SPEAKING GUIDE:

PRACTICE WITH
YOUR LANGUAGE
PARTNER
APRENDE INGLÉS CON
MARÍA Y WILLIAM
TIME TO PRACTICE
YOUR SPEAKING!

A desbloquear a tu gringo interior,

María y William
ACTIVITY 1

Introducing yourself!
Step #1: Open HelloTalk. If you haven't created an account yet,
create an account.

Step #2: It's time to find your LANGUAGE PARTNER! Go to

"Connect", find several language partners, and send the
following message (Feel free to modify it as you like):

Hey (name of potential language partner)! I'm (your name), and

I'm from (name of your country). I would be happy to help you
with your Spanish, would you like to practice with me?

Step 3: Now, it's time to INTRODUCE YOURSELF!

We recommend you ask these next questions to your

language partner (and create a fun language learning
environment!).

First introduce yourself:

Empezaremos con las preguntas de presentación, para de esa

forma crear language partners.
ACTIVITY 1

1.- What's your name?

If you need to respond to this question you can start this way:
My name's ________

2.- If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?

If you need to respond to this question, you can start like this:
I'm 25 years old…

3.- Where are you from?

If you need to respond to this question, you can start like this:
I'm from… ( and your country) for example: I'm from Mexico,
Honduras, Colombia…

4.- What do you do for a living?

If you need to respond to this question, you can start like this:
I'm a/ an _______ for example: I'm a lawyer, I'm an engineer…

5.- What do you like to do for fun?

If you need to respond to this question, you can start like this:
Well, I'm really into…
For example: I'm really into singing, dancing, reading etc… you
can choose one option or change the activity.

Remember to do this for AT LEAST 20 minutes daily. YOU GOT

THIS!
ACTIVITY 2

Use these "gringo" questions

with your language partner!
Ask your partner the following 2 questions and then play a fun
game with him/her…

1.- What do you do? - ¿A qué te dedicas?

2.- What are you up to? - ¿Qué estás haciendo en este
momento?

Pay attention to their answer so you can learn more vocabulary.

After asking these two questions, it's game time!

This is going to be fun, you're going to play ''would you rather'' a
typical game here in the USA. We are going to leave some
examples, use them as much as you can with as many language
partners as you want.

But first, you should ask your language partner… Are you okay with
playing ''’would you rather'' to learn more vocabulary?
ACTIVITY 2

Use these "gringo" questions

with your language partner!
Would you rather... ¿Preferirías…
1.- Would you rather speak 5 languages at a basic level or just
Spanish and English but at an advanced level?

You can respond like this: I'd rather SPEAK (verb in infinitive)….

2.- Would you rather have superpowers or never gain weight?

3.- Would you rather go to South America or Europe?
4.- Would you rather have a Texan accent and live in California
or a Californian accent and live in Texas?

You can ask whatever question you want with the following
structure:

Would you rather + Verb in infinitive + rest of the sentence?

ACTIVITY 3

Talking about what you're INTO

Go to HelloTalk and tell your LANGUAGE PARTNER what you have
learned recently. Remember, you are an expert using ''INTO'' in
your conversations!

We will leave you a few questions below, but we want you to

continue practicing with other topics. So you can ask these
questions as well!

1.- Hey, what have you been INTO lately?

2.- Are you into ROCK music? (you can change the type of
music)
3.- You know what, I'm really into LEARNING languages, how
about you?
4.- Are you INTO horror movies?
5.-What kind of things are you into?

You can answer like this:

Yes, I am really into… ( what you are into).

Be as creative as you can, and have fun with your language

partner.

Keep going! You are doing amazing :)

ACTIVITY 4

Time to use your ACTIVE

LISTENING!
You've learned how to start your conversation, how to break the
ice, common questions you can ask... it's now time to take your
conversations to the NEXT LEVEL with ACTIVE LISTENING!

Step #1: Ask your language partner :

Hey so I was wondering, do you think learning Spanish is easy

or hard for you?

