INTRODUCTION
A wheelbarrow is a basic and widely applied tool in all labor activities, most of
which have taken place in construction, agricultural activities, and landscaping.
Though its design is simple, its efficiency is highly dependent on the user's physical
strength and the roughness of the terrain upon which it traverses. Conventionally,
traditional wheelbarrows require a lot of effort to lift, push, pull, and carry heavy
loads, especially along rough or long distances. It will essentially cause a lot of pain
and discomfort to the user, and this translates to low productivity and the increased
risk of physical strain, especially when transporting heavy or huge materials.
Over the years, there has been growing interest in enhancing the functionality
of manual tools by linking up mechanical and hydraulic systems. The development of
motorized and hydraulic-enhanced maneuverable wheelbarrows would be able to
reduce heavy task exertions by considerable amounts. By having a hydraulic lifting
mechanism, the user can use much less force by lifting and transporting heavier
loads as well. Furthermore, the motorized system does not add to the physical strain
of propelling the wheelbarrow in cases where its usage is needed for a range of
applications. In addition to this, a steering wheel makes the overall maneuverability
2
much better and superior with better control while navigating difficult terrains
compared with hand-held handles.
This research aims to design and develop a motorized and
hydraulic-enhanced maneuverable wheelbarrow that will overcome the limitations of
conventional wheelbarrows. It combines hydraulic and motorized components to
optimize loads while moving them around with minimal physical effort for the human
user. This new design will solve the ergonomic problem of the conventional
wheelbarrow by ensuring comfort and safety from adverse effects when using it for
an extended period, possibly minimizing cases of injury. Application industries are
going to be construction, landscaping, and agriculture, where heavy lifting and
transport over distances are more common. This project aims to develop a
cost-effective, efficient, and practical tool for improving workflow, enhancing
productivity, and offering a safer alternative to traditional wheelbarrows. According to
Molpie et al. (2023), most users experience difficulties with the maneuverability of
their strollers, particularly wheelbarrows. Eventually, the motorized wheelbarrow may
totally change the way manual labor is approached by offering a modern,
technologically advanced alternative to an age-old problem.
Objectives of the Study
Generally, this study aims to develop an innovative motorized wheelbarrow
from locally sourced materials, incorporating features that improve efficiency and
simplify material transportation.
Specifically, it aims to:
1. design a motorized and hydraulic-enhanced maneuverable wheelbarrow;
2. develop a functional and efficient motorized wheelbarrow using locally
available materials;
3. test the performance of the motorized and hydraulic-enhanced maneuverable
wheelbarrow in terms of:
3
3.1 load capacity and stability;
3.2 battery performance using hydraulic;
3.3 lifespan of an electric battery in operation;
3.4 ease of operation under various terrains
4. evaluate the functionality of the motorized and hydraulic-enhanced
maneuverable wheelbarrow in terms of:
4.1 functionality;
4.1.1 ease of operation;
4.1.2 provision of comfort and convenience;
4.1.3 user-friendly;
4.2 durability;
4.2.1 quality of materials;
4.2.2 quality of design;

4.3.1 stability and load balance;
4.3.2 control mechanisms;
Significance of the Study
The development of a motorized and hydraulic-enhanced maneuverable
wheelbarrow holds significant potential to revolutionize manual labor in various
industries, including construction, agriculture, and landscaping. Additionally, the
design project benefits the following:
Small constructors. The prototype can improve their knowledge of the
engineering principles behind the motorized and hydraulic-enhanced maneuverable
wheelbarrow. They can learn about the design and mechanics of the machine, as
well as conduct experiments to optimize its efficiency and performance.
4
Professionals. The result of this study presents opportunities for
professionals to contribute to sustainable construction, agricultural activities,
landscaping and technological advancement in their respective fields, especially in
mechanical, architecture, and engineering works.
Future Researchers. This study can help future researchers explore and
develop related research regarding the development of a motorized and
hydraulic-enhanced maneuverable wheelbarrow. Businesses can benefit from higher
productivity rates while potentially lowering healthcare costs associated with
workplace injuries. Additionally, the enhanced durability and reliability of these
advanced wheelbarrows could lead to lower maintenance costs compared to
traditional models.
Scope and Limitations of the Study Time and Place of the Study
The study will be conducted from September 2024 to June 2025. Evaluation
of the Pedal-Operated Wheelbarrow will be performed at the Drafting Technology
Building located at Cavite State University – CCAT Campus, Rosario, Cavite.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the design and fabrication of motorized and
hydraulic-enhanced maneuverable wheelbarrows aimed at improving material
transportation by reducing the physical effort required in moving heavy loads. The
hydraulic lift system will be incorporated to assist in the movement of the
wheelbarrow, providing a more efficient way to transport materials such as soil,
gravel, and construction tools. The wheelbarrow is designed to carry a maximum
load of 150 kg, suitable for typical construction and agricultural tasks, and will be
tested for operation on flat, uneven, and moderately rough terrain. However, testing
will not include extreme conditions like steep inclines or highly rugged surfaces.
5
The study will focus on developing a functional prototype and evaluating its
performance in terms of load capacity, ease of use, and ergonomic benefits. The
research will not extend to the mass production of the wheelbarrow or the exploration
of advanced motorization technologies beyond the pedal system. The study will
primarily address mechanical functionality and ergonomic design, with a limited focus
on aesthetic features or additional technological components. Furthermore, long-term
durability and real-world performance beyond the testing phase will not be fully
explored.
Conceptual Framework of the Study
The input, process, and output are illustrated in the diagram below, which
serves as the conceptual framework of the study.
Figure 1. Conceptual Framework of the Study
The INPUT study includes the flow of procedures and materials for
constructing the device. The Initial Cost is assumed based on the bill of materials
excluding the labor cost.
6
The PROCESS includes the design, prototyping, and testing phases. Initial
designs will be created using CAD software. The prototype will be assembled and
tested for load capacity, durability, and ease of use. Adjustments will be made based
on testing results to refine the design.
The OUTPUT will be the final, functional motorized wheelbarrow with
hydraulic lift with steering, evaluated for safety, performance, and durability according
to the study's objectives.
The FEEDBACK from user testing will provide insights into comfort and
usability, which will be used to make necessary modifications to improve the
product's design and functionality.
