A research study was conducted to examine the differences between older
and younger adults on perceived life satisfaction. A pilot study was
conducted to examine this hypothesis. Ten older adults (over the age of 70)
and ten younger adults (between 20 and 30) were give a life satisfaction test
(known to have high reliability and validity). Scores on the measure range
from 0 to 60 with high scores indicative of high life satisfaction; low scores
indicative of low life satisfaction. The data are presented below. Compute the
appropriate t-test.

A researcher hypothesizes that electrical stimulation of the lateral habenula
will result in a decrease in food intake (in this case, chocolate chips) in rats.
Rats undergo stereotaxic surgery and an electrode is implanted in the right
lateral habenula. Following a ten day recovery period, rats (kept at 80
percent body weight) are tested for the number of chocolate chips consumed
during a 10 minute period of time both with and without electrical
stimulation. The testing conditions are counter balanced. Compute the
appropriate t-test for the data provided below.

Imagine we have collected a random sample of 31 energy bars from a number of
different stores to represent the population of energy bars available to the
general consumer. The labels on the bars claim that each bar contains 20 grams
of protein.

Matched one-sample t-test. The water diet requires you to drink 2 cups of water every half
hour from when you get up until you go to bed but eat anything you want. Four adult
volunteers agreed to test this diet. They are weighed prior to beginning the diet and 6 weeks
after. Their weights in pounds are

Conduct a one-sample t-test using the difference with the following hypotheses:
H0: Diff = 0 Ha: Diff ≠ 0
Report the test statistic with the P-value, then summarize your conclusion.

Two-sample t procedure. Two different alloys are being considered for making lead-free solder
used in the wave soldering process for printed circuit boards. A crucial characteristic of solder is
its melting point, which is known to follow a Normal distribution. A study was conducted using
a random sample of 21 pieces of solder made from each of the two alloys. In each sample, the
temperature at which each of the 21 pieces melted was determined. The mean and standard
deviation of the sample for Alloy 1 were x1 = 218.9oC and s1 = 2.7oC; for Alloy 2 the results
were x2 = 215.5oC and s2 = 3.6oC. If we were to test H0: μ1 = μ2 against Ha: μ1 ≠ μ2 , what
would be the value of the test statistic??

A research study was conducted to examine the clinical efficacy of a new
antidepressant. Depressed patients were randomly assigned to one of three
groups: a placebo group, a group that received a low dose of the drug, and a
group that received a moderate dose of the drug. After four weeks of
treatment, the patients completed the Beck Depression Inventory. The
higher the score, the more depressed the patient. The data are presented
below. Compute the appropriate test.

Neuroscience researchers examined the impact of environment on rat
development. Rats were randomly assigned to be raised in one of the four
following test conditions: Impoverished (wire mesh cage - housed alone),
standard (cage with other rats), enriched (cage with other rats and toys),
super enriched (cage with rats and toys changes on a periodic basis). After
two months, the rats were tested on a variety of learning measures
(including the number of trials to learn a maze to a three perfect trial
criteria), and several neurological measure (overall cortical weight, degree of
dendritic branching, etc.). The data for the maze task is below. Compute the
appropriate test for the data provided below.