(You can also ask another question, this is just an example)

Step #2: Listen to your language partner, and then employ at

least one of the following techniques in your conversation:

1. Paraphrase (Put it into your own words)

What I'm hearing is...?
So, as you see it...?

2. Clarify (Ask for more details)

Can you tell me more about...?
I'm not sure I understand the part where you said...
ACTIVITY 4

Time to use your ACTIVE

LISTENING!

3. Reflecting (Ask about the emotions of the other person)

I get the sense that...
It seems like...

4. Summarizing: Talk about the most important points

So on the one hand... but on the other hand...
Let me summarize what I heard so far.

If you apply these techniques in your conversations with

"gringos" during the rest of this course, believe us when we say
that your English conversations will FLOW like never before!
ACTIVITY 5

Ending your conversation with

your language partner...
Step #1: Have a normal conversation with your language partner/s
for at least 20 minutes... USE EVERYTHING YOU'VE LEARNED
about starting a conversation, breaking the ice, and using ACTIVE
LISTENING!

Step #2: Once you need to leave, implement the 4 steps we

taught you:

1. Make it clear that you're leaving:

Well, I think I have to head out…
I gotta go… but…

2. Thank the person for their time:

It was so nice chatting with you today!
I had a great time chatting with you today!

3. Make future plans:

We should do a voice call sometime!
Are you busy... (date)? Maybe we could practice together!

4. Say goodbye (for real)

Bye!
See ya later!
Have a good one!
ACTIVITY 6

Using Informal Contractions

Go to HelloTalk and describe the following images to your
language partner. (Please send an AUDIO message!). Please use
at least 5 of the informal contractions below. You can also ask
your language partner to describe these images to see how a

remembered that Imma go next month! Hopefully someone can
gimme some directions.

you typically use?, and I'll share some slang from my country with
you too… (get ready to learn different slang that maybe you
haven't learned before).
Write them down and share them later with your friends.

2.- Ask your language partner… Do you know how to say ''swing
by'' in Spanish? Remember that '’swing by'' means '’pasar por
alguien o hacer una visita casual''... so now it's your turn to ask your
language partner for some examples… that way both are going to
learn slang.

3.- Ask your language partner… could you tell me a fun story in
English using the following "slang" expressions: get your act
together, bring it up and fair enough. You can offer to teach your
language partner three slang words in Spanish too!

STORY about yourself… you can write it down first and then say it
OUT LOUD (en voz alta)… it's important that you use the following
slang in your story:

Bring it up
You ́re shaping up
To be on your own
A bit
ACTIVITY 8

Using "SLANG" - Part 2

love with me. I want to still be friends with him, but I don't want
anything more. How should I go about this?

1. Ask your language partner:

What's something you would say that you're PRETTY GOOD

where you employ a few of them and I'll do the same in
Spanish. What do you think? We can both learn slang
together!"

now starting to grow on you?

(Answer this question as well).

For example: To be honest, I used to not like Japanese food, you

know raw fish wasn't my thing… but after meeting my cousin's

correct one and the wrong one. For example:

1.- What do you think ''Embarrassed'' in Spanish means?:

''EMBARAZADO'' OR ''AVERGONZADO''. Choose one option and I'll
tell you the correct answer with an explanation after.

2.- What do you think ''Actually'' in Spanish means?:

''DE HECHO'' OR ''ACTUALMENTE''. Choose one option and I'll tell
you the correct answer with an explanation after.

3.- Do the same with the rest of the following ''FALSOS

COGNADOS''

- Contest = Competencia, NO contestar. Contestar = Answer /

Respond
- Terrific = Fenomenal, NO terrorifico. Terrorifico = Terrifying
- Eventually = Finalmente, NO eventualmente. Eventualmente =
occasionally
- Library = Biblioteca, NO libreria. Libreria = book store
ACTIVITY 18

Using the famous "GET"

Output activity #18 GET

Go to HelloTalk and start a conversation with your LANGUAGE

PARTNER. We are going to give you some examples of how to
start a new conversation, and then you should implement the
following phrasal verbs using the verb ''get''.

