxiety, insomnia and mental
disorders. The colour was also used by Psychotherapists in

For years, scientists have studied the effects of

colour on our moods, health, and the way of thinking.
When the energy of colour enters our bodies, it stimulates
the pituitary and pineal glands. This in turn affects the
production of certain hormones, which in turn affect a
variety of physiological processes. This explains why

The blue is used for writing due to its ability to renew the

Colour preference directly impacts user interface (UI) design by eliciting specific emotional responses and facilitating ease of use, which are crucial for a positive user experience . Consistent and appropriate use of colour can prevent confusion, meet user expectations, and enhance task performance by reducing cognitive load and potentially improving productivity .

To integrate chromotherapy into modern healthcare, facilities can employ environments that leverage specific colours known to influence health outcomes. For example, using blue light for areas promoting relaxation and care for sleep disorders, and red light for energizing spaces to combat fatigue or depression . Additionally, coloured lighting could be used in therapeutic rooms to enhance mood and physical healing environments, potentially in recovery areas where boosting mental and physical health is critical .

Integrating colour psychology and therapy in user interface design promotes user engagement and reduces cognitive loads by strategically using colours to influence mood and behavior, which aligns with the principles of user-centered design. It makes technology interactions more intuitive and soothing, which can mitigate negative physical effects like computer vision syndrome .

Scientific studies indicate that coloured light influences physiological processes by affecting hormone secretion and neural activities. For instance, red light stimulating the sympathetic nervous system can enhance energy and counteract fatigue-related conditions, while blue light might be useful in treatments requiring relaxation due to its calming effects on the parasympathetic system . These physiological impacts justify the inclusion of specific coloured light in medical treatments for diseases where mood enhancement or energy regulation is crucial.

Red light stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, which can heighten alertness and energy levels, while blue light stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting rest and calming the body . These properties make red light potentially useful in therapies aimed at increasing activity or combating fatigue, whereas blue light may be more beneficial for treatments requiring relaxation and stress reduction.

Studies suggest that women tend to have stronger preferences for certain colors than men , which may influence the effectiveness of colour therapy, as individual responsiveness to specific colours could vary by gender. When implementing colour therapy in health treatments, these differences could necessitate personalized approaches to maximize therapeutic benefits .

Computer Model Therapy (CMT) uses the principles of colour therapy to alleviate symptoms of computer vision syndrome and musculoskeletal pain, such as neck and shoulder discomfort. CMT incorporates specific colour combinations in user interfaces to reduce these symptoms. Evaluations showed that applying CMT significantly reduced pain and discomfort for users by at least 78% completely eliminating symptoms .

Arousal enhances memory retention because arousing events lead to hormonal changes in the brain, which strengthen memory encoding and storage . The study by Mcconnohie in 1999 demonstrated that using warm colours like red or yellow as background increased arousal and improved recall of characters among students compared to white or cool colours, suggesting colours can elevate arousal levels to boost memorization .

Evidence indicates that colour can influence physiological processes independently of psychological and cultural factors because certain colours directly affect neural activities and gland secretion . For example, red light has been shown to stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, while blue and white light stimulate the parasympathetic system, influencing hormonal responses and treatments for conditions like sleep disorders occur even when cultural associations or eyesight are not involved .

Colour therapy has been shown to improve 'Purpose In Life' (PIL) for patients with post-stroke disability and their caregivers by using specific colours that influence mood and mental states . The therapy reportedly aids in the emotional recovery and in enhancing a positive outlook, which in turn may contribute to improving the overall quality of life for these individuals.
