Diary Writing
Diaries are an extremely important form of writing as they enable us to express our
personal thoughts and feelings. These thoughts and feelings are not normally
expressed anywhere else thus, in order to understand how and why we think or feel a
particular way about something or somebody, it is vital that we communicate. This form
of communication is called a diary.
How to Write a Diary
Diaries are usually written on a day-to-day basis and cover the day’s events. More
importantly, however, they detail how we think and feel about something or somebody.
Diaries are presented in the following way: Start underneath
the comma
Date Format
Dear Diary,
Format Today has been one of the worst days of my
life! I had to go to school on Saturday. I hate school at
the best of times but a Saturday! Why couldn’t I stay at
home and watch television?
Feelings
Anyway, when I got to school there was no-one there! I
Thoughts asked reception but they didn’t seem to know anything so
they just told me to wait a few minutes. Three hours later
I was beginning to become a little bored…. Events
Do NOT include direct speech in a diary. Write it as indirect (reported) speech.