1.- Hey, how's it going? I was wondering if you want to help me

practice my speaking with some phrasal verbs using the verb
''get''.

2.- Hey, how are you doing? I hope you are doing well, could
you help me understand the following phrasal verbs?

3.- I came across some new vocabulary that I'd love to

practice with you… wanna help me? I can help you with your
Spanish as well.

These 3 options are going to be really helpful to start talking to

someone on HelloTalk. REMEMBER to continue with the
conversation applying the following phrasal verbs… you can tell
your language partner what you did in the morning or simply tell a
funny story.

- I get sad / Me pongo triste
- I get hungry / Me da hambre
ACTIVITY 19

Text your language partner!

Go to HelloTalk and this time you will TEXT your language
partner with the following ''acronyms''. Just start talking and
when you have the opportunity to use them, do it! Use at least
5 of them.

For example if your language partner says something funny you

can add: LOL to your next message… ''LOL that was so funny!''

Another example: BTW I gotta go, but talk to you later!

- LOL - Laughing out loud / reírse a carcajadas

- LMAO - Laughing my ass off / Me cago de la risa (vulgar)
- BFF - Best friend forever / Mejor amigo para siempre
- BTW - By the way / Por cierto

ámbitos
profesionales también)

- TBH - To be honest / Para ser honesto
- DM - Direct message (Mensaje directo... muchas veces en
Instagram)
ACTIVITY 20

Don't say... NO DIGAS...

This activity is going to be a little bit challenging… but we know
that you can do it! This activity is to be María and William for a
day! Remember that your language partner is learning Spanish…
So how can we teach them (while you also practice your
English?).

Take a video of yourself teaching these following expressions to

your language partner IN ENGLISH. Also share with your language
partner the Spanish version:

How's it going?

I'm doing good / It's going good

How about you?

What's going on?

Do you want to grab something to eat?

What is your boyfriend like?

ACTIVITY 20

Don't say... NO DIGAS...

For example:

In English, ''How's it going'' has a similar meaning to "How are

you?". So if you want to say "How's it going" in Spanish, we
would say: "¿Cómo te va?". You could also say: "¿Cómo estás?"
or "¿Qué onda?", but I think "¿Cómo te va?" would be the best
translation.

If you feel too shy, you can just send this video to our Telegram
group!
ACTIVITY 21

Time to use "Street Slang"

Tell your language partner that you are learning "street slang", and
if you could have a very informal conversation with him/her to
practice.

Try to use 3 of these expressions during your conversation with

your language partner, good luck!

Salty - Triste, lastimado, enojado, enfadado
Bougie - elegante, de gustos caros

agresiva
Talk shit - Criticar a alguien, típicamente a sus espaldas
(VULGAR)
I gotta bail - Me tengo que ir
Are you pulling my chain? - ¿Me estás tomando el pelo?
Are you bullshitting me? - ¿Me estás tomando el pelo? /
Decir tontadas o estupideces (VULGAR)
Bussin - Riquísimo

If you don't feel comfortable using SWEAR WORDS (Vulgar words)

or your language partner doesn't like swearing, feel free to simply
avoid the "VULGAR" words mentioned below, the other words are
not vulgar whatsoever.
ACTIVITY 22

Talking about Romance

In this lesson... we will NOT ask you to flirt with your language
partner (hahaha). Rather, ask your language partner the following
question:

Today in my English course, we are learning about romantic

English. My question is: What is your favorite pick-up line? I can
teach you some in Spanish too hahaha!

A pick up line is a "piropo" in Spanish.

Ask them what they think about 3 of these phrases that you
learned from us:

Have you been working out?

Wow, you smell amazing! What kind of cologne do you use?
Hey, did you do something new with your hair?
I love your outfit!
Tell me more about you...
I'd love to get to know you better.
Do you wanna go out sometime?
I have feelings for you
ACTIVITY 23

The 5 Gringo Secrets

In this lesson, pay attention to the pronunciation techniques that
you learned with us... and ask yourself:

”How often does my language partner do this?"

