names and terms in a different language.
 Line and paragraph spacing 1.5
 Bold print may be used for headings.
 Text in tables should not be less than 8-point.
 Preliminary pages, except the title page, preceding Chapter 1 must be numbered in lowercase

 Body of project is paginated with Arabic numbers, starting with number 1 on the first page of
Chapter 1.
 Every page must be numbered consecutively.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT’S GUIDE TO PROJECT PREPATATION

 The body of a thesis normally consists of sections which are organized as chapters.
 A chapter may be divided into major sections and subsections.
 Main or primary headings within chapters are to be centered while sub-headings are left
justified.
 Tertiary headings are not listed in the Table of Contents.
 The main sections and subsections of a chapter may be identified by numbers where the
former are regarded as being the first level. For example, Sections 2.1 and 2.2 would denote
two consecutive main sections in Chapter 2, and Sections 3.1 and 3.2 would denote two
consecutive main sections in Chapter 3.
 A subsection would be found in a major section of a chapter, and is regarded as the second
level. It should be numbered 2.1.1., 2.1.2., etc. The numbering style should be consistent
throughout the thesis and should be limited to 4 levels.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT’S GUIDE TO PROJECT PREPATATION

Title Page
Titles have to be well studied, and to give, so far as its limits permit, definite and concise
indication of what is to come. The title of your project should state your topic exactly in the
smallest possible number of words. Put your name, the name of your college and department,
hosting company, the name of your advisors, and date of delivery under the title.

Abstract
The abstract is a single paragraph not longer than one page, which give to the reader a brief
summary of the project. It needs to show a reasonably informed reader why a particular topic is
important to address and how you will do it. To that end, it needs to show how your work fits
into what is already known about the topic and what new contribution your project will answer,
establish why it is a significant question, show how you are going to answer the question. Do not
put information in the abstract that is not in the main text of your project. Do not put references,
figures, or tables in the abstract.

Background of the study/Introduction

The introduction is the part of the proposal that provides readers with the background
information for project. The following things should be addressed in the introduction:

- Sufficient background information to allow the reader to understand the context and
significance of the question you are trying to address,
- Proper acknowledgement of the previous work on which you are building,
- Sufficient references,
- It should be focused on the project/research question(s)

Problem of the study

Here under this topic you have to address the reason why you are going to do your project, i.e.
the problems that can be solved by the project should be addressed clearly.

Objective of the study

The specific and general objective of the study must be specified in clear and proper way in the
project paper. The general objective is the main aim of the project, for example if your project
title is Design and development of coffee pulpure, “the general objective of the project is in order
to design and develop coffee pulpure so as to improve………….” Whereas the specific objective
of the project addresses the tasks that can be done in order to achieve your general objective.

Methodology of the study

Here under this line the methods that are used to accomplish your specific objectives must be
stated.

Literature Review
A literature review is a description of the literature relevant to a particular field or topic. It must
be organized around and directly related to the research question you are developing.

Design Development/Approaches for problem solving

Here under this topic you have to devise different mechanisms or approaches to overcome the
problem of the project.

Result and discussion

Here under this topic you have to discuss the design parameter of your project and giving
physical meaning and interpretation of your mathematical description.

Conclusion and Recommendations

The project should also include proper conclusions based on the findings of the project. In
addition, at the last the student should give their recommendations.

References
You must give the references to all the information that you obtain from books, papers in the
journals, and other sources. The information you give in the reference list must be enough for
readers to find the books and papers in the library or a database.

For a book give a reference like this:

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT’S GUIDE TO PROJECT PREPATATION

- The author
- The year of publication
- The title and the edition number.
- The name of the publisher
- The page number for your reference
For example: Cengel, Yunus A. and Boles, Michael A., Thermodynamics, an Engineering
approach, 5th ed., 2005

For an internet reference give in this like:

- The author of the web page
- The title of the item in the web page
- The date at which the item was posted on the web page

Common questions

Powered by AI

The background section of a study serves to set the stage for understanding the research context by providing sufficient background information. It must acknowledge previous work, be focused on the research questions, and include relevant references to establish the study's significance and relevance. This allows readers to grasp the importance of the research problem being addressed .

An undergraduate project report should include the following components in this order: Title page, Acknowledgements, Abstract, Table of Content, List of Tables and List of Figures, Text of the project, References, and Appendices. The formatting guidelines are as follows: the paper size should be A4 with one inch margins on all sides; Times New Roman 12-point font for the text, with bold allowed for headings; line and paragraph spacing should be 1.5; and all pages must be numbered sequentially with preliminary pages using Roman numerals and the main text using Arabic numbers .

Numbering conventions are significant in organizing project sections as they provide a systematic way to categorize and reference different parts of the document. Main sections are numbered according to their chapter and subsection level, such as 2.1 and 2.1.1. This method aids readability by allowing readers to easily navigate to specific sections, enhances consistency by following a uniform structure throughout the document, and facilitates referencing within the text .

A properly formulated problem statement is crucial as it defines the scope and focus of the project, guiding the research process. It should clearly articulate the specific issues the project aims to address, explaining why these issues justify investigation. A well-articulated problem statement ensures that the research remains focused and relevant, providing a solid foundation for the objectives and methodology that follow .

For clarity and comprehensiveness in the referencing section, all cited sources must be listed with sufficient details for readers to locate them. For books, include the authors, publication year, title, edition, publisher, and pertinent page numbers. For online sources, provide the author's name, title of the web item, and the posting date on the webpage. This thoroughness ensures transparency and allows verification of the information cited in the document .

An effective literature review should be structured around the research question, ensuring that it maintains a clear focus on the topic. Strategies include organizing the review into thematic sections that directly relate to different aspects of the research question, critically assessing the methodologies and findings of cited studies, and identifying gaps or controversies in the literature that justify the current study's objectives. This approach helps in creating a coherent narrative that supports the research question .

The objectives of a study and its methodology should be closely aligned; the objectives define what the study aims to achieve, while the methodology outlines the process to accomplish these goals. To ensure research effectiveness, the methodology must be tailored to systematically address each objective, employing appropriate techniques and tools. This alignment ensures that the research is logically structured and the results obtained are valid and relevant to the stated objectives .

A project abstract should be a single paragraph not exceeding one page. It must succinctly summarize the project's importance, align with existing knowledge, state what new contribution it makes, and outline how the project will address its questions. The abstract should not include figures, tables, or references and must only summarize information present in the main text of the project .

Specific formatting styles for headings and tables ensure a clear hierarchy and structured layout in an academic project report. Headings marked by bold print and specific font sizes help differentiate between major sections, subsections, and tertiary headings, enhancing readability. Tables with minimum 8-point text size maintain clarity without overwhelming the reader. This standardized presentation improves overall document aesthetics and facilitates easier navigation through complex information .

To draft an effective conclusion and recommendations section, a project report should succinctly summarize the main findings, relate them back to the research objectives, and discuss their implications. The recommendations should be practical and actionable, based on the conclusions drawn from the study. This section should highlight the significance of the findings and suggest potential directions for future research or application .