As you listen to your language partner's audio messages, see if

you can notice other sounds that he/she makes when she
speaks! Try to imitate what you hear as well to improve your
pronunciation.

That being said, today you can talk about WHATEVER you like.
Remember, 20 minutes a day!
ACTIVITY 24

It's time to PUT THESE TOGETHER in your conversation! YOU

GOT THIS!
ACTIVITY 25

Review: Module 2
You now are able to have a COMPLETE conversation with a gringo
(CONGRATULATIONS!). However, we need to work on
INFORMAL CONTRACTIONS so our conversations FLOW.

When speaking to your language partner today, challenge yourself

to ONLY use the "informal contraction" and not the formal version.
For example, if you want to say: "I got to go", say instead: "I
GOTTA go."

Make sure to send audios or do a voice call today.

Here is a list of the informal contractions you've learned. You got

this!

- Wanna: Want + to
- Gonna: Going + to
- Hafta: Have + to
- Gotta: Got + to
- Gimme: Give + me
- Imma: I am going to
- Outta: Out + of
- Kinda: Kind + of
- Whacha: What are you / What have you

Step #1: Go to Activities 7-8, and review any vocabulary that you
think you forgot. Pick 5 EXPRESSIONS from these activities to
practice... expressions that you haven't used with your language
partner/s before.

Step #2: Ask your language partner for advice. You can ask
him/her: "What advice would you have for me to learn American
English"? You can end your sentence with: "How should I go
about this?"”

Low blow - un insulto muy fuerte, un golpe bajo

Pretty - Bastante
I'm vibing - Estoy vibrando
I'm chilling - Sólo descansando
Fair enough : Bastante justo ̈ - Cuando admites que lo que
alguien acaba de decir es razonable o justo.
Nice: Está bueno / chido / chévere / guay
Bring it up: Mencionarlo
A ton: un montón
A bit - Un ratito, un poquito

these "filler words"...

Um....
Like...
So...
Well...

Step #3: If you don't understand something your language

partner says, ALSO DON'T WORRY. You can use the "OLD
RELIABLE".

Sorry, I didn't catch that.

Could you repeat what you said please?

With these techniques, your conversations will FLOW and your

vocabulary will GROW. You got this!
ACTIVITY 28

Review: Module 7-9

Step #1: Review Activities #13-16. Use 5 slang words or
expressions from these activities in your conversations, perhaps
some expressions that you don't typically use!

Step #2: Instead of saying "but" today (which is totally correct),

put the word "THOUGH" at the end of your sentence. For example:

I went to a Bad Buddy concert. I didn't like it though.

Step #3: Have fun! You got this, continue practicing your SLANG,
EXPRESSIONS, and the word THOUGH!

Some slang words include:

It's up to you - Depende de ti

No way! - ¡No manches! ¡No me digas!
For sure, Totally, Definitely - ¡Claro que sí!
I feel you - Te entiendo

ACTIVITY 30

The FINAL ACTIVITY

In this final activity, review any of the concepts throughout the
course that you found to be confusing / vocabulary that you may
want to BRUSH UP ON (review).

Using EVERYTHING YOU'VE LEARNED in this course, we want to

challenge you to have a 10 minute conversation (VOICE CALL)
with a gringo. If you can't do a voice call, send several audios.

After this lesson, you know OFFICIALLY speak like an authentic

gringo in English! You should be extremely proud of yourself. Once
you finish this course, continue translating and singing songs,
watching Netflix, and practicing with native speakers. These
habits will allow to speak MORE AND MORE like an AUTHENTIC
GRINGO!

We are SO PROUD of YOU! Let us know in the VIP chats

(Telegram / WhatsApp) your experience in this course.

Congratulations on UNLOCKING YOUR INNER GRINGO!

Sincerely,

María and William
